Robert Roberson, 57, was set to become the first person in the U.S. executed in a "shaken baby" case until members of the state House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee issued a subpoena to have him testify at a legislative hearing this week. Despite efforts by the attorney general's office to appeal, as the execution was scheduled to get underway on the evening of Oct. 17, the Texas Supreme Court, in an 11th-hour decision, sided with the lawmakers, handing Roberson a temporary reprieve. The attorney general's office also described alleged sexual abuse. However, economists at Goldman Sachs in a Monday note forecast rate cuts "notably below market pricing." CNN —Texas death row inmate Robert Roberson sat praying in a cell Thursday night, just feet from the execution chamber where he was set to die by lethal injection for the “shaken baby” death of his toddler. Just over 90 minutes before Roberson’s execution was set to begin, the House committee was able to secure a temporary restraining order against the state, pausing the execution. Roberson’s case is called into questionAdvocates for Roberson insist the diagnosis that his daughter died from shaken baby syndrome is inaccurate and has been discredited. Shaken baby syndrome is accepted as a valid diagnosis by the American Academy of Pediatrics and supported by child abuse pediatricians who spoke with CNN. Since 1992, courts in at least 17 states and the US Army have exonerated 32 people convicted in shaken baby syndrome cases, according to the National Registry of Exonerations.

The power needs of data centers will temporarily prolong the demand for coal, maintaining the reliability of the electric grid but delaying the nation's decarbonization goals, according to Moody's Ratings. The electricity demand from data centers could more than double to 35 gigawatts by 2030 compared to 17 gigawatts in 2022, according to a Moody's report published Monday. "It can be cost effective for them to supply coal to those power plants, and those power plants can, in turn, meet the incremental demand coming in from the new data centers," Sama said. The benefit to U.S. coal producers, however, will be temporary as data center developers transition to cleaner sources of power, according to Moody's. But sustained coal demand in the U.S. due to data centers could briefly lift prices before coal resumes its decline after a few years, according to Moody's.

The firm asked over 4,000 people, from baby boomers to Gen Zers, about the categories they intend to splurge on this year. Groceries ranked highest for millennials and Gen Zers, outpacing restaurants, bars, travel, beauty and personal care, apparel, and fitness. It's a notable shift from 2018 when older generations like baby boomers and Gen Xers still spent more on groceries than millennials. It surveyed baby boomers to Gen Zers, not baby boomers to Gen Xers.
