British PM Truss tells allies to stand firm on Ukraine

Stefan Rousseau/Pool via REUTERSLONDON, Sept 25 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Liz Truss said allies should stand firm on Ukraine and ignore Russian President Vladimir Putin's "sabre-rattling", as she seeks to mend fences with democratic powers in the face of increasing threats around the world. Truss, who met U.S. President Joe Biden and France's Emmanuel Macron on her first foreign trip as prime minister to New York last week, called on like-minded democracies to be firm against "autocratic regimes". Truss said Putin was escalating his invasion of Ukraine was because he wasn't winning and had made a strategic mistake. Truss, who became prime minister earlier this month, has taken a hard line against Russia and China. "I'm determined that we make the special relationship even more special over the coming years."
No rest for the weary

Asia has woken up on Wednesday determined to test the BOJ's resolve, by pushing bond yields up and beyond policy bounds. Swaps markets are pricing Fed rates above 4 through 2023, but the Fed's own projection falls short. Will the Fed revise economic projections, too, and admit prices will take longer to stabilise than they now expect? Commodities markets and stocks are growing more weary of the prolonged debate on whether the Fed and other central banks are going too far. Now, one day after the monarch’s funeral, strikes are back on as workers press their claims for better pay and conditions and annual inflation hovers around 10%. More strikes could be on the way this fall, threatening unprecedented disruption across a range of industries. Teachers, doctors and nurses are set to vote on strike action in the coming weeks. The walkout will overlap with strike action by hundreds of dockworkers at the Port of Liverpool, another key UK trade hub. Last week, the country narrowly averted a rail strike by more than 50,000 workers after unions and railroad companies came to a tentative deal over pay.
