Post-pandemic revenge spending is still continuing, but in one part of the world there's something starkly opposite happening — revenge saving. Rather than splurging on impulsive purchases, China's young are saving ferociously as the world's second-largest economy remains in the doldrums. Revenge saving has become a trend on Chinese social media websites, with Chinese youth setting extreme monthly saving targets. "Chinese youth have a revenge savings mentality," said China Market Research Group's Managing Director Shaun Rein. "Unlike youths in the 2010s who often spent more than they earned and borrowed money to buy fancy items like Gucci handbags and Apple iPhone, young Chinese have started saving more," he told CNBC.

Rival United Airlines — second to Delta in net profit margins — is circling. Delta plans to open Delta One lounges in Boston and Los Angeles later this year, and is studying airports where it could open others. Like other airlines, Delta accepted billions in federal aid to weather the pandemic. Luxury air travel and the United States didn't go together for many years — and might not still, if you ask well-heeled globetrotters. And at Delta and other airlines, many of the perks for luxury flyers come through lounges.

I'm also willing to pay a little more to select a cabin far away from elevators and loud entertainment venues. Room service offers a level of convenience that makes the delivery fee palatableAlthough some room service options remain complimentary, many now come with an extra fee. Millennials are losing their cool

Millennials may not be there yet on pants, or at least that's what I, as a millennial, tell myself. The internet is fueling the millennials vs. Gen Z discourse, but underlying it is something deeper: millennials raging against the dying of the light. "It's really beneficial for brands that at least the online discourse has millennials looking to Gen Z for trends. The nature of internet culture, much of which was created by millennials, puts a unique bent on the discourse and how creators and influencers address millennials. Chinese companies like social media giant TikTok and IT giant Lenovo are already globally competitive behemoths with compelling products. Admittedly, it's not a new move for Chinese companies to invest outside of China. Related storiesThis means Chinese companies will set up facilities overseas under their own brand or subsidiaries. In 2022, the German government blocked Chinese companies from taking stakes in two German chip companies, citing national security concerns and concerns over technology transfer. But even in today's complex geopolitical environment, Chinese companies are expected to continue venturing away from home, per EY.

The U.S. Department of Education is giving borrowers more time to meet a key student loan forgiveness deadline. "The Department is working swiftly to ensure borrowers get credit for every month they've rightfully earned toward forgiveness," U.S. Borrowers pursuing the popular Public Service Loan Forgiveness program can also receive additional credit from the payment count adjustment, as long as they certify their qualifying employment for those months. The payment count adjustment is an attempt to rectify longstanding issues for student loan borrowers. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also found borrowers were needlessly steered into expensive forbearances, during which interest accrues and credit toward forgiveness is paused.

Spending more to save more is an all-too common pitfall. But spending to save can lead to excessive buying habits and high-interest credit card debt if you aren't careful, according to consumer savings expert Andrea Woroch. ″'Spaving is us justifying our desire to buy more," said Brad Klontz, a Boulder, Colorado-based psychologist and certified financial planner. Yet, even as inflation and high interest rates squeeze budgets, consumers continue to fall for these financial traps. She had dabbled with investing in stocks in the past, but she said buying gold, especially in this fun way, inspired her to continue investing. “I’m still working hard to save more,” Ms. Lin said.
