Big brands have seen earnings propelled by double-digit price hikes – even if it has had a negative impact on demand elasticity. Only two-thirds (67%) of the companies that have reported have beat earnings estimates, the lowest beat rate in eight years. But workforce reductions aren't the only way for companies to cut costs, or necessarily the best way in a tight labor market. We've seen notable examples across industries of just how important general cost cuts have been this earnings season. Of course, Airbnb was one of the first companies to cut costs when the pandemic hit.

Intel 's earnings miss and weak guidance is "something special," according to Bernstein senior analyst Stacy Rasgon. The company missed expectations of analysts polled by Refiitiv for both adjusted per-share earnings and revenue in the fourth quarter. The company also offered guidance for first-quarter per-share earnings and revenue that was below Refinitiv's respective consensus estimates. Intel is expecting an adjusted net loss of 15 cents per share on $10.5 billion to $11.5 billion in revenue, compared with Refinitiv's expected 24-cent gain in per-share earnings on $13.93 billion in revenue. LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) was on Wednesday set to raise three billion euros from the sale of a bond due in March 2029 by its holding company, Refinitiv's capital markets news service IFR reported. Investor orders for the bond, callable in March 2028, exceeded 7.5 billion euros and it was set to be priced at a spread of 495 basis points over the mid-swap level, IFR said. Credit Suisse was the sole bookrunner for the bond, expected to be rated Baa2/BBB-/BBB by Moody's, S&P and Fitch, IFR said. Last week S&P Global Ratings downgraded Credit Suisse Group's long-term credit rating to one step above junk bond status, citing "material execution risks" in the bank's efforts to get back on solid ground after a series of scandals and losses. Prism Brilliance, Prism Diversity and Prism Courage were waiting off the coast from the plant, and Prism Agility was expected to arrive around Nov. 29. In what has already been an extremely volatile week, front-month gas futures rose 42.5 cents, or 7.1%, to settle at $6.400 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), the highest close since Oct. 14. Nov 1 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas futures dropped about 10% on Tuesday, following a 12% rise on Monday as traders took profits during a period of extreme volatility after the latest forecasts called for the weather to remain mild for the next two weeks. Analysts at energy consulting firm Gelber & Associates said the "early week surge in ... gas futures (saw) signs of exhaustion today as profit-takers pile on." Front-month gas futures fell 64.1 cents, or 10.1%, to settle at $5.714 per million British thermal units (mmBtu). Oct 28 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas futures fell about 3% on Friday on record output and forecasts for mild weather and low heating demand through mid November, which should allow utilities to inject more gas into storage than usual for at least a few more weeks. The market was still waiting for the return of Freeport LNG's export plant in Texas. On its first day as the front-month, gas futures for December delivery fell 19.1 cents, or 3.3%, to settle at $5.684 per million British thermal units (mmBtu). During the first nine months of 2022, roughly 60%, or 6.3 bcfd, of U.S. LNG exports went to Europe, as shippers diverted cargoes from Asia to fetch higher prices. Last year, just 29%, or about 2.8 bcfd, of U.S. LNG exports went to Europe.
Oct 24 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas futures jumped about 5% after sliding to a fresh seven-month low earlier in the session on a technical rebound and expectations demand would rise as liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports increase once export plants exit maintenance outages in coming weeks. Some traders expect Freeport will return to service in November while others believe the return will be delayed. Front-month gas futures rose 24.0 cents, or 4.8%, to settle at $5.199 per million British thermal units (mmBtu).
Oct 18 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas futures fell about 4% on Tuesday to a three-month low as oil and European gas prices dropped and forecasters called for milder U.S. weather over the next two weeks. U.S. gas prices have been declining for eight weeks as record domestic output and reduced liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have allowed utilities to inject much more gas than usual into storage. Last year, just 29%, or about 2.8 bcfd, of U.S. LNG exports went to Europe. With milder weather coming, Refinitiv projected average U.S. gas demand, including exports, would fall from 101.0 bcfd this week to 95.9 bcfd next week. U.S. LNG exports, however, could start to rise this week if Cove Point returns to service as some traders expect.

Asian currencies will likely continue weakening for another quarter — if not more, as U.S. interest rates rise, the Economist Intelligence Unit said. The EIU said it expects further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve in November and December, although "the risk is rising that rate increases will occur at a faster pace than we currently anticipate." The contrast between the Fed's tightening and the monetary easing in some Asian economies, such as Japan and China, means the U.S. dollar would be more buoyant and there will be more downward pressure on Asian currencies. "As the Federal Reserve signals a more hawkish approach to monetary policy to curb inflation, Asian currencies extended their losses against the US dollar in September," the economics group said in an analysis on Thursday. "We expect that the pressure facing Asian currencies will last for another quarter, if not longer."
REUTERS/Nick OxfordSept 21 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas futures jumped about 4% to a near one-week high on Wednesday, on forecasts for stronger U.S. gas demand this week than previously expected and renewed worries about a possible U.S. rail strike. A rail strike could boost demand for gas by threatening coal supplies to power plants. Gas prices rose despite expectations gas demand would decline next month when the Cove Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Maryland shuts for a couple weeks of maintenance in October. Global gas prices have soared due to supply disruptions and sanctions linked to Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. With the coming of cooler autumn weather, Refinitiv projected average U.S. gas demand, including exports, would slip from 92.3 bcfd this week to 89.8 bcfd next week.
