An NYPD officer and another woman were shot in Queens by an armed robbery suspect who was believed to be responsible for multiple robberies within the span of just about an hour, according to police. As police searched for the suspect, officers were flagged down by a witness who pointed out a man on Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street. The witness told police the man had just robbed a smoke shop on Guy Brewer Boulevard, and fired a shot while doing so, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny. After being ordered to drop his weapon, the suspect fired once, hitting Officer Rich Wong in the thigh, Kenny said at a press conference from the hospital. Worthy, who had been arrested for seven crimes since 2001, was also wanted for three other robberies at gunpoint, according to police.

Riley’s family cried and multiple gasps and sobs were heard in the courtroom when the first guilty decision was announced. The defense questioned the quality of that DNA evidence and its analysis. The vast networks of data cables that crisscross our world's oceans are crucial for almost every aspect of modern life. Related Video Ukraine's sea drones vs. Russia's Black Sea FleetDespite their importance, events this week have highlighted just how vulnerable the West's internet subsea cables are to attacks from hostile powers. Unlike Russia, whose internet cables mostly run overland, the cables Western countries rely on are deep under the sea — and it's an asymmetrical vulnerability Russia is signaling it could exploit. AdvertisementIn response to the threat, Western countries are trying to better protect existing cable networks or route data through satellites if they are disrupted. In the CSIS report in August, Murphy and other analysts called for the US to strengthen international coordination and enhance resources to protect existing undersea cable networks.

AdvertisementI first went to law school in Mexico, where people were more open to friendships. However, the top three global financial hubs (New York, London, and Singapore) belong to common law countries. The US has a common law system, meaning that laws come from uncodified case law resulting from court decisions. Law schools in Mexico take a more theoretical approach, while law schools in the US focus on the practical side. In my case, both law schools made sure we acknowledged this in order to understand how useful we can be.

Bond vigilantes may pressure Washington to address deficits, affecting fiscal policy decisions. Wall Street doesn't constantly look to Washington for investment advice or direction, but the bond market is one place where they definitely intercept. The tipping point would create headwinds for the bond market as bond prices drop. The deficit is another sore spot, as promised tax cuts could further shrink government revenue. And this must be done by showing how they will offset tax cuts and remain fiscally responsible.

Parker Solar Probe is poised to make the closest approach to the sun attempted by a spacecraft in late December, while Solar Orbiter is tasked with taking the closest-ever images of the sun’s surface. What’s more, the Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe are studying the sun at close distances at an ideal time — during the peak of its annual cycle. “These new high-resolution maps from Solar Orbiter’s PHI instrument show the beauty of the Sun’s surface magnetic field and flows in great detail. A magnetogram shows the line-of-sight direction of the sun's magnetic field, which clusters around sunspots. The veteran researcher said baby boomers aren't selling, restricting the number of homes available. Home prices are poised to fall by up to a fifth as the frozen housing market thaws — and that could help baby boomers sell at last and younger people to become homeowners, Meredith Whitney says. Advertisement"The problem is the baby boomers own 60% of the housing stock," she said, referring to single-family, owner-occupied homes. AdvertisementSeveral economists have predicted a "silver tsunami" as baby boomers sell their homes to downsize or move into care homes, increasing the available supply of single-family homes and reducing prices.

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered prosecutors to get rid of copies of 19 pages of notes taken from Sean "Diddy" Combs' jail cell after his lawyers argued the seizure violated attorney-client privilege. Judge Arun Subramanian ruled Tuesday that the court will keep the papers while prosecutors and Combs’ lawyers submit briefs on the issue over the next few weeks. The music mogul has denied both the charges as well as prosecutors' allegations that he’s tampering with witnesses from jail. The long-standing promise of a ban on menthol cigarettes, which has been years in the making, is unlikely to move forward before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. The FDA announced it would begin the process of banning menthol tobacco cigarettes in 2021. Since then, it has done all it is legally authorized to do to put the finalized rule to ban menthol in motion. But it’s politics, not public health, that is likely to keep menthol cigarettes on the market as Biden’s term ends. Murthy deferred questions about whether the Biden administration would push the ban through as one of its final acts.

But it also complicated the diplomatic dance leaders attending the G20 summit must partake in as they navigate the complex geopolitical dynamics of the bloc. Lavrov attended the G20 in place of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who faced questions about whether he could be arrested for war crimes on international soil. In his remarks at the close of the summit, Lavrov also hailed the German government’s refusal to send Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine as a “responsible stance,” TASS reported. There had been hope among western officials of a strong statement denouncing Russia’s invasion at the conclusion of the summit. American officials were unsurprised to learn Moscow had updated its nuclear doctrine following Biden’s decision on long-range missiles.

CNN —A powerful “bomb cyclone” will combine with an atmospheric river to unleash over a month’s worth of rain, hurricane-force wind gusts and feet of mountain snow to parts of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. This bomb cyclone will work with an atmospheric river, a long plume of water vapor moving like a river through the atmosphere, to wring out heavy rainfall and significant mountain snowfall in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California beginning Tuesday. The pair will stall along the coast and hammer the area with hazardous conditions through the week and into the weekend. Rainfall of this magnitude is expected to cause significant urban flooding, debris flow on roadways and river flooding. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service office in Seattle warned.
