Solid-state batteries have long been billed as the "holy grail" of sustainable driving. As the name suggests, solid-state batteries contain a solid electrolyte, made from materials such as ceramics. Automakers have invested billions of dollars in solid-state battery research and teamed up with developers to produce their own versions for mass production. Tomohiro Ohsumi | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesJapan's Toyota, for instance, has said it is aiming to bring solid-state batteries into mass production between 2027 and 2028. Yet, despite growing hype over the potential rollout of solid-state batteries, analysts remain skeptical about when they will actually make it to market.

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse says a 2035 gasoline ban will hit the European auto industry. Zipse's warnings come amid fears in the auto industry of a Darwinistic price war with China. AdvertisementA "correction" of the planned 2035 gasoline vehicle ban, Zipse said, would help reduce European OEMs' reliance on China for batteries. This, Tavares said, is because automakers will have to continue to invest in both electric and gasoline vehicles, thus incurring higher costs. American car brands Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler are struggling under their new owner. The European-American giant Stellantis is the world's fifth-largest automaker by volume, according to S&P Global Mobility. But Stellantis did better than that. 2023 was a banner year: record sales, record profits, record free cash flow. Out of all brands in the U.S., Stellantis vehicles have some of the highest inventories of vehicles on dealer lots, according to Cox Automotive.

Detroit Reuters —Chrysler parent Stellantis confirmed on Thursday that CEO Carlos Tavares would retire at the end of his contract in early 2026 and announced major senior management changes as it struggles to turn around its lagging North American operations. The world’s fourth-largest automaker by sales said it now planned to name his successor by the fourth quarter of 2025. The automaker also appointed Antonio Filosa as its North America chief operating officer in addition to his role as Jeep brand CEO, succeeding Carlos Zarlenga, whose future role has not been announced. Stellantis last week lowered its forecast from positive cash flow to negative cash flow of between 5 billion and 10 billion euros ($5.5 billion and $10.9 billion) this year. The broad management shakeup was meant to address these concerns, Tavares said in a statement Thursday.

Just three years later, Stellantis is struggling, and its troubles lie specifically with its North American business – home to Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler. Critics, including its own dealers, say the company raised prices too high and too fast, and didn't focus enough on making good cars. A supermajority of UAW members at Stellantis' Los Angeles Parts Distribution Center voted to request strike authorization from the International Executive Board if the company and union can't reconcile, the union said Friday morning. The lawsuit argues that if the union does strike, the court "should award Stellantis monetary damages" that result from a breach of contract. UAW President Shawn Fain has routinely said the union will strike if needed, however Stellantis has argued that would be unlawful under the contract. The lawsuit came the same day Fain and union members held their latest rally against Stellantis in suburban Detroit. Stellantis, in the lawsuit, called the grievances a sham designed to "justify mid-contract strikes against Stellantis that otherwise would violate the [contract's] no strike clause."

Stellantis sues UAW in US federal court over strike threats
  + stars: | 2024-10-04 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Chrysler parent Stellantis filed a federal lawsuit against the United Auto Workers, saying the union has violated its contract by threatening to strike over the company’s delays in planned investment. The automaker filed the suit on Thursday asking the US District Court in the Central District of California to declare the decision by UAW Local 230 in Los Angeles to take a strike authorization vote violates terms of the contract reached last fall. Stellantis seeks to hold the UAW and the local union chapter liable for any potential revenue loss and other damages resulting from lost production due to any strike. On Thursday, a supermajority of UAW members at Stellantis’ Los Angeles Parts distribution center voted to request strike authorization if the company and union can’t settle a grievance over planned company investments. “The UAW acted in bad faith by disregarding this language, filing sham grievances, and calling a strike authorization vote to pressure Stellantis to proceed with planned investments,” the company said in the lawsuit.

Carlos Tavares, chief executive officer of Stellantis NV, speaks during a news conference at the Fiat automobile manufacturing plant in Kragujevac, Serbia, on Monday, July 22, 2024. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares on Thursday left the door open for possible cuts to its dividend and share buybacks next year and brushed off problems with its U.S. business that led to a major profit warning this week as a "small operational error". "When you are in a context which is brutal and more demanding, if you make a small operational error, well it is immediately visible," he said, adding he was taking it as a "wake up call" and very seriously. While Stellantis is committed to its 2024 dividend, Tavares said it was too early to confirm next year's plan. "The time for 2025 has not come, we will see what will happen at the end of 2024 for a discussion and a decision for 2025," he said.
