He was surprised — Kenrick told my coworker, "There's no way. My brother and I are extremely closeGrowing up, my brother Andrew Matamoros and I were always very close. My brother and my husband also knew, of course, and the wedding videographer and photographer were in on it so they could capture the moment. But I was also so happy to share the day with my brother and his now-wife. I wouldn't have shared my wedding day with anyone else.

Photo: Helmut Fricke/dpa (Photo by Helmut Fricke/picture alliance via Getty Images)Two-thirds of the jobs at Commerzbank could disappear if UniCredit successfully carries out a hostile takeover of the German lender, a Commerzbank supervisory board member warned on Tuesday. Stefan Wittmann, who is also a senior official at German trade union Verdi, told CNBC's Annette Weisbach that "we certainly hope we can avoid" a hostile takeover by the Italian bank. "But if it [a hostile takeover] is unavoidable, we think that two-thirds of jobs will disappear, that there will be another significant cut in the branches," he said, according to a translation. "We will see in particular that UniCredit does not want all Commerzbank customers at all, but that it focuses on the supposedly best customers, namely the wealthy customers," he added.

UniCredit announced on Monday it had increased its stake in German lender Commerzbank to around 21% and submitted a request to boost the holding to up to 29.9%. The Italian bank acquired the additional Commerzbank shares through financial instruments, it said in a Monday statement. Earlier this month, UniCredit announced it had taken a 9% stake in Commerzbank, confirming that half of this shareholding was acquired from the German government. However, as was the case for UniCredit, such potential requires action for it to be crystalized," the bank said on Monday. Commerzbank shares were down 0.4% by 11:50 a.m. London time, while UniCredit shares fell 2.3%.

The 10-year Treasury yield was around 2 basis points lower at 3.7168%. The 2-year Treasury note yield was down around 2 basis points at 3.5784%. U.S. Treasury bond yields were lower on Friday following the release of lower-than-expected jobless claims in the wake of the Federal Reserve's jumbo rate cut. The Federal Reserve's decision on Wednesday to slash interest rates by 50 basis points comes amid a week full of central bank rate decisions. The Bank of England announced on Thursday it would hold interest rates steady after cutting rates for the first time in more than four years in August.

Last week, UniCredit announced it had taken a 9% stake in Commerzbank, confirming that half of this shareholding was acquired from the government. Commerzbank shares jumped 20% on the day UniCredit's stake was announced. A cross-border styled merger between UniCredit and Commerzbank would be more preferential than a domestic merger between Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank, according to Reint Gropp, president of the Hall Institute for Economic Research. "The German banking structure is long overdue for a consolidation process. The German bank also has less excess capital than UniCredit and therefore "cannot really afford" a takeover, Alloatti said.

Tuesday's retail sales data boosted soft landing outlooks. AdvertisementIndexes were mixed on Tuesday with investors still split on the potential size of an interest rate cut, with less than 24-hours to go before the Federal Reserve announces its policy decision. Unanticipated strength in Tuesday's retail sales data convinced investors that the economy remains robust, and the S&P 500 briefly hit a record high before paring gains. Bond yields edged up ahead of the Fed decision, nodding to the possibility that the odds of a jumbo rate cut fell after retail sales surprised to the upside. AdvertisementStrong retail sales suggest that the Fed does not necessarily have to hurry with larger cuts, as the consumer economy appears intact for now.

The U.S. economy created 818,000 fewer jobs than originally reported in the 12-month period through March 2024, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. Wall Street had been waiting for the revisions numbers, with many economists expecting a sizeable reduction in the originally reported figures. "The labor market appears weaker than originally reported," said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial. "A deteriorating labor market will allow the Fed to highlight both sides of the dual mandate and investors should expect the Fed to prepare markets for a cut at the September meeting." Nonfarm payroll jobs totaled 158.7 million through July, an increase of 1.6% from the same month in 2023.

Hong Kong CNN —Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ running mate has a decades-long connection with China. “I remember waking up and seeing the news on June 4 that the unthinkable had happened,” Walz told Voice of America in an interview in 2014. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon taking students on two-week tours in China for sightseeing and classes on culture, education and history. In Chinese nationalist circles, which have an outsized voice on policy debates in China, there are no rosy illusions about Walz. The hashtag “Harris’ VP pick once taught in China” racked up 15 million views on microblogging site Weibo.

The Italian fashion house's alcohol-free fragrance mist for dogs, which costs £83 ($105) on its U.K. website, is inspired by Fefé, the pet dog of brand-owner Domenico Dolce. However, the fragrance has drawn some concern from animal welfare organizations and experts who warn that perfumes can interfere with a dog's sense of smell. Oils such as ylang ylang which is included in Fefé, can also have a positive effect, he said. RSPCA's Potter also noted that some "lightly-scented products," which do not use aversive scents or interfere with a dog's sense of smell, can have a calming effect.

Carly Still had been working as a gardener in the Hudson Valley when she decided to move to the city 13 years ago. She happened onto a part-time position at the Met Cloisters, in Upper Manhattan, where she encountered many plants for the first time — ones with curious common names like skirret, weld and costmary — and others that she knew too well, or thought she did. Among the familiar ones were several that she had removed whenever she came upon them in her old job. Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), for example, is tricky to garden around in cultivated areas, as anyone who has accidentally grabbed a handful while weeding or brushed bare skin against it will attest. She also recognized greater burdock (Arctium lappa), broadleaf plantain (Plantago major) and even some dandelions in the Bonnefont Cloister Herb Garden, one of three main gardens at the museum of medieval art that opened in 1938 as a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

According to Prasad and other experts, Harris' approach to China would likely be similar to that of Biden. Trump's biggest diversion from Biden-era trade policy would likely be tariffs levied on China. The Trump administration reached a "phase one trade deal" with China in 2019, but few terms were honored and subsequent phases never materialized. Tech warwatch nowThe Biden administration also announced rules limiting U.S. investment in Chinese firms developing sensitive technologies, citing national security concerns. She said channels for the two countries to discuss policy issues decreased significantly during the Trump administration, whereas the Biden administration emphasized its diplomatic engagement efforts.

A double whammyFor aspiring homebuyers such as Burress, the combination of high mortgage rates and rising list prices has left them feeling boxed out. The 30-year mortgage rate, a popular option for home financing in the U.S., has bounced around 7% for the past several months. Given this, co-author Jonah Coste said current owners touting these low mortgage rates are undoubtedly better off than those looking to buy a first home today. After welcoming three kids, they're holding off on a fourth until mortgage rates or home prices come down enough to upsize. To be clear, mortgage rates tend to follow the path of Fed-set interest levels, but they aren't the same thing.

Elon Musk's X is in breach of EU online content rules as the social media platform uses "dark patterns" to deceive users, the European Commission said Friday. The body's preliminary view, published Friday, is that the platform has broken rules regarding dark patterns, advertising transparency and data access for researchers. X's use of the blue checkmark for "verified accounts" does not correspond to industry practices as anyone can subscribe and obtain a verified status, the commission said. It added that there was evidence of "motivated malicious actors" abusing the verified status to deceive users. If the commission's views are confirmed, X could face a fine of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
