CNN —A passenger plane carrying 61 people crashed outside São Paulo on Friday afternoon, killing everyone on board, according to a statement issued by airline Voepass. All of the passengers had Brazilian documents, airline officials said, though it’s not yet clear if any had dual citizenship. New York CNN —A toxic mix of surging rental rates and vanishing support for renters has catapulted evictions above pre-pandemic levels in some major cities. Evictions have increased most significantly in Sun Belt cities where housing affordability has worsened and where renters often have fewer protections. Other cities, including Minneapolis (+44%) and Columbus, Ohio (+37%), are also experiencing higher levels of evictions than before the pandemic. Three-quarters of the 34 cities tracked by the Eviction Lab had evictions increase between 2022 and 2023. The vast majority of evictions are for issues related to nonpayment of rent, according to the Eviction Lab.

CNN —Reigning champion Italy was knocked out of Euro 2024 in the last 16 after Switzerland produced a stunning upset to win 2-0 on Saturday at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Swiss supporters didn’t have to wait long after the break for a second goal – only 27 seconds to be exact. Italy’s continued sloppiness on the ball carried over into the second half, immediately giving the ball away from it’s own kickoff. While Switzerland deservedly advanced, it was an uncharacteristically out-of-sorts performance for Italy, who’s defense of its title ends in the first knockout game of the tournament. Italy’s defeat means that the reigning champion has been eliminated in the round of 16 at the last three Euros.

The track record of convicted leaders shows just how risky it is to try to predict what will happen. In 2017, South Korea impeached and later criminally convicted now-former President Park Geun-hye in a bizarre corruption scandal involving the influence of a friend and confidante. At the University of California, Los Angeles, student journalists reporting on violent clashes between protesters said they were assaulted and gassed. On some college campuses rocked by the demonstrations, access has been restricted to students only, effectively making student journalists the only reliable news media reporting on the campus protests and clashes. Student Editor Anna Dai-Liu told CNN that she was gassed, and other student reporters were assaulted, with one reporter being taken to emergency care. “Student journalists have a unique and essential role on their campuses in observing and disseminating news,” said Gary Green, executive director of the Student Press Law Center. Jelani Cobb, dean of the Columbia Journalism School, also applauded student journalists for their reporting on the campus protests.
