Like the American federal government, Canada's national government doesn't have a lot of control over housing policy. Related storiesOverall, the federal push has already been quite successful in changing the housing policy landscape across the country, Moffat said. Over the last several years, an influx of new immigrants, rampant investor speculation, and rapidly rising construction costs have also sent prices up. It would also impose a fine on cities that tolerate "NIMBY" — the anti-development "Not in My Backyard" philosophy — opposition to housing construction. Some American fans of Canada's Housing Accelerator Fund suggest it could be a model for US efforts to incentivize denser and more abundant housing construction.

Scientists have now found evidence that a group of the winged travelers flew over 2,600 miles (about 4,200 kilometers) across the Atlantic Ocean without stopping, according to a new study published June 25 in the journal Nature Communications. The insects, which are not usually found in South America, were worn out with holes and tears in their wings. Tracking a butterflyResearchers took a few crucial steps to confirm these out-of-place butterflies really did travel across the ocean. By this method, the scientists concluded the butterflies’ birthplace to be in either Western Europe, North Africa or West Africa, she added. The researchers hope to use the same techniques to investigate the migration patterns of other species of butterflies, she added.

The fight over the future of plastics

Earlier this week in Ottawa, the Vinyl Institute, a major plastic industry group, hosted a reception for delegates who are negotiating what would be the first global treaty to tackle the world’s mounting plastic waste problem. There were cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. And signs with the message that plastics save lives. Scientists have increasingly raised the alarm over the risks that the chemicals used in plastic pose to human health and the environment. Ahead of the latest round of talks, European researchers published a database of more than 16,000 chemicals plastics can contain, many of which have been linked to cancer risks and damage to the human immune system.

Cheers thundered across a packed arena in Ottawa as fans stood and shouted support for the home team and vitriol at the visitors. When Ottawa scored to break a tie with only a few minutes to play, 8,000 fans erupted, signaling their emotional investment in the brand-new Professional Women’s Hockey League. A member of Canada’s Parliament testified on Tuesday that high school students from China were transported by bus to vote for him in a party election that is at the center of a federal inquiry into interference in Canadian elections by China and other foreign countries. Testifying during a public hearing in Ottawa, the Parliament member, Han Dong, a Chinese-Canadian politician formerly from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party, said that he had met and sought the support of the students from a private high school in 2019, but that he did not know who had chartered or paid for the bus on the day of the election. A Canadian intelligence report disclosed during the hearing said there were indications that a “known proxy agent” of the Chinese Consulate had provided the students “with falsified documents to allow them to vote” even though they did not reside in Mr. Dong’s electoral district. Noncitizens over the age of 14 can register and vote in party elections as long as they show proof they live in an electoral district.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada has sent around 70 soldiers to Jamaica to train troops from Caribbean nations who are due to take part in a U.N.-authorized mission to Haiti, the Canadian defense ministry said on Saturday. The initiative has been tied up in Kenyan court challenges ever since, effectively putting the mission on hold. The Canadian troops, from the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, will provide training on core peace-keeping skills and combat first aid, the defense ministry said in a statement. The troops are due to stay in Jamaica for an initial period of a month and will train around 330 troops from Jamaica, Belize and the Bahamas. Canada said last month it would give C$80.5 million to support the deployment of the Kenyan-led mission.

Shopify shares slid about 10% on Tuesday morning after the Canadian e-commerce company reported better-than-expected earnings for the fourth quarter but gave mixed guidance for the current period. Shopify's light first-quarter guidance overshadowed the earnings and revenue beat. The company said it expects free cash flow margin to be in the high single digits, below Wall Street's projected 13.6%. In a research note published Tuesday, Wedbush analysts highlighted that Shopify's guidance implies operating income "well below our estimates and consensus." The company's forecast implies adjusted operating income of $178 million, while consensus estimates are for $382 million, the analysts said.

Since mid-November the rebels have been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Strait of Bab al-Mandab. The Red Sea is a vital waterway that connects to the Suez Canal, through which 10% to 15% of world trade passes. In its fight, the Houthi group has distracted from Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, shored up domestic and international support, and made its name known among those who knew little to nothing about the movement, they say. That narrative has taken hold among those who oppose the Gaza war the world over. Yemen’s civil war began in 2014, when Houthi forces stormed the capital Sanaa and toppled the internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government.
