With a salary of $174,000 per year, members of Congress make more than 80% of American households. Stunted salary growth and limited perksThe salaries for members of Congress haven't budged in nearly 15 years. Historically, Democrats have been more willing to push for higher pay for members of Congress, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. For simplicity's sake, let's put the number at $274,000 — a $100,000 raise for members of Congress. Nor is jacking up lawmakers' salaries likely to be a panacea that solves every problem in a troubled institution.

Patrick McHenry , who steered the House through unprecedented turmoil as the temporary speaker for three weeks earlier this year, said he wouldn’t run for re-election. “I will be retiring from Congress at the end of my current term,” McHenry said in a statement Tuesday. “This is not a decision I come to lightly, but I believe there is a season for everything and—for me—this season has come to an end.”

US Representative Patrick McHenry (R-NC) speaks to members of the media outside the office of US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on October 3, 2023. WASHINGTON — Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., announced Tuesday that he won't seek re-election in 2024, a shocking move to many of his colleagues that will further thin the ranks of Republican institutionalists in Congress. He gained national attention during his three-week stint in October as House Speaker pro tempore after Republicans ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from the position. Despite his solidly conservative positions and voting record, McHenry is seen on Capitol Hill as a pragmatist and widely respected in both parties. During the speaker battle, McHenry was cited by Democratic leaders as the sort of GOP lawmaker who they trust enough to work with.

WASHINGTON — One of crypto's most powerful allies in Congress is fighting this week to make sure that an industry-backed regulation bill gets tacked on to the must-pass defense funding legislation. If he is successful, Rep. Patrick McHenry's (R-N.C.) hardball tactics could hand the cryptocurrency industry a big win. The bill is intended to clarify how crypto is regulated by federal agencies. But McHenry's bill has never been put to a vote in the full House, let alone in the Senate. Instead, McHenry, who chairs the Financial Services Committee, is pushing to attach his bill to the massive annual Pentagon funding measure the National Defense Authorization Act.

New York CNN —Unless you’re an avid currency collector, an employee of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, or work at the Federal Reserve, you likely didn’t know that last year a record number of $50 bills were printed. Last year, the government printed 756,096,000 of those bills — the highest total of the denomination printed in one year in more than 40 years. In 2019, only 3.5% of all US bills printed were $50s. To understand why so many $50 bills were printed, it’s important to know how the system of printing money works. But, more likely, and more realistically, people tend to avoid using $50 bills due to them being confused with $5 or $20 bills and many stores not accepting bills larger than $20.

Friday's announcements suggest lawmakers will continue to pile pressure on Gruenberg over revelations about a key agency in the Biden administration's financial reform agenda. In a letter, Republican members of the House Financial Services Committee on Friday publicly notified Gruenberg of a probe announced earlier this week. An FDIC spokesperson told Reuters the agency would be "fully transparent and cooperative" with the committee's investigation. An FDIC OIG representative told Reuters on Friday the office had received the Senate Democrats' request and was reviewing it. "Chairman Gruenberg, the viability of your leadership is in question," wrote House Financial Services Committee Chair Patrick McHenry and senior members Bill Huizenga and Andy Barr, all Republicans.

In a statement, FDIC Vice Chairman Travis Hill and board member Jonathan McKernan said that "at a minimum" Gruenberg and FDIC General Counsel Harrel Pettway should recuse themselves from the internal review of workplace conduct at the agency. "It is clear Mr. Gruenberg never should have been reappointed or confirmed in the first place," McHenry said. McHenry also said Gruenberg had "initially misled" the committee during testimony on Wednesday, at first claiming he had not been the subject of an investigation to his workplace conduct before acknowledging that he had. The day Congress went back to fourth grade

The 118th Congress, which took an initial step to punt funding deadlines to the winter, looked more like a fourth grade class on a day that will further erode trust in government ahead of next year’s elections. Across Capitol Hill in the world’s so-called greatest deliberative body, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin was spoiling for a prize fight. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, however, suggested that policing the Capitol was beyond even his wily capacity to enforce discipline within his conference. And only in the malfunctioning Congress would a speaker try to prevent one government shutdown by laying the possible path for two others. Israel and Ukraine have nothing to thank Congress forThe most glaring example of Congress’ failure to fulfill its duty on Tuesday came at a pro-Israel demonstration on the National Mall.

Conservatives also say Johnson, who was a rank-and-file member up until this point, hasn’t broken their trust yet. “Kevin was in a very difficult situation when that happened,” Johnson told CNN. But it wasn’t enough to win them over; the House Freedom Caucus took an official position against the plan. “Speaker Johnson must reassert his authority in this fight,” Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry, a Pennsylvania Republican, said ahead of the vote. “I think if you’re going to oust a speaker of the House from your conference, the red line should remain the same for the next speaker,” Greene said.

US lawmakers demand FDIC watchdog briefing on workplace culture

REUTERS/Jason Reed/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 14 (Reuters) - Republican lawmakers on the House Financial Services Committee said Tuesday they were calling for an urgent briefing from a government watchdog to address reported allegations of pervasive sexual harassment at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg was likely to face questioning on the matter during Congressional hearings with other top banking regulators this week, including a Wednesday appearance before the House Financial Services Committee. Gruenberg on Monday told staff the agency would not tolerate sexual harassment and announced that the agency had hired an outside law firm to review its internal practices. The FDIC Office of Inspector General (OIG) reported in 2020 that the FDIC's efforts to prevent sexual harassment were inadequate. "As is our practice, we will continue to monitor management challenges at the FDIC as they are brought to the attention of the OIG, including matters related to sexual harassment," said FDIC Chief of Staff Jon Lebruto.

Johnson of Louisiana, a lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, becomes the fourth Republican nominee in what has become an almost absurd cycle of political infighting since Kevin McCarthy's ouster as GOP factions jockey for power. “I made my decision based on my relationship with the conference,” he said, referring to the GOP majority. House Republicans returned behind closed doors, where they spend much of their time, desperately searching for a leader who can unite the factions, reopen the House and get the U.S. Congress working again. In the end, Johnson won 128 votes on the evening ballot, more than any other candidate. With Republicans controlling the House 221-212 over Democrats, any GOP nominee can afford just a few detractors to win the gavel.

Follow our live updates for the House speaker nominee vote. House Republicans have elected two nominees for the job since a hard-right clutch of lawmakers toppled Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The math can change if there are absences, or if any lawmakers vote “present” rather than in support of a candidate. Mr. Jeffries has pitched the idea of forming a coalition government that he describes as an “enlightened arrangement.” But the idea is a long shot. Empowering Mr. McHenry, one of Mr. McCarthy’s closest allies, was regarded by many far-right members as akin to reinstalling Mr. McCarthy as speaker.

U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives for a House Republican conference meeting to choose a nominee in the race for House Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, October 24, 2023. Rep. Tom Emmer is the latest Republican nominee for speaker of the House, and that could mean a fresh headache for the nation's largest business lobbying group. Emmer, like former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, is one of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's biggest critics among House Republicans. A lack of engagement with House Republican leadership, particularly the speaker, could mean that the Chamber will have little impact on future legislation. The Chamber has continued to support Republicans despite the criticism the group has received from House Republican leadership.

Having dispatched their speaker then rejected two popular GOP figures as replacements, the House Republicans on Tuesday will be voting instead on a hodge-podge of lesser-known congressmen for speaker, a powerful position second in line to the presidency. No one is expected to emerge from first-round voting and Republicans are planning to stay behind closed doors until they can agree on a nominee. Launched over right-flank complaints about McCarthy's leadership in budget battles, it's no longer clear what the House Republicans are fighting for and if they will end up with a more acceptable speaker. Trump has intervened from the sidelines backing hard-charging Rep. Jim Jordan over Majority Leader Steve Scalise. “You’re gonna have to use persuasion.”Trump, brushing back suggestions that he take the gavel himself, suggested Monday that no one is capable of uniting the House Republicans.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, speaks to members of the media following a House Republican caucus meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, US, on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023. Emmer, the Republican majority whip, prevailed over a crowded field of eight GOP candidates after several rounds of voting Tuesday morning. Interim Speaker Patrick McHenry has said the nominee could face a vote before the House floor as soon as Tuesday. It is unclear if Emmer can secure the 217 Republican votes needed on the House floor. He can only afford to lose four GOP votes, as Democrats have lined up in lockstep behind their nominee, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.

CNN —Rep. Tom Emmer, the House majority whip whose bid for House speaker was thrown into immediate jeopardy Tuesday afternoon, has tried to balance an at-times moderate voting record while trying to appeal to the Donald Trump-aligned base of the Republican Party. The Minnesota Republican emerged Tuesday afternoon as House Republicans’ new speaker nominee in the scramble to succeed Kevin McCarthy. Several Republicans who oppose Emmer told CNN Tuesday they will not change their stance and are calling for a new candidate. As majority whip, Emmer has experience with keeping the GOP’s narrow majority in line. McCarthy has backed the Minnesota Republican for speaker and urged the conference to elect him by the end of the week.

House Republicans have elected two nominees for the job since a hard-right clutch of lawmakers toppled Speaker Kevin McCarthy. House Republicans cast aside Mr. Jordan as their nominee for speaker on Friday in a secret-ballot vote, essentially moving to begin the search for a new leader all over again. The math can change if there are absences, or if any lawmakers vote “present” rather than in support of a candidate. WASHINGTON (AP) — Day 20 without a House speaker, and Republicans found themselves starting over on Monday — bumbling ahead with few ideas about who will lead, what they are fighting over and when they will get Congress working again. Nine lower-level Republican lawmakers are now running to be speaker, leader of the House and second in line to the presidency — none with any clear shot for the gavel. McCarthy himself calls the whole spectacle “embarrassing” for the House Republicans whose majority is being wasted away and for the U.S. government that cannot fully function. Interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry of North Carolina said he wants the nominee to face a House vote as soon as Tuesday. His failure came after the party's original nominee, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, bowed out of the race because he could not secure enough GOP votes. Historically, political realignment has occurred when groups of voters change their affiliation to a new political party or candidate, especially around presidential and midterm elections. Yet the period between 1852 and 1860 is crucial here, for it saw the last time a major political party collapsed (the Whig Party in 1854) and the dissolution of another political party (the Democratic Party in 1860). The 1924 Democratic Party famously went through 103 ballots before agreeing on a compromise candidate, John W. Davis of West Virginia. Of course, party realignment is a tricky thing since we only come to know that it has happened in hindsight. A failure to reach a majority consensus signals the doom of an American political party.

Tuesday marks three full weeks without a House speaker and 24 days until the government runs out of money, to say nothing of aid packages many lawmakers want for Israel and Ukraine. House Republicans entered the weekend without their leading speaker candidate, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who dropped out of the race on Friday. "This is embarrassing for the Republican Party, embarrassing for the nation," former speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Ca., said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Former Republican Rep.
