New York CNN —The leader of the Los Angeles Times’ editorial board said Wednesday she has resigned from her post in protest after the newspaper’s owner blocked a decision to endorse Kamala Harris in the presidential election. “I am resigning because I want to make it clear that I am not okay with us being silent,” Mariel Garza told the Columbia Journalism Review in an interview. Garza told CJR the editorial board had intended to endorse Harris, who previously served as a US Senator from California and the state’s attorney general. “I didn’t think we were going to change our readers’ minds—our readers, for the most part, are Harris supporters,” Garza told CJR. “This is a point in time where you speak your conscience no matter what,” Garza told CJR.

In New York City, a group of veteran journalists are trying to fill the gap. The group is tentatively called the New York Editorial Board, according to Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith, who helped assemble it in recent weeks. The self-styled board – “a group of journalists grilling politicians,” Smith said – is partly a reaction to The New York Times’ announcement in August that its editorial board will no longer endorse candidates in New York’s local elections. The timing is especially notable in the wake of last week’s indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, raising the possibility of a nonpartisan special election if he resigns. The proposal comes as pressure builds on Biden to exit the race following his stumbling debate on June 27 against former President Donald Trump. "Overnight, Biden is hailed as a modern-day George Washington, not an octogenarian clinging to power with a 37% approval rating," the proposal reads. The next phase of the plan is a "blitz primary," where prospective Democratic candidates submit their bids and delegates of the Democratic National Convention ultimately narrow down the list to six contenders.
