CNN —The United States formally recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez as the country’s president-elect following the disputed July 28 presidential election, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Tuesday on X. “The Venezuelan people spoke resoundingly on July 28 and made Edmundo Gonzalez the president-elect. “The Venezuelan people overwhelmingly and unequivocally expressed their desire for democratic change—the publicly available voting tally sheets say so,” they said. Gonzalez on Tuesday thanked the US for the move, saying: “We deeply appreciate the recognition of the sovereign will of all Venezuelans. President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday pushed his fellow Republicans in the Senate to stop Democrats from confirming any more of President Joe Biden's judicial nominees. The Senate has confirmed 216 of Biden's nominees to the federal judiciary. Biden has put forward 261 total judicial nominees, the White House said in a Nov. 8 press release announcing his 56th round of hopefuls. Incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told ABC News he would continue to bog down the nomination process. "I was on the Senate floor until almost midnight last night voting to confirm President Biden's judicial nominees," Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., wrote on X.

But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most liberal areas is particularly notable. Solid majorities of Black, Latina and college-educated White women described Trump in the exit poll as “too extreme,” as did over two-fifths of the White women without a college degree. But among the White women without a college degree who described Trump as “too extreme,” almost 1 in 5 voted for him anyway. Though many women are expressing unease about mass deportation, Trump’s claim that immigrants are driving crime may provide him considerable leeway to pursue his agenda, particularly among the blue-collar White women who proved most receptive to that argument.

Luzerne County is one of many counties in Pennsylvania — and across the country — that shifted to the right this year. Kevin Kraynak, a Luzerne County native, traveled from his home in California to try to get out the vote. Luzerne County became a hotbed of election denialism in 2020, and Pennsylvania is an open-carry state. Just over 152,000 total ballots were cast in Luzerne County — about the same as in 2020. In only one other Pennsylvania county were Trump’s gains greater.

After Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic performance with Latino voters, a coalition of Democratic-leaning Latino groups is grappling with the shift and trying to reconcile it with the policies they say many Hispanics support. Along with UnidosUS, Latino-focused advocacy groups such as Voto Latino, Somos Votantes, Hispanic Federation and La Brega y Fuerza Fund sponsored a poll of Latino voters. The coalition rejected national exit poll findings showing that Trump won the majority of Latino men — 55% — to Harris’ 43%. Edison Research, which conducts national exit polling for NBC News and other news organizations, surveyed 2,750 Latino voters nationally. Thirty-seven percent of male participants in exit polling identified as white, while 6% identified as Latino in the Latino groups’ poll.

Elon Musk says a leaderboard of "dumb" government spending will expose waste — and he wants your two cents. The Tesla CEO said this week that he planned to post a public "leaderboard for the most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars." While the effectiveness of Musk's leaderboard remains to be seen, experts told Business Insider it showed his marketing savvy — even if it could also encourage "gotcha" moments that need more context. Especially in a dry realm such as government spending, Musk's plans are bound to grab eyeballs — and perhaps make people feel more invested in the outcome. She said there was some precedent for Musk's leaderboard, noting that former Sen. William Proxmire, a Democrat from Wisconsin, issued the "Golden Fleece Award" for wasteful spending throughout the 1970s and '80s via monthly press releases.

A bipartisan bill to change Social Security benefit rules for pensioners passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, with 327 lawmakers voting to support the measure. The proposal — called the Social Security Fairness Act — would repeal rules that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive pension benefits from state or local governments. It would eliminate the windfall elimination provision, or WEP, that reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who worked in jobs where they did not pay Social Security payroll taxes and now receive pension or disability benefits from those employers. About 3% of all Social Security beneficiaries — about 2.1 million people — were affected by the WEP as of December 2023, according to the Congressional Research Service. As of December, about 1% of all Social Security beneficiaries — or 745,679 individuals — were affected by the GPO, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Canadian Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon has invoked federal powers to end work stoppages at the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Montreal, ordering binding and final arbitration between labor unions and ports ownership. Strike actions by unions and ports ownership lockouts had hit both coasts of the key U.S. northern trade partner. "The lockouts of the Canadian ports were causing ships to divert and contributing to congestion and delays throughout North America. Under section 107 of the Canada Labor Code, the Labor Minister can order binding arbitration to end labor disputes. Existing collective agreements will remain in place pending a new deal being reached between dockworker unions and the ports.
