A well in Kazakhstan leaked 140,000 tons of methane into Earth's atmosphere in 2023, scientists say. Methane is estimated to be about 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide in global warming. AdvertisementThat amount of methane is equal to emissions from 791,318 gas-powered cars being driven over a year, per the Environment Protection Agency website's calculators. They detected 115 methane emissions over the six months of the Kazakh leak, their analysis said. AdvertisementBuzachi Neft, the operator of the well, denied to the outlet that such a vast amount of methane was leaked, saying only a "negligible" amount was released.

The Swedish authorities on Wednesday closed a more than yearlong investigation into the undersea attack on the Nord Stream pipelines, citing a lack of authority to further pursue those responsible for sabotaging the critical piece of energy infrastructure intended to supply Western Europe with Russian gas. “Sweden does not have the jurisdiction to investigate this matter further,” the Swedish Security Service said in a statement on Wednesday. The series of underwater explosions ripped holes in three of the four strands of Nord Stream pipelines and led officials to conclude that they were most likely caused by a state actor. Some saw the attacks, which came close to damaging a cable supplying electricity from Sweden to Poland, as a warning that raised concern about what other infrastructure could be vulnerable. The blasts occurred in international waters but in the economic zones of Sweden and Denmark, which gave those nations a hook to investigate.

PARIS (Reuters) - Four migrants trying to cross the Channel to Britain died in French waters in the early hours of Sunday, a spokesperson for the local prefecture told Reuters. The small boat overturned as it attempted to launch from a beach, the official said, adding that one person in critical condition had been taken to hospital in Boulogne, northern France. Local newspaper La Voix du Nord said about 70 people were trying to get into a small boat and dozens were pulled from the cold water during overnight rescue efforts in Wimereux, south of Calais. Those dead are believed to be Iraqi and Syrian, La Voix du Nord said. (Reporting by Gilles Guillaume and Michel Rose; Editing by Hugh Lawson)

ROME, Dec 3 (Reuters) - European far-right parties met in Italy on Sunday vowing to reshape the European Union after next year's European Parliament elections, toughening the bloc's approach on immigration and softening its climate policies to protect jobs and industry. Parties from around a dozen countries gathered in Florence, galvanised by last month's general elections in the Netherlands, which handed a surprise win to Geert Wilders' anti-immigration Freedom Party (PVV). The far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) group is now the sixth-largest in the EU assembly, also behind liberal, green and conservative groups, but current polling data place it in fourth position. Salvini, who has failed to include in his alliance Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her poll-leading Brothers of Italy party, fronted a previous unsuccessful push in 2019 for a far-right breakthrough in EU elections. Wilders hailed Salvini, leader of the League party, as an inspiration and his "number one Italian friend."

Why doesn’t the US have more passenger trains?

Today, the United States’ passenger rail system is an echo of its former self, with swathes of the network unused or surrendered to freight. In 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Rail Passenger Service Act, which removed the requirement that private rail companies provide passenger service. Mike Segar/ReutersBut many American towns and cities have lost access to passenger trains. Can passenger trains make a comeback? Greek shippers Minerva Marine, Thenamaris and TMS Tankers have stopped transporting Russia oil in recent weeks, the four traders said. The Greek shippers' exit from the trade followed tighter U.S. sanctions imposed on Russian oil shipments. The G7 countries introduced a price cap on Russian oil in late 2022, but had not previously enforced it. Russian oil trade has brought record revenues over the past year to the shippers who took the risk and stayed in the business.

The pipelines under the Baltic Sea were damaged in explosions last year, and investigations have yet to establish who was responsible. Russia has blamed the United States, Britain, and Ukraine for the blasts which largely cut it off from the lucrative European market. The United Nations Security Council has refused to carry out its own investigation into the incident, leaving it to the governments of Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

Finland's OL3 nuclear reactor suffers unexpected outage

OSLO, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Finland's Olkiluoto 3, Europe's largest nuclear power generator as measured by output, suffered an unexpected outage on Sunday due to a turbine problem, Nordic power bourse Nord Pool said in a statement. The 1.6 gigawatt (GW) unit, known as OL3, was expected to reconnect on Monday at around 1000 GMT, an extension of the outage by 11 hours compared to the initial estimate, according to the regulatory statement. Plagued by construction delays, OL3 began regular electricity output in April this year, some 14 years behind schedule. Finland has said the nuclear reactor, Europe's first in 16 years, is expected to meet around 14% of the country's electricity demand, boosting energy security. Alfa Bank analysts valued UGC's share capital at 140.5-170.8 billion roubles ($1.53-1.86 billion). Britain imposed sanctions on 29 individuals and entities in Russia's gold and oil sectors on Wednesday, including Strukov and two of Russia's largest gold producers, Nord Gold and Highland Gold Mining, but not UGC itself. Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) also issued an alert to financial institutions, warning them about Russian attempts to use gold to evade sanctions. Strukov said the IPO would allow UGC to reach more investors, diversify the shareholder structure and lower its debt burden. A string of small offerings has breathed some life into Russia's equity capital markets in recent months.
