The central bank has been aiming to keep the long-run inflation rate at this level to maintain stable prices and a healthy economy. "There is now a higher base inflation rate than there was before COVID for a number of reasons." Related storiesBut there are other factors contributing to an increased long-term inflation rate, many of which Blitz tracked even before the pandemic. AdvertisementChanging demographics in the workplace are also driving increasing debt and higher long-term inflation, according to Blitz. In Blitz's perspective, all of these factors add up to an inflation rate exceeding 2% going forward.

Municipal bonds not only offer solid, tax-free income — they should also see some capital appreciation later this year, according to UBS. Consumers are still spending and the combination of job growth, higher wages and slowing inflation should continue to push households' real disposable income higher, he added. Further, the longer end of the muni bond yield curve is also starting to look attractive, he said. Investors hoping to take a diversified approach to municipal bonds may want to consider an exchange-traded fund. S & P 500 money is oblivious to stock valuations of any kind and ignorant to upgrades and downgrades. The Lilliputian sellers regularly fail to do damage when matched with the oblivious index money. A 4% 2-year note isn't competitive to the magnet of the S & P 500 and its kin. That's emblematic of what happens with a big buyback without stock-based compensation (something many tech firms use that renders moot the S & P 500 inflows). Because of the way that the S & P 500 money is divvied up, the share base becomes overwhelmingly index-fund based and the index fund shareholders do not sell.

First, higher interest rates will reward savers, making it more expensive to take risks. And with interest rates so low, companies could suddenly load up on debt: From 2007 to 2017, global nonfinancial corporate debt doubled, to $66 trillion. Now, with the arrival of a new supercycle, money managers are once again being forced to adapt to a changing set of economic realities. Normally, when the Fed hikes interest rates rapidly, the stock market tanks. Rising interest rates will make loans more expensive, forcing businesses to make more-thoughtful decisions about debt.

Dividend stocks could be poised to get their moment in the sun as interest rates fall – and investors only need to take a simple step to boost their long-term returns in these positions. "As rates fall, we might see people looking for longer-term alternatives and, in turn, dividend-paying stocks," he said. For starters, it's a form of dollar-cost averaging into a position, meaning you're buying the stock at regular intervals regardless of the price. "It allows them to reinvest this dividend on a regular scheduled timeframe and have a great opportunity for a larger total return over the long term." The ProShares S & P 500 Dividend Aristocrats (NOBL) has a total return of nearly 15% in 2024 and an expense ratio of 0.35%.

Jacob Wackerhausen | Istock | Getty ImagesWhat to know about the 10-year ruleBefore the Secure Act of 2019, heirs could "stretch" inherited IRA withdrawals over their lifetime, which helped reduce yearly taxes. But certain accounts inherited since 2020 are subject to the "10-year rule," meaning IRAs must be empty by the 10th year following the original account owner's death. The rule applies to heirs who are not a spouse, minor child, disabled, chronically ill or certain trusts. Since then, there's been confusion about whether the heirs subject to the 10-year rule needed to take yearly withdrawals, known as required minimum distributions, or RMDs. After years of waived penalties, the IRS in July confirmed certain heirs will need to begin yearly RMDs from inherited accounts starting in 2025.

The Federal Reserve is about a month into its rate-cutting cycle, and money market fund yields are already starting to pay less. That's where short and ultra-short duration bond funds and ETFs may come into play. An eye on duration Duration is a measure of a bond's price sensitivity when interest rates fluctuate. In that case, ultra-short bond funds and short-term bond funds might be "a natural landing spot for that cash." Those ultra-short bond funds have one to three years of duration and offer some stability day to day, Bartolini added.

CNN —When you quit your job, one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is what to do about the money in your retirement account if you’ve been saving in your company’s 401(k). Roll it over to another tax-deferred retirement account such as an IRA or the 401(k) at your new job. While a majority of 401(k) participants who switch jobs choose the first or second option, a large minority cash out, according to recent studies. Here’s why: The features of a 401(k) plan may differ from employer to employer. While many now auto enroll employees in the plan, the default savings rate coming out of your paycheck may differ.

Indexes hit fresh all-time highs ahead of the key inflation report for September due Thursday. The stakes of the next inflation reading have risen after the big September jobs number, and Wall Street could be in for some volatility in the event of an upside surprise, Bank of America said this week. Central bankers predicted inflation would fall to 2% by 2026, while risks to economic strength were "tilted to the downside." According to the CME FedWatch tool, the odds for another jumbo-sized rate cut in 2024 have fallen to zero.

But there's one hiccup: your retirement savings rate could fall behind and the opportunity costs could pile up. The reason is that the most common default savings rate was quite low, at only 3%. Those who saw a raise below 10% saw a drop in their savings rate and the dollar amount they saved. Those lucky enough to snag an increase above 10%, still ended up with a higher dollar amount saved even with a lower savings rate. For passive savers who are stuck in their ways, it may be up to employers to make the adjustments by increasing the default savings rate.

Over the 12-month period ending June, about 2 of 3 active bond managers trounced their average passive counterpart, according to a recent analysis from Morningstar . There were a few tailwinds in active managers' favor. With the Fed recently cutting rates by a half point — and Chair Jerome Powell noting that two more quarter-point cuts could be in the cards this year — a new challenge awaits these active bond funds. As interest rates fall, active managers can position accordingly, said Roger Hallam, global head of rates at Vanguard. "We expect active managers to make a little more, and they should be because they're doing more trades and it costs more to manage active portfolios," said Olmsted.
