Bolio — a 27-year-old stay-at-home mom and content creator from Fowler, California, near Fresno — began decorating for Christmas before October was even over. "A lot of the people who complain about it are those who love Halloween, so they don't want to see Christmas decorations," she said. "Retailers used to wait until Halloween had passed to put out the Christmas decor, now we're more likely to see Halloween and Christmas sections side-by-side," Canaves said. Yet this season he is on pace to produce marks in passer rating, air yards per attempt, yards per passing attempt, quarterback rating, passing yards and interceptions that are better than in either of his previous MVP campaigns, in 2019 and 2023. Goff has been a model of efficiency, completing 74.1% of his passes while posting career bests in yards per attempt and passer rating. While other NFC contenders have struggled, Detroit looks arguably better than a season ago. By rushing for a league-leading 946 yards on 6.5 yards per carry — an incredible 1.1 yards more per rush than he averaged in that historic 2020 season — he’s taken pressure off of Jackson. Immigration is the top topic in Republican ads, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris, taxation, President Joe Biden, and candidate character. Those rules were in the spotlight in 2020, after Joe Biden won a handful of key battleground states by a razor-thin margin. Ahead of Election Day, here's a refresher of the recount rules in the states expected to be the closest in the presidential race. A bipartisan group of lawmakers approved new measures in 2024 that would shorten the time needed for a potential recount. Then, after the state certified Biden's victory, the Trump campaign requested a machine recount, as was its right under state law. The state recently enacted changes to Michigan's recount law, but none will go into effect before Election Day.

Halloween is still days away, but online, “Gay Halloween” is in full-force. The posts all begin with text that reads, “I hate gay Halloween, what do you mean you’re dressed as” with a description of the costume. The “I hate Gay Halloween” phrase began to pick up traction in recent years as a joke about the obscurity of queer Halloween costumes, according to Know Your Meme. One of the earliest references to “gay Halloween” costumes is from 2022, when one X user posted, “Gay Halloween costumes are like ‘oh this? But those who are partaking in the “I hate gay Halloween” trend appear to embrace the “extremely online” of it all.

With Election Day around the corner, some households are finding that the best way to cope with political differences is humor. On TikTok, dozens of users are posting tongue-in-cheek videos about how their vote will “cancel out” someone else’s on the opposite end of the political spectrum — including their parents, friends and partners. About a quarter of those who plan to vote for Trump said their friendship would be strained if a friend planned to vote for Harris. Some who participated in the trend said it was a fun way to alleviate tension ahead of a stressful election. “It wasn’t a surprise to me that my husband was going to vote for Harris and Walz.

Democratic House and Senate candidates raised eye-popping sums from July through September, according to new reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. Democrats outraised Republicans in all 11 competitive Senate races and in all but one of the 26 “toss-up” House races. Three Senate Democratic candidates — Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, Maryland’s Angela Alsobrooks and Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin — raised more than four times as much as their Republican opponents during that period. Senate Democratic candidates spent a combined $244 million to Republicans’ $91.5 million. And House Democratic candidates in races rated as “toss-ups” or “leaning” toward one party spent $132 million to Republicans’ $61.6 million.

The Federal Trade Commission is announcing a finalized rule to make it easier for people to cancel subscriptions and memberships they just don’t want anymore. When the proposed rule was announced last year, Khan said, the agency got about 16,000 comments expressing how canceling subscriptions had become a headache at best. Khan and the FTC have already taken legal action against Amazon’s Prime division over accusations that it is luring customers into subscriptions that the FTC alleges are extraordinarily difficult to cancel. “Some members have the ability to cancel their membership online based on their membership type and location of their home club,” it said. TJX Companies, which owns Marshalls, HomeGoods and T.J. Maxx, has nearly doubled its annual sales over the past decade, reaching $54.2 billion in fiscal 2024. One way that T.J. Maxx accomplishes this is by making designer brands unsearchable on its website. It's not a T.J. product. It's that brand's product. But the surveys also reveal a noticeable gap in support between the pro-abortion rights amendments and the Democratic presidential and Senate candidates who are campaigning on a pro-abortion rights platform. Pro-abortion rights ballot measures won in every state where they appeared on the ballot, including conservative-leaning ones, in the 2022 and 2023 elections. Similarly in Arizona, a proposed amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution has clear majority support. In Montana, there’s little evidence that the presence of an abortion rights amendment has had a major effect on the race between three-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy. For example, in Missouri, public polling indicates broad support for a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights, while Republican Sen. Josh Hawley and Trump hold strong leads in their races.

While Republicans don’t need to win Nevada to flip the Senate, the state could help dictate the size of a GOP majority. Rosen told NBC News before addressing the Culinary Union that voters have a “clear choice” in the Senate race. “I think Sam Brown is just too extreme, and I want to continue being that pragmatic problem solver, that bipartisan senator who gets results for Nevada,” Rosen said. “It’s a massively missed opportunity,” said one Nevada Republican operative who requested anonymity to speak candidly about party strategy. Absurd and comical rescue images that appear to have been made with artificial intelligence have sprung up on social media this week as Hurricane Milton hit Florida, a reaction to the earlier proliferation of more realistic fake images related to Hurricane Helene. But as technology has advanced, fake images generated by AI have continued to proliferate on the internet, at times making it easier for false information to spread online. Public officials even cautioned Floridians this week to beware of AI-generated images that falsely depict conditions on the ground. The inspiration for the hurricane rescue images meme format apparently stems from a viral post from a public official on X, who shared a fake image of a child crying while holding a puppy with a flooded backdrop amid Hurricane Helene, which some recirculated as if it were real. In one meme image posted by an X user, former President Donald Trump appears to be dropping a basket of puppies over a body of water.

But, Banks said, “I just kept putting pressure on them.” With the help of an advocate, Banks asked authorities to issue an Ebony Alert, California’s new notification system to inform the public about missing Black youths. Two hours after issuing the Ebony Alert, officers pinged the teen’s phone, allowing them to geolocate the device. She said she has helped a dozen families, including Banks’, demand an Ebony Alert for their missing children. Similar to an Amber Alert, Ebony Alerts are permitted to be displayed on highway signs and billboards. Because officers determine whether to issue the alert, Lee said the cases of missing Black youth are often not met with the same level of urgency.

Milton's maximum sustained winds are 125 mph, which puts it at Category 3, according to the National Hurricane Center. The College Republican National Committee, which has been around since 1892, is an unofficial affiliate of the Republican National Committee. While there are more than 100 HBCUs in the country, none are home to an active, official College Republicans club. The central clash in the pivotal Senate race in Montana — and the fight for control of the Senate itself — was on full display Monday night as Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy faced off in a heated debate. Like other vulnerable Senate Democrats, Tester tried to make it personal — touting his bipartisan bona fides, highlighting his own connections to his red-leaning state and suggesting his opponent cannot be trusted. Montana is the party’s next top target, with Tester running for re-election in a state Trump won by 16 points in 2020. James Richmond, 50, an IT consultant and voter in Helena, pointed to those comments in explaining why he plans to support Sheehy, despite supporting Tester’s work for veterans. An AARP poll conducted in late August found Sheehy leading Tester by 6 points, 55% to 49%.

By comparison, from Ohio’s March primary through August, Democrats held the edge, dropping $78.5 million on ads to Republicans’ $59 million. “Bernie’s special interest allies are dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into this race to try and defeat Sherrod because they know Sherrod will always stand up to them to do what’s right for Ohio,” Brown spokesperson Matt Keyes said in a statement. Democrats, who hold a one-seat majority in the Senate, are growing increasingly nervous about Sen. Jon Tester’s re-election bid in Montana. Trump allies have pushed for a special legislative session intended for the Republican-controlled legislature to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all system instead of awarding electoral votes by congressional district. The developments appear to cap months of deliberations over whether Nebraska lawmakers could change the way the state apportions its electoral votes in a way that would benefit Trump. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, and the swing district around Omaha has twice gone to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote from an otherwise ruby-red state. But if lawmakers changed that to a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska's electoral votes. Maine is the only other state that does not have a winner-take-all system for electoral votes.
