Some of it had to do with the old joke being that Best Buy was nothing but an Amazon showroom. CEO Corie Barry is a no-nonsense heavyweight who mastered the supply chain for Best Buy during the pandemic. As the JPMorgan recent upgrade on Best Buy said, most investors don't realize how awful this period has been for Best Buy. It doesn't hurt, of course that Best Buy has a substantial dividend — 3.68%, down from 4% and 5% when we were buying it. We have watched Eaton and Dover go higher and that was without the rate cycle, just with the data center.

Even with recent rotation away from megacap tech stocks, there may still be a case for investing in thematic tech exchange-traded funds. Roundhill Investments runs the Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF (CHAT), which is up 13.8% year to date as of Friday's market close. But despite recent volatility in the group, the firm's CEO Dave Mazza thinks the investment thesis is still intact. Pointing to some of CHAT's under-the-radar artificial intelligence plays, Mazza waived off concerns that thematic ETFs may be too narrow in scope. "There are companies like Dell in the portfolio and others, ServiceNow and Salesforce , who are using AI and integrating AI," he said.

For example, this season started with the banks roaring higher on great numbers, legitimately great numbers led by a phenomenal Bank of America quarter. The later just made no sense because it is pulling away from Intel on the low end and if Nvidia really does have production problems then AMD is the de facto winner. In fact, the only stock that didn't suffer from an Nvidia relation, Apple, got through earnings without too much trouble. Some large-cap tech stocks are likely to fare better than others if investors continue to move into smaller companies. Artificial intelligence-adjacent mega-cap tech titans have been the driving force behind the current bull market rally, which began last October. Nvidia — with a market value above $2.9 trillion — has soared 136% this year alone, after climbing 239% in 2023. But a combination of disappointing tech earnings and impending interest rate cuts has weakened some of the bullish sentiment toward mega-caps. That will be the case in this jam-packed week , with the earnings from Microsoft on Tuesday, Meta Platforms on Wednesday, and Apple and Amazon on Thursday. If Alphabet said it cut back on data-center spending, then it would be alleged the company is falling behind Amazon and Microsoft in the AI race. The company also is now dogged by another competitor in search engines after ChatGPT creator OpenAI announced a prototype of SearchGPT . Apple reports on Thursday, and if you think the cloud-computing heavyweights are spending on too much AI, then you should be buying Apple. Citi has identified several undervalued global stocks exposed to artificial intelligence that present substantial investment opportunities. AI has driven approximately half the 11% return in the MSCI All Country World Index so far, according to Citi. The picture resembles the S & P 500 , where mega-cap stocks focused on AI have driven much of the rally. While many AI stocks have benefited from both expanding multiples and upward earnings revisions, Citi has identified a subset of 19 stocks that buck this trend. This dual tailwind of improving valuations and fundamentals has not been present in stocks with medium or low AI exposure — such as those in the table above.
