GM indefinitely delays Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Michael Wayland | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
DETROIT – General Motors is indefinitely delaying production of its Origin autonomous vehicle as its embattled Cruise self-driving unit attempts to relaunch operations. The Detroit automaker said Tuesday its majority-owned robotaxi unit will instead focus on using the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt for development of autonomous vehicles. Cruise has been using now-discontinued Bolts for autonomous vehicle development for several years. It was not immediately clear how many Origin vehicles the facility has produced, however it was previously reported that ex-Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt, a cofounder, told staff that hundreds of Origin vehicles had been produced. Cruise in February 2022 petitioned U.S. regulators seeking permission to deploy up to 2,500 self-driving Origin vehicles annually without the human controls.

The consumer will be in focus next week as investors head into the thick of earnings season and await some major macroeconomic reports. So far, just 14% of S & P 500 companies have reported earnings results. As one strategist noted, Wall Street is about to get insight into the economy from more than half the broad market index. The thick of earnings Earnings season is off to a strong start. Credit card company Visa will be reporting next week after American Express' results this week suggested inflationary pressures have reached the higher-end consumer.

The Taiwan Weighted Index has surged 28% so far this year, powered by stocks along the AI value chain. While Taiwan may lead Asian markets, Japan seems to be the favored market going forward, among analysts who spoke to CNBC. While most Asian markets are in positive territory year-to-date, three stock markets — Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines — fell into negative territory. The CME FedWatch tool indicates that 61% of traders expect the Fed to cut rates by 25 basis points in the September meeting.

DETROIT – General Motors' Cruise autonomous vehicle unit on Tuesday announced former Amazon and Microsoft executive Marc Whitten as its new CEO. His appointment comes at a crucial time for Cruise, which is testing and relaunching its autonomous vehicles on public roadways. Following the incident, several key leaders, including Cruise CEO and co-founder Kyle Vogt, departed the company. The probe also investigated allegations of a cover-up by Cruise leadership, but investigators did not find evidence to support those claims. Cruise was a crucial part of GM's plan to double revenue to $280 billion by the end of this decade.

An early bet on artificial intelligence thanks to a simple investment framework is helping the T. Rowe Price's Global Technology Fund (PRGTX) outperform the market for a second straight year. "Our framework led us to be early to this AI trend, [and] led us to be early to the chip intensity of this AI trend." That's due in part to its winning bets in AI names and semiconductor stocks – many of which have outperformed the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite . Early bets on AI Key to the $4.5 billion fund's recent success has been early positions in AI stocks and chipmaking darling Nvidia . The first half of the year has generally been good for the market, with the S & P 500 and the Nasdaq repeatedly reaching record highs. Year-to-date, the S & P 500 is up around 13% and the Nasdaq has risen 14.9%. Against that uncertain backdrop, investors might be looking at exchange-traded funds or mutual funds to diversify their investments. Morningstar provided the list of top-performing funds, which all beat the S & P 500. Using FactSet, that list was screened for funds that analysts give 10% or more upside, and that at least half give a buy rating.

Several investors released a joint letter this month urging fellow shareholders to vote down the package as excessive. Tesla shareholders approved the pay package in 2018, with compensation tied to Tesla's performance including its market value. And he still has time to meet goals he hasn't reached, including on revenue, because the pay package had a 10-year term. In the 440-page proxy statement explaining the vote, a committee of the Tesla board noted the "novel circumstances." Some people began sharing screenshots of their votes in April, shortly after the Tesla board announced the vote, and the deadline to vote online is June 12.

But economists cautioned that one month of encouraging data was far from enough to set those worries to rest. Both overall and core prices rose 0.3 percent from the previous month, down from 0.4 percent in February and March. The encouraging inflation report on Wednesday is unlikely to change those expectations. The report is also likely to be met with relief at the White House after what has been a rough recent run of inflation data for President Biden. Gasoline prices rose a seasonally adjusted 2.8 percent in April from March.

The Big Tech earnings next week could revive a flagging market, or at least give investors direction into where stocks are going from here. Wall Street is hoping next week's megacap tech results will give investors insight into where the artificial intelligence trade is going from here, as a bounce in tech could lift the indexes. They're also hoping a slew consumer commentary will give investors insight into the state of the economy. Trian claims Disney's board has failed to generate sufficient returns in recent years as subscription streaming losses have mounted and traditional TV subscribers have declined. Early vote countBoth Disney and Trian received support from influential shareholders ahead of Wednesday's meeting. Roughly one-third of Disney's shareholders are retail shareholders, who historically vote in small numbers in annual meetings. The arrangement still raised questions about ValueAct's support for the company and whether Disney's board should have disclosed the prior relationship. A vote for the Disney's slate of board members will show support for Iger's performance as CEO since he returned to lead the company in November 2022. "When I sold Lucasfilm just over a decade ago, I was delighted to become a Disney shareholder because of my long-time admiration for its iconic brand and Bob Iger's leadership." And proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Service recommended shareholders vote for Peltz, though not Rasulo. In 2015, Nelson Peltz's Trian Partners was defeated in an activist campaign against chemical firm DuPont , largely because the top three institutional shareholders voted against his slate. Nearly a decade later, those same institutional investors — Vanguard, State Street and BlackRock — are the three largest shareholders in Disney . Former Marvel chairman Ike Perlmutter has entrusted Peltz with his 33 million Disney shares, the bulk of the activist's 1.8% stake. Vanguard is the largest holder with 8% of outstanding Disney shares. In 2021, for example, 63% of Disney shareholders voted their shares, according to data analyzed by 13D Monitor.
