It is the second contest between the two after Mnangagwa won a closely contested poll in 2018, which the opposition allege was rigged. Some 6.6 million people are registered to vote in the nation of about 15 million. LITTLE CHANGE SINCE MUGABE ERAPolitical analysts say Zimbabwe's unending economic maelstrom could tip the contest in favour of the opposition if the election is clean. We will not accept a rigged vote," Chamisa said at his last campaign rally on Monday. If there is no outright winner, a run-off between the top two candidates will be held on Oct. 2.

The police have cracked down on opponents of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the incumbent, whose ZANU-PF party has governed the country since independence in 1980. Inconsistencies in voter rolls and confusion over polling sites have fueled accusations that the national electoral commission is in the party’s back pocket. Mr. Mnangagwa is poised for a big victory, they say, because he has set the country on track economically. But surveys suggest that many Zimbabweans have lost faith in their president. The clear front-runners are Mr. Mnangagwa, running in his second election, and Nelson Chamisa, who challenged Mr. Mnangagwa in 2018 and now leads a new party, Citizens Coalition for Change.

Business is booming for Zunze making colourful clothing printed with smiling faces of politicians seeking office in the presidential and parliamentary elections due on Aug. 23. Ahead of the vote, the informal clothing industry that includes tailors like Zunze is cashing in on demand from party supporters wanting to wear their party colours on their sleeves. For others, like ZANU-PF youth leader Lameck Chimanikire, the colourful outfits are not just about making a fashion statement. Since I grew up in the apostolic church, I thought of adapting the garment to tell a political message," Chimanikire said.

Mugabe’s successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa, had promised sweeping political, economic and social reforms. Several opposition activists, journalists and human rights activists have been arrested over the last year, including Job Sikhala, a Parliament member and senior official with the CCC. Obey Shava, a prominent Zimbabwean human rights lawyer who has represented various opposition party supporters facing questionable charges, was violently attacked earlier this month. Human rights group Amnesty International called it a “brutal assault on civic space.”At the same time, government corruption remains a problem in Zimbabwe. Mnangagwa has blamed Western sanctions for the current economic crisis in Zimbabwe, where the annual inflation rate reached 175% in June.

BINDURA, Zimbabwe, July 9 (Reuters) - A Zimbabwean court on Sunday upheld a ban on the planned campaign launch by main opposition party Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), the third of its rallies to be banned as its leader Nelson Chamisa face hurdles on his campaign trail. CCC was scheduled to hold its campaign launch on Sunday in Bindura, about 100 km (62 miles) north of the capital Harare, but police banned the gathering citing problems with the venue. Bindura Magistrate Mary Musika then upheld the ban, saying CCC had failed to notify the police on time. A handful of opposition supporters chanted party slogans as they protested outside the court, adding they were not free to support their party. "It is disheartening because ZANU PF is allowed to campaign freely but they are using the law to block our rallies.

CNN —Sierra Leone’s President Maada Bio has been reelected for a second term in office, the country’s electoral commission announced Tuesday. Bio’s Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) won nearly 1.6 million votes – 56.1% of the total ballots – to defeat his closest opponent, Samura Kamara of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party, who won a 41% share of the vote. Bio took an early lead on Monday, according to provisional results released by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). But the tallying of votes was fraught with controversies with international observers expressing concern about the integrity of the process. The APC party has yet to react to the final declared results.

The bull case for Dave & Buster's Entertainment remains intact, Raymond James says. Analyst Brian M. Vaccaro maintained a strong buy rating on Dave & Buster's and raised his price target, saying the restaurant and entertainment firm's presentation at its analyst day this week supported his positive view on the stock. Dave & Buster's is outperforming the broader market this year, up 30%, while the S & P 500 is 13% higher. The analyst expects some investors to take a "wait and see" approach to Dave & Buster's, given a murky economic outlook that may hurt discretionary spending. "If comps can return to positive territory, high single-digit unit growth and margin expansion should drive 10%+ EBITDA growth over the next few years," Vaccaro wrote.

NEW YORK, May 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday adopted new disclosure rules for hedge fund and private equity fund advisors aimed at increasing transparency, competition, and efficiency in the $25-trillion marketplace. The regulator also adopted a final rule to enhance the disclosures companies make around share buybacks that requires quantitative disclosure of daily repurchases on a quarterly or semi-annual basis, depending on the type of issuer. The aim of the rule is to provide investors with more information to assess the purposes and effects of share repurchases, which last year amounted to nearly $950 billion, the SEC said. "Through these disclosures, investors will be able to better assess issuer buyback programs," Gensler said. "The disclosures will also help lessen some of the information asymmetries inherent between issuers and investors in buybacks.
U.S. SEC delays vote on private investment reporting rule

March 21 (Reuters) - Wall Street's top regulator said on Tuesday it had postponed a planned vote on a proposed rule to help protect the stability of the financial system by detecting risk in the $20 trillion private asset management sector. However, an SEC spokesperson said on Tuesday that officials had decided the text of the proposal wasn't quite ready for adoption and so had removed it from the scheduled public meeting's agenda. The volume of assets under private management has more than doubled in the decade since the SEC began collecting such data, prompting fears that financial risk could build up undetected. The financial system shuddered last week with the near-collapse of the Swiss lender Credit Suisse, a bank that in 2021 lost billions that had been held by the now-defunct family office Archegos Capital Management. HARARE, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Zimbabwean police on Saturday fired teargas at an opposition party gathering in Harare and arrested 25 of its members, including two members of parliament, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) said. The arrests come after a wave of politically motivated violence against opposition supporters in rural Zimbabwe, raising fears of repression ahead of the presidential election this year. Police confirmed the arrests of members of the Citizens Coalition for Change, Zimbabwe's main opposition political party, and said a detailed statement would be released following investigations. Police allegedly fired teargas at the gathering, and beat up several opposition members before they were bundled into a police truck, she added. The opposition party, born out of the old Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), enjoys massive urban support and is seen as a threat to ZANU-PF's 43-year-old stranglehold on power.

Bourla, speaking at J.P. "They are the second highest economy in the world and I don't think that they should pay less than El Salvador," Bourla said.

This year, Russia is on track to post a record high current account surplus after its imports of goods and services fell due to Western sanctions while globally high commodity prices boosted its export revenues. Exports rather than import compression are responsible for the majority of the rise, the Institute of International Finance has said. As an oil price cap and export embargo kick in, the surplus will likely decline in 2023. That drop could put further strain on Russia's economy, already saddled with subdued consumer demand, falling disposable incomes and the impact of President Vladimir Putin's partial mobilisation order on workforce numbers. Russia's economy is doomed to see a fall in productivity, with consumption and investments also expected to drop, Nadorshin said, predicting a 5-10% economic contraction in 2023.
