Martin Kelly of the UK advisory firm EOS Risk Group, said the torpedo could derive from a US REMUS 600 drone lost in 2018. He told BI that the torpedo looked like models put on display at an Iranian navy exhibition in Tehran in December 2023.

People along the coast now have 10 to 30 minutes to reach high ground before a giant wave engulfs the Pacific Northwest. The scene above is a worst-case scenario of a megaquake striking the Pacific Northwest. "It's ominously quiet," Harold Tobin, Washington's state seismologist and the director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, told BI. The Pacific Northwest, by contrast, only found out about the danger posed by the Cascadia subduction zone in the 1980s. The Cascadia subduction zone pushed those mountains up about 10 million years ago, carving the mountain range that makes the Pacific Northwest so stunning.

She was also awarded three Strike Flight Air Medals for contributing to missions flown between last December and March. Because of poor weather conditions and difficult terrain, the search for their downed fighter jet took three days. Search and rescue teams ultimately found the remains of the aircraft in a “remote, steep, and heavily-wooded area” at about 6,000 feet east of Rainier, the Navy said. The two often flew together on an EA-18G, according to the Navy, a modified version of an F/A-18 fighter jet.

CNN —The THAAD defense system is one of the US military’s most powerful anti-missile weapons, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at ranges of 150 to 200 kilometers (93 to 124 miles) and with a near-perfect success rate in testing. THAAD interceptors are kinetic, meaning they take out incoming targets by colliding with them rather than exploding near the incoming warhead. Those other missile defense systems are more numerous than THAAD, an illustration of the importance the Biden administration is placing on this deployment to Israel. What makes THAAD so accurate is the radar system that supplies its targeting information, the Army Navy/Transportable Radar Surveillance radar, or AN/TPY-2. Production models of the THAAD system have never failed to intercept incoming targets in testing, according to the Missile Threat Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The US Navy has been burning through interceptors fighting in Middle East conflicts, including the valuable SM-3. AdvertisementUS Navy warships have twice been called upon to defend Israel from massive Iranian ballistic missile attacks and have used SM-3 interceptors to defeat the incoming threats. But it's not just the SM-3 that the Navy is using up battling foes in the Middle East. In a short-range engagement, China's missiles wouldn't need to travel as high, and they would likely have shorter flight times and travel at slower speeds. And the number of Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles, long-range cruise missiles designed by RTX, being produced has decreased annually as well.
