As much as 43% to 49% of total containerized goods entering the U.S are processed through ports on the East Coast and Gulf Coast. Michael Kanko, CEO of ImportGenius, tells CNBC the economic importance of the ports impacted by an ILA strike is profound. Approximately 50,000 ILA union members work at the ports of Boston, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami, New Orleans, Mobile, and Houston. UBS forecast that 20% of Maersk's total volume would touch a U.S. port that would be impacted by the strike. East Coast ports in the U.S. are forecast to handle 2.3 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) in October.

Read previewMy husband and I had always talked about getting a camper van and taking it on epic road trips after we retired. We were at a car show and spotted a compact, camper van from the '90s that was well within our budget. Even so, the costs of upkeep went up as we added more mileage to the camper van. And, after doing some math, we realized we don't need a camper van to do the road trips we dreamed of. I recently bought a used car, and I ended up getting gap coverage and an extended warranty. Gap insurance is crucialGap insurance is a type of car insurance that covers the difference between what you owe on your car loan or lease and the car's actual cash value in the event that your vehicle is totaled or stolen. So, for me, paying $1,060 extra for gap coverage and also checking to make sure my auto insurance coverage is sufficient is well worth it. If you're looking for the best car insurance, look no further. MaxCare provides coverage for unexpected vehicle repairs after the manufacturer's warranty has expired, protecting you from high out-of-pocket repair costs.

Read previewCovering aircraft with tires, as Russia has done during the Ukraine war, can confuse weapons that are looking for the plane, a US military official said recently. Multiple Russian military aircraft, including fighter jets and bombers, were spotted last year with tires placed on top of them. While some observers suggested they might be meant to confuse image-matching weapons, others said they might be intended as shields. Russia has turned to several different deceptive practices during the war beyond placing tires on its aircraft. And Russia and Ukraine have both relied on decoy military equipment, such as inflatable tanks, wooden rocket launchers, and fake radar reflectors, among other weapons.

My mom is a little old-fashioned and has been upset with me for letting my boyfriend significantly influence my financial decisions. She has said multiple times that a man should have no say in my finances until he's put a ring on my finger. One, your mom has hard-won life experiences to offer, and you would be wise to hear her out. Only that we shouldn't reject our parents' advice out of hand simply because they're "old-fashioned" or we think they're "projecting". Instead, it's about nobody having a say over anyone else's finances until they have a genuine stake in them.

The crew of Alaska Airlines flight 369 “discontinued their takeoff” at Nashville International Airport around 9:15 a.m. CT when Southwest Airlines flight 2029 “was cleared to cross the end of the same runway,” according to the FAA. The Alaska Airlines flight carrying 176 passengers and six crew members braked so suddenly that the crew “reported blown tires during the braking,” the FAA said. “The Alaska aircraft, on its way to Seattle, had received clearance for takeoff from Air Traffic Control,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement. The incident in Nashville also comes just two days after two Delta Air Lines planes collided as both were taxiing for takeoff from Atlanta’s busy Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The Israeli military said Tuesday that an American woman who was killed during a protest in the occupied West Bank last week was "likely" hit "unintentionally" by Israeli fire. Eygi’s family said she was peacefully demonstrating when she was killed and that video showed the bullet appeared to come from an Israeli military shooter. They had separately called for an independent U.S.-ordered investigation and said an Israeli investigation would not be enough. A Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into the 2022 killing of another American in the West Bank, veteran Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, remains ongoing. Israel refused to cooperate with the FBI's investigation and to date no one in the Israeli military has been prosecuted.

CNN —US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has called for “fundamental changes” to the way Israeli forces operate in the occupied West Bank after the killing of American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi at a protest last week. “No one, no one should be shot and killed for attending a protest. “Now we have the second American citizen killed at the hands of Israeli security forces. And we’ll be making that clear to the senior-most members of the Israeli government.”Blinken added that the United States had “long seen” reports of Israeli forces ignoring extremist settler violence against Palestinians and reports of excessive force by Israeli forces against Palestinians. CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

The Olympic medals have come in a flurry for Ukraine in recent days: golds at the track and on the fencing piste, a silver in gymnastics, two other bronzes. “It’s a time to celebrate and think not about the war,” Mykhailo Kokhan, 23, a member of Ukraine’s national guard, said after winning a bronze in the men’s hammer throw on Sunday. The Paris Games have been a welcome respite for a country where at least one bakery sells pastries shaped like anti-tank obstacles and there is now deep uncertainty over the nation’s sporting future. Ukraine’s 140 Olympians have shown remarkable perseverance since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, preparing for the Paris Games either in other, safer nations, or at home to the grim soundtrack of air-raid alerts and missile attacks. Progressive groups have trained their criticisms on Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Kelly, who they accuse of being too conservative on key issues. The debate grew heated during a discussion about whether using the phrase “Genocide Josh” to describe Mr. Shapiro, who is an observant Jew, was antisemitic. One of his advisers called the Harris campaign to object to Mr. Shapiro, a development that was first reported by Politico. Manuel Bonder, a spokesman for Mr. Shapiro, declined to comment on the vice-presidential selection process. An act of political violence in a small Michigan town left an 80-year-old man in critical condition over the weekend, local officials said. The attack unfolded on Sunday evening in Hancock, a city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, when a man ripped out yard signs supporting former President Donald J. Trump. He then used an all-terrain vehicle to run over the 80-year-old who was trying to put the signs back up, the local authorities said.
