New York CNN —Comcast is planning to spin off most of its cable television networks, including MSNBC and CNBC, into a separate publicly traded company, according to executives with knowledge of the plan. The spinoff is expected to be formally announced on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the impending announcement on Tuesday evening, said the involved channels also include USA, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel. While observers may view the spinoff as an attempt to shed cable channels that are losing value in the streaming age, the channels still contribute strong profits to Comcast’s bottom line. The airline announced a “first-of-its-kind partnership” with Shake Shack to serve the chain’s cheeseburgers in first class on long-distance domestic flights beginning December 1 on flights out of Delta’s hub in Boston and expanding to other cities throughout 2025. In a memo sent to employees and obtained by CNN, McDonald’s is spending $35 million on marketing, which includes a value deal focused on its chicken nuggets, plus $65 million directed toward franchisees that have lost business in states where the outbreak happened. Visits and sales took a nosedive in October after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said that fresh slivered onions served on the Quarter Pounders were the likely source of an E. coli outbreak. More than 100 people got sick across 14 states and several lawsuits have been filed against the chain. McDonald’s has said recent tests showed no E. coli in its food, and in the memo noted its Quarter Pounder burgers topped with slivered onions are now back on menus nationwide.

New York CNN —Advance Auto Parts is closing more than 700 locations to shore up the company’s finances following another dismal earnings report. The car parts retailer, which has about 5,000 stores, said Thursday that the closures are part of its “strategic plan to improve business performance.” Advance Auto Parts (AAP) shares slid nearly 5% in premarket trading after it reported earnings that missed analysts’ expectations. The reduction will result in closing roughly 500 corporate-owned stores plus about 200 independently operated locations. The company did not immediately provide a full list of locations set to close. It recently sold Worldpac, an automotive parts wholesaler, for $1.5 billion as part of “simplification” of its business model.

New York CNN —Craig Melvin will become the co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show beginning early next year, following the departure of Hoda Kotb. Melvin is a familiar face to “Today” viewers, having been with the program in various roles for nearly 14 years. He is an “integral and beloved part of our family,” Libby Leist, senior vice president of Today, said in a statement. She also co-hosted the 10 am hour with Jenna Bush Hager. NBC announced said that the fourth hour will be renamed “Jenna & Friends” following Kotb’s departure until a permanent co-host is named.

Shares of Disney (DIS) are exploding higher – up 10% just after the market open Thursday. And it forecast profits from streaming will rise another $875 million in the new fiscal year, helping to lift results. Legacy media companies such as Disney that have gotten into streaming in the last five years have struggled to make the business profitable as they sought to catch up with Netflix, which had been the only profitable streaming service until recently. Disney needs to have improved results from streaming as its cable and broadcast network business continues to suffer from a combination of ad sales declines an cord cutting by consumers.

New York CNN —Shares of prominent vaccine makers plunged Thursday after President-elect Donald Trump announced his pick of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be the next secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. An hour before the market closed Thursday, as news reports of Trump’s choice began trickling out, Covid-19 vaccine maker Moderna dipped as much as 6%, and Pfizer fell almost 2%. Novavax, which created a protein-based Covid-19 vaccine, fell almost 6%. Last week, Kennedy said he would “immediately” begin studying vaccine safety and efficacy but promised to not “take vaccines away from anybody.”Other vaccine-related companies also felt the fallout. Over the past year, Pfizer stock has dipped 11%, and Moderna stock has plunged 46%.
