But for now, few in Moscow expect the bipartisan U.S. political consensus on Ukraine to crack, whatever the result of Tuesday's midterm elections. Nor do they expect Washington's support for Kyiv to dip significantly anytime soon. "However, the Biden administration will find it more difficult to push financial aid programmes to Kyiv through Congress, and the position of U.S. critics of unlimited aid to Ukraine will markedly strengthen." "Even if it survives as a single state, the United States will change dramatically and its global position will weaken under any circumstances," Akopov opined. "Without a strong and united (United) States the West will not be able to maintain control over western Russian lands for long."

The U.S. Air Force dispatched two F-16 fighter jets to intercept a pair of Russian bombers that flew close to Alaska on Monday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement. Air Defense Identification Zones are areas of airspace that require all aircraft to be identified, located and have their flight plan controlled "in the interest of national security," according to the Federal Aviation Administration. NORAD, a combined air defense organization of the United States and Canada, said the Russian activity was "not seen as a threat nor is the activity seen as provocative." The appearance of Russian bombers and their interception by U.S. fighter jets does come at a fraught time in the relationship between the two countries, however. He noted that his deputy, Pyotr Tolstoy, had previously proposed holding a referendum in Alaska, RBC reported.

Mattson, whose partner is Ukrainian, wrote on social media: "We held a two-man referendum on annexing the parking spot to Ukraine." Virtala, a self-employed property manager, told Insider that after the paint dried, the diplomat's car returned. "If Ukrainians ask me to, I'd be happy to do my part in washing off the colors," Mattson told Insider.
