The victory ends a 20-year Olympic drought in the event for the USA, when Justin Gatlin won the 100-meter race in Athens. Thompson, who was the betting favorite in the race, took the silver medal and American Fred Kerley took home the bronze. But Lyles is aiming to do the opposite of cramming his listed 5-foot-10 frame and 6-foot-9 personality into a traditional box. Once Snoop Dogg had waded through electrical cords on the floor and ambled his lanky frame around the disorderly equipment in a partially constructed television studio in Paris, he was able to peer out over a balcony overlooking the Eiffel Tower and survey the city he hopes to conquer during the Olympics. “This is my home,” he said triumphantly to himself. Below, a handful of people flashed their phones. The man who NBCUniversal hopes will become the breakout star of the Paris Games was right where he wanted to be. The Olympics are always about the athletes, and as usual the focus this year will be on the brightest ones: Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Noah Lyles, Novak Djokovic, LeBron James.

CNN —For many nations — not least the US — the upcoming Paris Olympics will take place against a background of deep political and social division. If you saw any of the European Athletics Championships events last month, you may well have been struck, as I was, by just how many Black athletes featured on podiums. At the Summer Olympics, the USA team will also feature numerous Black athletes, including gymnast Simone Biles, sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and the (current) fastest man on earth, Noah Lyles. As you watch the Olympics this summer, take note of the sports in which Black people represent the USA and European countries. So no, Black athletes are not naturally better at some sports — they take the narrower opportunities open to them and work incredibly hard on their self-belief to make it to that podium.
