GUWAHATI, India, Aug 23 (Reuters) - A railway bridge being built in India collapsed on Wednesday killing at least 26 workers and injuring two, police said, as the state-run railway authority opened an investigation. The accident happened in Sairang town in the northeastern state of Mizoram, its chief minister, Zoramthanga, said on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Media reported that up to 40 workers were at the site when the bridge collapsed but police said 28 workers were present. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said in a statement on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that the mishap occurred during work on the Bhairbi-Sairang New Line Railway Project. In October last year, a colonial-era suspension bridge collapsed in the western state of Gujarat killing 135 people.

After the Supreme Court's ruling, the lower house of parliament should now formally reinstate Gandhi. Lower courts and the high court in Gujarat, where the BJP holds power, had rejected appeals by Gandhi to suspend the conviction, prompting the appeal to the Supreme Court. Besides seeking suspension of the conviction, Gandhi has also sought to overturn it. That challenge has yet to be heard by the lower court in Gujarat. The pigeons usually carry messages written on lightweight onion paper, inserted into a capsule and then tied to a leg. MUMBAI, June 12 (Reuters) - A storm off India's west coast has strengthened to become a powerful cyclone and could hit India's western state of Gujarat and southern parts of Pakistan this week, the weather department said. India's weather office has advised fishing communities to halt operations and the evacuation of people from the coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat. Officials from the Sindh provincial government also said they are preparing to evacuate people from three districts likely to be affected. A 1998 cyclone killed at least 4,000 people and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage in Gujarat. June 8 (Reuters) - Pakistan is likely to post GDP growth of 0.29% in the fiscal year ending June 2023, the country's economic survey released on Thursday said, well below the target of 5% set last year. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar told a news conference on the annual report that 0.29% GDP growth was a "realistic achievement" and anything higher was not achievable. Average year-on-year inflation rate for the period up to May 2023 was recorded at 29.2%, the survey found. In April and May, the country's inflation hit record levels, which were also the highest in Asia. Remittances of money sent from relatives abroad were down 13% for the FY23 until April, to $22.7 billion.

"With this revival package, BSNL will emerge as a stable telecom service provider focused on providing connectivity to remotest parts of India," the cabinet said in a statement. Debt-laden BSNL, grappling with poor infrastructure, has been posting losses for the past 12 years. The losses narrowed to 69.82 billion rupees in the year ended March 2022 from 74.41 billion rupees a year ago.

NEW DELHI, June 7 (Reuters) - India's top wrestlers said they had decided to suspend protests on Wednesday after the country's sports minister promised a swift probe of their federation chief who they accused six months ago of sexually harassing female athletes. The wrestlers have been camping in New Delhi for months seeking the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has denied the allegations. Singh, a six-time member of parliament, has been accused of sexually assaulting seven female athletes, including a minor. His lawyer rejected all the allegations levelled by the wrestlers and said Singh was cooperating with the police in the probe. It has also threatened to suspend WFI if it fails to hold a fresh election this month.

NEW DELHI, June 5 (Reuters) - A suspension bridge being built in India's poorest state collapsed for the second time in 14 months, with one person reported missing, Reuters partner ANI reported on Monday. The bridge was being built over the River Ganges in Bhagalpur district of India's eastern state of Bihar. Later we found out the bridge had collapsed," Rakesh Kumar, a local resident, told ANI. Eight men were on the bridge at the time of its collapse on Sunday, with one guard reported missing, ANI said. In October last year, a colonial-era suspension bridge collapsed in the town of Morbi in the western state of Gujarat collapsed, plunging hundreds into the Machchhu river below and killing 135.
