DARIEN, Ga. — The seven people killed Saturday in a gangway collapse on a Georgia barrier island were all in their 70s, except for one woman in her 90s, the coroner said Sunday. A portion of the gangway which collapsed Saturday afternoon remains visible on Sapelo Island in McIntosh county, Ga., on Sunday. Sapelo Island ferry service will resume Monday using an auxiliary dock, Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Tyler Jones said Sunday. It’s not clear if any of those who died in Saturday's collapse were Gullah Geechee people. Meanwhile, Grovner said, survivors of those who died Saturday will be embraced by the Gullah Geechee and their longstanding fight to exist.

PALM DESERT, Calif. — LeBron James and his son, Bronny, made NBA history Sunday night when they played together for the first time during the Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason game against Phoenix. LeBron and Bronny are the first father and son to play in any NBA game at the same time, let alone on the same team. Bronny James entered the game as a substitute to begin the second quarter, joining his father on the court out of the timeout. LeBron James is beginning his record-tying 22nd season in the NBA, while LeBron James Jr. — known to all as Bronny — was the Lakers’ second-round draft pick this summer. LeBron sat out of the Lakers’ preseason opener against Minnesota last Friday night, resting up after a full week of training camp following a busy summer.

CNN —It might have been a preseason game, but it proved to be a historic one on Sunday night. During the Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason game against the Phoenix Suns, LeBron and Bronny James became the first father/son duo to play together on an NBA team. Bronny, whose jersey is emblazed with “James Jr.” across the back, was selected 55th overall by the Lakers in the 2024 NBA draft in June, joining his father at the franchise. Lakers head coach JJ Redick said he is “thrilled” to be part of a team with LeBron and Bronny. The team will open up the NBA regular season on October 22 against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

CNN —In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s destruction, Augusta National Golf Club – the home of renowned major golf tournament, the Masters – has pledged a massive donation to help those in need in and around the Augusta area. The famed golf club in Augusta, Georgia, and the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) promised a joint $5 million contribution to the Hurricane Helene Community Crisis Fund on Thursday. “Our employees, neighbors, friends and business owners need, and deserve, immediate and meaningful assistance to overcome the hardships being experienced at this moment throughout Augusta,” chairman of Augusta National Golf Club Fred Ridley stated Thursday. “Augusta National and the Community Foundation each take to heart our obligation to care for our community. A week after Helene smashed into the Southeast, more than 200 people are dead across six states, making the hurricane the second-deadliest to hit the United States mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
