Vials with Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine labels are seen in this illustration picture taken March 19, 2021. Pfizer has rejected allegations made by rival Moderna that its Covid-19 vaccine is a copy, accusing the Boston biotech company of rewriting history to lay claim to technology developed by a field of scientists over many years. Pfizer asked a federal court in Massachusetts on Monday to dismiss Moderna's lawsuit seeking monetary damages for alleged patent violations related to the Boston company's Covid vaccine. "The Moderna inventions that Pfizer and BioNTech chose to copy were foundational for the success of their vaccine," the company claimed. Pfizer and BioNTech did not copy Moderna's technology," Pfizer said in its response.

Jacob King/Pool via REUTERS/File PhotoLONDON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Thousands of British nurses will go on strike on Dec. 15 and 20 for more pay, their union said on Friday, adding to a winter of industrial action and putting further pressure on the state-run health system. The strikes are the first of possibly several walkouts by National Health Service (NHS) nurses, which come after the government refused to meet demands for pay rises of 5% above inflation. He said the NHS had plans in place to minimise any disruption from the strikes and ensure continuity for emergency services. "Why on Earth is the Health Secretary refusing to negotiate with nurses?" "Patients already can’t get treated on time, strike action is the last thing they need, yet the Government is letting this happen."

Moderna's new Covid booster triggered a stronger immune response against omicron BA.5 and also appears to work against the emerging BQ.1.1 subvariant, according to the company. Moderna, in clinical trial data published Monday, found that the new booster triggered five times more antibodies against omicron BA.5 than the old vaccines in people with prior Covid infections. Moderna said it also found the new booster triggered robust immune response against omicron BQ.1.1, an emerging Covid subvariant in the U.S. Pfizer also released data earlier this month indicating that the boosters provide better protection against omicron BA.5 than the old shots. Two independent studies from Columbia and Harvard found that the boosters did not do a much better job against omicron BA.5.

Video: CDC says waiting longer between Covid vaccine doses could reduce myocarditis risk. Cooper joined an expert advisory panel formed by Moderna to monitor its Covid vaccine safety. The Pfizer study will include people who were previously hospitalized with vaccine-associated myocarditis, and it will also follow those who were more recently diagnosed.
Moderna on Thursday lowered its 2022 sales guidance for its Covid-19 vaccine after missing Wall Street expectations for the third quarter. The Boston biotech company said it now expects to book $18 billion to $19 billion in revenue from its Covid vaccine this year, down from its previous guidance of $21 billion. Moderna said some Covid vaccine deliveries have been pushed into 2023 due to supply constraints. Moderna's third quarter revenue came in at $3.36 billion, down 32% from the same period in 2021. It is also expecting phase three immune response data from its flu vaccine candidate in the first quarter of 2023.
Moderna this week started testingModerna and Merck will jointly develop and sell a cancer vaccine that is personalized for individual patients, the companies announced on Wednesday. Moderna's vaccine, based on its messenger RNA technology, is being studied in combination with Merck's Keytruda to treat patients with high-risk melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, in a phase 2 trial. Moderna's vaccine is designed to trigger the immune system to deploy killer T cells that target the specific mutations of a patient's tumors. The companies originally entered the agreement in 2016, but Merck is now exercising its option through a $250 million payment to Moderna. Moderna expects $21 billion in Covid vaccine sales this year as it rolls out new booster shots that target the omicron variant.

Americans have two options for a new omicron-specific Covid booster shot: Pfizer or Moderna. Pfizer's booster is cleared for anyone 12 and older, while Moderna's booster is for people 18 and older. "People ages 18 years and older may get a different product for a booster than they got for their primary series, as long as it is [Pfizer or Moderna,]" the CDC's website reads. "It's OK to mix and match Moderna and Pfizer," Dr. Ralph Gonzales, associate dean for clinical innovation at UC San Francisco, said at a campus town hall earlier this month. I definitely felt a stronger response with the Moderna — having had Pfizer before — but either combinations are fine."

REUTERS/Mike Segar/File PhotoSept 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Monday it has authorized an additional five batches of Moderna Inc's (MRNA.O) updated Covid booster shots made at a Catalent facility in Indiana, after it deemed them safe for use. Last week, the health regulator had allowed use of ten batches of Moderna's updated booster shots made at the Bloomington, Indiana facility, owned by a unit of Catalent Inc (CTLT.N), which is currently not a part of the company's emergency use authorization. The FDA had earlier said Moderna had requested authorization for additional batches in light of the current supply issues. The U.S. government, which has sent out over 25 million of the COVID-19 booster shots targeting BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of Omicron, has ordered more than 170 million updated shots for this fall, in preparation for a broad revaccination campaign.

Moderna has asked the Food and Drug Administration to authorize its omicron booster shots for children, the company announced on Friday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a document published Tuesday, said it expects children to become eligible for the omicron boosters by mid-October pending authorization by the FDA. Pfizer told the CDC advisory committee earlier this month that it expects to ask the FDA to authorize omicron boosters for children ages 5 to 11 in early October. U.S. health regulators cleared Moderna's omicron boosters for adults earlier this month. There is also concern that the original shots' effectiveness at preventing hospitalization and severe illness is starting to decline.

REUTERS/Hannah BeierSept 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects COVID-19 vaccine boosters targeting circulating variants of the virus to be available for children aged 5-11 years by mid-October. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterThe CDC said it expects Pfizer-BioNTech's (PFE.N), bivalent vaccine to be available for children aged 5-11 years, and Moderna's (MRNA.O) vaccine for those aged 6-17 years, pending FDA authorization. The Pfizer vaccine is already authorized as a booster dose for children over 12 years of age, while Moderna's bivalent vaccine is authorized for adults. The CDC expects pre-orders for the Pfizer shot to begin for the age group next week. The Moderna vaccine will have the same formulation for children and adults and will not require a separate pre-order period, the CDC said.

Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterIn August, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized Pfizer and Moderna's updated booster shots that target the dominant BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants, as the country prepares for a broad fall revaccination campaign. It said it expects to ship the 70 million doses by the end of the year, as promised in its contract. The U.S. has ordered more than 170 million updated vaccine booster shots for this fall when all individuals aged 12 and over who have already received the initial doses of the vaccine are being encouraged to receive a booster shot.
A COVID-19 vaccine mist has been approved for use as a booster dose in China. The vaccine maker CanSino repackaged its shot as a mist meant to be inhaled. Regulators in China approved a COVID-19 vaccine mist for use as a booster dose, making it the first alternative to injectable vaccines used during the pandemic. Similar to the COVID-19 vaccines used in the US, CanSino's formulation contains pieces of genetic material so the body can recognize the virus. Only time will tell if the mistable COVID vaccine provides enough booster protection to be approved and widely distributed in other countries.

to authorize a second booster shot of its vaccine — that is, a fourth dose — for people aged 65 and older. Two days later, Moderna followed suit, but with a broader request to authorize a second booster for all adults over 18. The agency said on Tuesday that adults aged 50 and older could opt for a second booster shot of the vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, to be given at least four months after the first booster of any authorized or approved Covid vaccine. A second booster would be the third shot for those who received one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and a booster shot of an mRNA vaccine. In fact, other data from Israel suggests that a second booster has only marginal benefits in healthy young people.
