The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur
  + stars: | 2024-06-03 | by ( Dakin Campbell | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +45 min
On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."

One day it will be better than a real [girlfriend]. One day, the real one will be the inferior choice.” The article goes on to breathlessly outline use cases for “A.I. companions,” suggesting that some future iteration of chatbots could stand in for mental health professionals, relationship coaches or chatty co-workers. This week, OpenAI released an update to its ChatGPT chatbot, an indication that the inhuman future foretold by the Andreessen Horowitz story is fast approaching. While some observers, including the Times Opinion contributing writer Julia Angwin, who called ChatGPT’s recent update “rather routine,” weren’t particularly impressed, there’s been plenty of hype about the potential for humanlike chatbots to ameliorate emotional challenges, particularly loneliness and social isolation.

Jeff Yang CNNLike its predecessors, GPT-4o is trained on enormous quantities of data to process queries, recognize patterns and deliver helpful responses. Watching the reveal, I found myself involuntarily gasping as researchers Mark Chen and Barret Zoph showed off GPT-4o’s new chops. The freakout aspect of the reveal came from how it demonstrated that GPT-4o isn’t just a tool — it’s a tool with personality. On the one hand, having the option to interrupt your AI chatbot when it’s going astray saves time. On the other, watching dudes repeatedly talking over a female-reading chatbot made it abundantly clear why you can’t spell “mansplain” without AI.

A.I.’s ‘Her’ Era Has Arrived

A lifelike artificial intelligence with a smooth, alluring voice enchants and impresses its human users — flirting, telling jokes, fulfilling their desires and eventually winning them over. I’m summarizing the plot of the 2013 movie “Her,” in which a lonely introvert named Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is seduced by a virtual assistant named Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. voice assistant at an event in San Francisco. If you ask for a bedtime story, it can lower its voice to a whisper. If you need advice from a sassy friend, it can speak in a playful, sarcastic tone.

There's a reason social-media accounts like Best of LinkedIn, which pokes fun at over-the-top LinkedIn posts, exist. I also asked a pair of social-media managers — one at Business Insider and one at a different company — for their thoughts on LinkedIn posting.

Walmart quietly reduced its store count in 2023 even though the company was doing really well. In addition to closing underperforming stores, the retailer sold at least 79 small-format locations. Given what Walmart has planned for the next few years, the move away from smaller locations makes sense. "Walmart has always struggled with smaller stores," Saunders said. In addition to new stores, many existing locations are being upgraded to Walmart's "store of the future" concept, including 650 projects this year.

The World Economic Forum recently said generative artificial intelligence could replace 83 million jobs in the next five years within industries including tech and education under threat. Insider talked to a vice president of a data and AI platform, a hiring expert at LinkedIn, and an entrepreneur about three strategies to upskill to AI-proof your career. Karin Kimbrough, LinkedIn's chief economist, told Insider that such skills, including "management, communication, customer service, leadership, and teamwork," were more important to company leaders than AI skills . "Many bumps, turns, and forks you experience while navigating your career will become ever steeper and sharper," he wrote. She said learning how to become a "good prompter" was key to generating helpful responses from the chatbots.

There's a gap in how men and women perceive AI, a new poll found. The poll adds to a growing body of research that suggests AI will affect the jobs of men and women differently. In fact, 53% of women surveyed said they would ban their kids from using AI altogether, compared to 26% of men. Yet for this genre, a more subtle factor might be the bad, no good, extraordinarily nasty “heroes” that have entered the chat, as Amazon’s “The Boys” spinoff “Gen V” concludes its first season and the animated “Invincible” begins its second. Like “The Boys,” “Gen V” has explored the corruptible side of superheroes, with its college-age characters at the appropriately named Godolkin University (God U, for short) yearning for a place among the Seven, the amoral heroes brought to the world by a shadowy corporation more interested in public relations and profits than the public good. Lizze Broadway, Jaz Sinclair and Maddie Phillips in "Gen V," the spinoff to Amazon's "The Boys." The fact that “The Boys,” “Gen V” and “Invincible” play on Prime Video merely reinforces that streaming has created hungry platforms for genre-friendly franchises – including raunchier ones, like Max’s “Peacemaker” – while further adding to the crush of viewing options featuring characters in capes and masks. “Gen V” concludes and “Invincible” begins its second season November 3 on Amazon’s Prime Video.

Forward Air agreed to buy freight forwarder Omni Logistics. PAUL PAGE/THE WALL STREET JOURNALIn most children’s games, there are no takesies-backsies. A similar principle seems to apply when a company signs a pretty ironclad contract to buy another. Late on Tuesday, Dallas-based freight forwarder Omni Logistics said that it had filed a lawsuit against trucking company Forward Air asking for the Delaware Court of Chancery to enforce the merger agreement that both companies signed back in August. This follows a statement last week in which Forward said it might terminate the controversial acquisition, arguing that Omni—which happens to be one of its trusted suppliers—had failed to comply with merger obligations.
