Views of the famed Taj Mahal in Agra, India, have been obscured by smog. New Delhi has a severe air quality level of 424, according to live rankings kept by Swiss group IQAir, the worst among global capitals. The city battles smog — a toxic mix of smoke and fog — every winter as cold air traps dust, emissions and smoke from illegal farm fires. Delhi flights faced delays, with tracking website Flightradar24 showing 88% of departures and 54% of arrivals were delayed as of Thursday afternoon due to smog. Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s eastern province of Punjab, was rated the world’s most polluted city on Friday, in IQAir’s rankings.

With some of these pressure points softening, food prices have cooled to rates comparable to before the pandemic. “Grocery prices have skyrocketed,” he said. “Until we can — if we can — fix climate change, there’s no way that food prices can come down,” he told CNN. In the past, grocery prices have come down primarily when “the economy is under duress” and people don’t have enough money to pay for groceries. Absent these kinds of scenarios, Trump is unlikely to get the actual food prices we pay back to where they were during his first term.

"We are seeing [deflation] to some extent," said Stephen Brown, deputy chief North America economist at Capital Economics. Energy prices and electronicsGasoline prices are also "way down," Zandi said. Consumers "could get more relief there because global oil prices are soft," Zandi said. Food prices are also generally underpinned by their own unique supply-and-demand dynamics, economists said. Lower energy prices can also take pressure off food prices, as it costs less to transport and distribute food to grocery store shelves.

Then, less than six hours after giving birth, O’Neil was wheeled through the labor and delivery unit to go home. Racial disparities persist, she added; for Black people, the preterm birth rate is 1.5 times higher than the rate among all other babies. Many of the regions with high preterm birth rates are maternity care deserts, Williams said. The US cities with high preterm birth rates also are “areas where there are many chronic conditions and patients living with a greater number of things like hypertension, diabetes, obesity – those are all drivers of preterm birth as well,” Williams said. “Every pregnant woman who lives in a maternal health care desert should be provided with access to a health care app that is monitored by remote providers.

CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs discussed what a change in tariffs and manufacturing might mean for the railroad line in a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, explaining why he thinks his company is well-positioned. "From our standpoint, actually, as long as it's coming to the U.S., we're going to move it somewhere," Hinrichs said. "If tariffs change the trade portfolio — as long as the economy's growing, we'll be a part of it." President-elect Donald Trump is expected to raise tariffs substantially when he takes office, which could change trade patterns, especially with China. Hinrichs also suggested that an increase in domestic manufacturing would be positive for CSX, something that could be bolstered by the Trump administration's tariff policies.

London CNN —King Charles III has marked his 76th birthday on Thursday by opening two food distribution hubs, as part of his Coronation Food Project that he launched a year ago in the hopes of bridging the gap between food poverty and food waste. Charles visited one of the new hubs in south London, which is hosting a “surplus food festival” where meals will be made using food that might otherwise have gone to waste. Since it was launched, the food project has worked with local charities FareShare and the Felix Project, and saved 940 tons of surplus food - the equivalent of 2.2 million meals. Charles speaks with staff at the new distribution center, designed to save and circulate surplus food and to support communities in need. King Charles treats his actual birthday in November like a normal working day, but the bonus of being the monarch means that he actually gets two.

After we published our research, the story of driving rats went viral in the media. The tale of rat tailsIt wasn’t just the effects of anticipation on rat behavior that caught our attention. While it’s vital to study negative emotions such as fear and stress, positive experiences also shape the brain in significant ways. As animals – human or otherwise – navigate the unpredictability of life, anticipating positive experiences helps drive a persistence to keep searching for life’s rewards. On Saturday night, Ukrainian air defenses detected a record 145 incoming Shahed drones. “We have been doing this for over two years,” he said, but the intensity of drone attacks had peaked over the past two to three months. The drone attacks seem calculated to instil fear rather than cause mass casualties, but several people have been killed in recent weeks. Private jet travel has surged in recent years, and two big changes explain why. Meanwhile, more affordable options for on-demand private jets multiplied. Two big factors led to that spike in private flights: The pandemic and a spate of more affordable options for flying private. But soon, private jet travel surged even as commercial flying remained depressed. Meanwhile, fractional ownership of private planes, fly-share services, subscriptions to private jet companies, and other on-demand private flying options have also grown much more popular and made private flying more accessible and affordable.

Weeks after sticky black balls washed up on the famed beaches of Sydney, Australia, scientists say they have partly solved the mystery behind the “disgusting” blobs. Initially thought to be tar balls, the golf-ball-size debris turned out to be something much different — a combination of decomposed cooking oils, hair and food waste, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) said Wednesday. Balls collected for testing in a laboratory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They said preliminary test results indicated that the blobs were tar balls formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water. Sydney Water confirmed there were no issues at the Bondi or Malabar water facilities, while Transport for NSW Maritime reviewed recent weather patterns but found no clear answers, according to the statement.
