Elon Musk has a big task this week: convincing investors that Tesla is more than just a car company. It may do so once again as Elon Musk prepares to use the studio lot to tell another story: that Tesla is more than just a car company. The long-awaited event — originally scheduled for August — is meant to give weight to the electric vehicle maker's pitch that it is a tech company first and a car company second. Meanwhile, in July, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives claimed the "Tesla AI story could be worth $1 trillion-plus and is the most undervalued AI name." As market competition heated up, Tesla started cutting prices, which turned into an industrywide price war that Tesla isn't winning. It's a steep fall, considering Tesla's share of the EV market used to be as high as 80%. Critics balked, but Musk assured the Tesla community that this was the only strategy to save the company. Musk is looking for ways to buy time for Tesla — and one of those ways is to get Trump elected. Preserving Tesla's market position is imperative until he can conjure another product that people are excited to buy.

Tesla is set to report second-quarter earnings after the bell on Tuesday. Although Tesla reported vehicle deliveries of 443,956 in the second quarter, a 4.8% decline from the year-earlier period, those numbers were better than analysts had expected. But Musk and his stalwart Tesla bulls and broader fan base have ambitions for the EV maker beyond making and selling cars. In 2021, Musk also began to promise that Tesla would develop and produce humanoid robots capable of factory work, at least. Tesla "deliveries" are not an audited financial metric, but are the closest approximation to sales reported by the company.

If some industry experts are right, they could help solve a global labor shortage. Companies like Tesla, Amazon , Microsoft and Nvidia have plowed billions of dollars into what are known as "humanoid" robots. The market for humanoids is set to balloon to $38 billion in the next 20 years, according to an analysis by Goldman Sachs. The firm predicts these robots will be the next "must-have" device, not unlike smartphones or EVs. Goldman also say humanoids may be "vital for manufacturing and dangerous work, but they would also help with elderly care and fill in for labor shortages in factories."

Tightness in labor markets is boosting the use case of robotics, Morgan Stanley says, predicting a boom in humanoids — or robots in human form. "Advancements in AI are transforming the robotics industry," Morgan Stanley analysts said in a June 26 report called: "Humanoids: Investment Implications of Embodied AI." The bank forecasts a humanoid population of 40,000 by 2030, 8 million by 2040 and 63 million by 2050. Morgan Stanley is not alone in its bullish stance on humanoids. Still, Morgan Stanley outlined a number of sectors set to potentially benefit from humanoids, with social care likely to be the largest total addressable market.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed on Thursday that his company's Optimus humanoid robots could eventually make the automaker worth more than half of that. As for shareholder value, Musk said Optimus could be the catalyst for lifting Tesla's market cap to $25 trillion someday. The company, he predicted, will have "over 1,000, or a few thousand, Optimus robots working at Tesla" in 2025. Getting to a $25 trillion market cap would mean that Tesla would be worth about eight times Apple's value today.
