Read previewA contentious judging decision and messy appeals process has roiled women's gymnastics — and spiraled into an international argument for Olympic bronze between the US and Romania. It kicked the final decision to the International Olympic Committee, which ordered Chiles to return her bronze medal. On Sunday, USA Gymnastics said it had video evidence — which it hadn't previously submitted — which proved Landi's inquiry was made within 47 seconds. USA Gymnastics vowed Monday to "continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal." USA Gymnastics declined to comment beyond the statements on its website.

CNN —American gymnast Jordan Chiles and the US Olympic team may very well feel like protagonists in a Franz Kafka novel, as they find themselves trapped in an increasingly surreal scenario while attempting to reclaim her bronze medal. Dr. Hamid G. Gharavi, Philippe Sands and Song Lu sat on the panel, of which Gharavi was the president, according to CAS. USA Gymnastics said Monday it can prove that a coach's appeal that put gymnast Jordan Chiles on the podium for a bronze medal in Paris was by the book, but the effort may be futile because the governing court said its rules don't allow for reconsideration in this case. However, Monday’s statement calls into question whether Chiles can keep her medal, which the International Olympic Committee said she must return, upholding the CAS ruling. “USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in its statement. But Chiles' coach, Cecile Landi, filed an inquiry, which was accepted and resulted in an elevated score of 13.766, allowing Chiles to leapfrog Bărbosu for bronze. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation and Bărbosu subsequently filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing the inquiry was too late.

PARIS — Jordan Chiles is a rarity in Olympic history: an athlete forced to return their medal for reasons other than a doping violation. On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee said that the appeal shouldn’t have been allowed, meaning she will have to return her third-place prize. In 2017, the Russian Olympic Committee said that none of the 18 athletes stripped of their medals because of doping violations had returned the physical awards. After Chiles’ bronze bumped Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu off the podium, the country’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said he’d refuse to attend the closing ceremony in protest. “Given these circumstances, we are committed to pursuing an appeal to help Jordan Chiles receive the recognition she deserves,” the U.S. committee said.

USA gymnast Jordan Chiles was stripped of her first individual Olympic medal after the Romanian gymnastics team challenged her final score. But as the stadium erupted in celebration over Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade’s gold medal, USA Gymnastics Coach Cecile Landi filed an inquiry over Chiles’ difficulty score. Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles playfully bow to Brazil's Rebeca Andrade during the Olympic medal ceremony. They argued the USA Gymnastics inquiry was filed 4 seconds after the one-minute deadline and Chiles’ initial score of 13.666 should be upheld. Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games: What can we expect?

CNN —The Paris Games are over, the Olympic flame that hung suspended in a cauldron above the Jardins de Tuileries extinguished, and the Olympic flag handed over to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games. Now only a mere 1,432 days away, the LA Olympics begins on July 14, 2028 with its opening ceremony and will run until July 30. So, what can we expect from the Los Angeles Olympic Games in four years’ time? Los Angeles has already hosted two Olympics, in 1932 and 1984, leaving enough infrastructure in place that there won’t be any new permanent venues built for 2028, and athletes will be housed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), instead of a purpose-built Olympic Village. Although it isn’t yet clear exactly where each and every sport will take place in Los Angeles, organizers have already announced some of their biggest venues.

“The IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Bǎrbosu (Romania),” the statement said. But her coach, Cecile Landi, submitted an inquiry to challenge the difficulty score Chiles had received. The court agreed, invalidating Chiles’ score, and the International Gymnastics Federation, known as FIG, then announced that it had officially changed the ranking of the competition, putting Chiles back in fifth place. “The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring,” the statement said. On Sunday, the American gymnast Jordan Chiles became the latest athlete to lose one. At the Paris Olympics, Ms. Chiles had won bronze in the individual floor exercise. That appeal, however, came four seconds too late, a court ruled, reinstating Ms. Chiles’s original score. The bronze will now go to Ana Barbosu of Romania, according to the International Olympic Committee. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee intends to appeal the ruling.

To Carly Duguid, the creative director for tennis and fashion star Naomi Osaka, luxury fashion and athletics are the perfect combination. Osaka was the first athlete to partner with Louis Vuitton, whose roster now includes Victor Wembanyama, Carlos Alcaraz, and many French Olympians and Paralympians. LVMH has looked to make a big splash beyond just athlete partnerships, becoming the first luxury brand to be an Olympic sponsor.

CNN —The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that the bronze medal given to American gymnast Jordan Chiles in the floor exercise at the Paris Games will be awarded to her Romanian counterpart Ana Bărbosu. And the IOC confirmed that the score change will mean Chiles will be stripped of her bronze and given to Bărbosu. Ana Bărbosu reacts after competing in the women's floor exercise. Immediately after the competition finished on Monday with Chiles’ routine, Bărbosu thought she had won the bronze medal after posting a score of 13.700. However, CAS’ ruling that the inquiry submitted on behalf of Chiles “was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline” stipulated in the regulations threw Chiles’ medal into doubt.

After learning that she might lose the bronze medal she won in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics — the only individual medal she won at these Summer Games — the American gymnast Jordan Chiles took to social media on Saturday and posted four broken heart emojis on a black background. That’s four broken hearts for the four seconds that cost her a bronze medal. The International Olympic Committee confirmed on Sunday that it would strip Chiles of her bronze medal and give it to Romania’s Ana Barbosu. The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee said Sunday it would appeal the reallocation of Chiles’s medal. “We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal,” it said in a statement.

U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles might lose her bronze medal. She had placed fifth before the inquiry, behind both Romanians, but received a tenth back on her final score, boosting her onto the podium. In one, the team asked that the 0.1 point penalty for stepping out of bounds on Maneca-Voinea's final score be returned because it was "given without basis." It also requested that Chiles, Maneca-Voinea and Bărbosu all be placed in third and earn bronze medals. If she had not received the deduction, Maneca-Voinea would have scored higher than Bărbosu and Chiles, even after Chiles' score was increased on appeal.

CAS said it’s now up to the International Gymnastics Federation to determine how medals should be reassigned given the ruling. GO DEEPER How a score inquiry led to gymnast Jordan Chiles' Olympic bronzeThe appeal by the Romanian federation requested all three athletes be placed in third and allocated medals, the court said in its release. CNN —The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Saturday that the initial inquiry made by the USA over Jordan Chiles’ score in Monday’s gymnastics floor exercise final was filed after the one-minute deadline. That means that Chiles’ score is being reverted to the original 13.666, which was only good enough for fifth place. It’s unclear as of Saturday what that means for the bronze medal that Chiles was awarded. Immediately after the competition finished on Monday with Chiles’ routine, Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu thought she had won the bronze medal after posting a score of 13.700. CNN has reached out to the FIG to ask what their ruling will be on whether Chiles’ medal will be revoked.
