CNN —The high-stakes race for House speaker enters a new phase this week, with a slate of new candidates vying for the gavel following Rep. Jim Jordan’s exit from the race. The former National Republican Congressional Committee chairman was first elected to Congress in 2014 and became majority whip earlier this year. Bergman is a member of the House Armed Services Committee where he chairs the Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee. Scott, who represents Georgia’s 8th Congressional District, serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Armed Services Committee and the House Agriculture Committee. Rep. Jim Jordan again fell short on Wednesday in his bid to become speaker, his prospects growing dimmer as time wore on. Twenty-two House Republicans voted against the Ohio Republican, as his opposition grew from a day prior, spelling trouble for his path forward in the chamber. Adding to Jordan’s troubles was a pledge by lawmakers to support Jordan in the first round as a good-faith show of support to their party’s speaker nominee – but not necessarily beyond. “This is the fight – which Jim Jordan represents – to end the status quo, and it ain’t easy,” Perry said. A group of Republicans on Wednesday were reportedly eyeing moving forward with a motion to empower Rep. Patrick McHenry, who was designated speaker pro tempore when former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted.

CNN —The House speakership drama enters a new week under increased urgency as Israel declared war Sunday following unprecedented surprise attacks by Hamas. Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster as speaker leaves the House in uncharted legal territory regarding what it can do under acting Speaker Patrick McHenry. As the Biden administration looks to provide additional assistance to Israel, officials were unsure Saturday about what could be accomplished without a sitting speaker. A source familiar with the matter said Jordan and Scalise talked Friday and they agreed it wouldn’t be wise, so the forum is now off. CNN reported Thursday the House GOP conference was scheduled to have an in-person meeting at 6 p.m. ET on Monday ahead of the GOP’s speaker candidates’ forum on Tuesday and their internal election on Wednesday. Fox News said in a press release Friday morning that Baier was holding an “exclusive joint interview” with Scalise, Jordan and Hern from the Capitol on Monday. The House is without a speaker, the person who, according to the Constitution, is required to be its leader. For as long as the House is trying to find a new speaker, it’s unable to do much of anything else. What happened to the last House speaker? Rep. CNN —The US Supreme Court on Friday put on hold the execution of Richard Glossip, an Oklahoma death row inmate whose capital conviction the state attorney general has said he could no longer support. The latest round of litigation was brought to the Supreme Court by Glossip, with the support of the Oklahoma Attorney’s General office, who asked for his May 18 execution to be set aside. The emergency hold on his execution will stay in place while the justices consider his request that they formally take up his case. Glossip has maintained his innocence, having been convicted in 1998 of capital murder for ordering the killing of his boss.
