A federal appeals court on Wednesday refused to block a lower-court ruling allowing Americans to bet on the outcome of the 2024 congressional elections. The CFTC had barred KalshiEx from listing its congressional contracts on the exchange, which the commission regulates, on the ground that they would violate the laws of many states that ban gambling on elections. But a judge in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., ruled last month that the CFTC had erred in finding that KalshiEx's congressional contracts involved gaming or gambling. That ruling was in effect for only about eight hours before the D.C. appeals court stayed it at the request of the CFTC. That administrative stay was lifted in Wednesday's ruling.

CNN —An image of a peregrine falcon chasing a butterfly, a vulture feasting on a black bear and a surfing penguin are among the winning images of Bird Photographer of the Year 2024. “We create this impactful display to honor the lives lost and increase public awareness,” Homonylo said in a statement. Will Nicholls, director of Bird Photographer of the Year, told CNN that the competition allows people to view things they may not be able to see for themselves. The title of Young Bird Photographer of the Year was awarded to 14-year-old Spanish photographer Andrés Luis Domínguez Blanco for a vivid image of a nuthatch — a small bird similar to a woodpecker — scrambling down an oak tree in Grazalema in southern Spain. The images cover a huge range of species, environments and behaviors – some are comedic while others carry a serious message.

Covid lockdowns, such as school closures, canceled sports activities and stay-at-home orders, prematurely aged teen brains by as much as four years, researchers from the University of Washington found. Lead researcher Patricia Kuhl, co-director of I-LABS, said that after Covid lockdowns began in 2020, they couldn’t do brain scan follow-ups until 2021. Pandemic lockdowns resulted in unusually accelerated brain maturation in adolescents. The research doesn’t prove the lockdowns caused the brain changes — mental health disorders were rising among children even before Covid. Another brain scan study in 2022 from Stanford University showed similar changes in cortical thickness in teen brains during Covid restrictions.

“Teens need our support now more than ever.”Significant socioemotional development occurs during adolescence, along with substantial changes to brain structure and function. The researchers originally intended to track ordinary adolescent brain development over time, starting with MRIs the authors conducted on participants’ brains in 2018. The study revealed accelerated cortical thinning in the post-pandemic brains of teens — occurring in 30 brain regions across both hemispheres and all lobes for girls, and in only two regions for boys. The prevalence of the thinning amounted to 43% and 6% of the studied brain regions for girls and boys, respectively. The regions affected in boys’ brains are involved in processing objects in the visual field as well as faces.
