CNN —Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has made clear she has no plans to step down, according to people close to her, despite calls from some on the left that President Joe Biden should try to name a successor before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. “She’s in great health, and the court needs her now more than ever,” said one person close to the justice. Some progressives have suggested Sotomayor, the most senior liberal on the conservative Supreme Court, should step down so that Biden could try to name a replacement in the short window before Trump takes office in January. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday that he doesn’t think Sotomayor should step down from the court. In May, Sotomayor told an audience at Harvard University that she sometimes cries after the court hands down its decisions.

Republicans have averted a potential disaster in Nebraska, with NBC News projecting that Sen. Deb Fischer has won re-election to a third term. A new federal rule will prohibit schools from charging transaction fees to low-income students when their families electronically deposit funds into their lunch accounts. Kamala Harris appeared on "Saturday Night Live" for a cameo ahead of the US election. The vice president appeared alongside actor Maya Rudolph in the show's cold open. "You can do something your opponent cannot do: you can open doors," Harris joked about Trump. Harris' cameo came after James Austin Johnson's spoof of a "four-and-a-half-hour" long Donald Trump rally speech. A Montana camper whose mutilated body was found in a forest last month was brutally killed by a stranger he welcomed to his campsite and offered a beer, the authorities said this week, a gesture they contend ultimately led to the killer’s arrest. The stranger, Daren Christopher Abbey, 41, of Basin, Mont., who was working in construction in the Big Sky area of southern Montana, was arrested on Saturday after the authorities linked his DNA to that found on a beer can on the floor of a tent belonging to the victim, Dustin Kjersem, 35, according to court records. Mr. Abbey confessed on Tuesday to killing Mr. Kjersem, 35, and was later charged with deliberate homicide, Dan Springer, the sheriff of Gallatin County said at a news conference on Thursday. Mr. Abbey encountered Mr. Kjersem by chance, the authorities said, noting that they still didn’t know the motive for the killing and that the investigation could continue for months.
