In 2006, during his first campaign for Congress, Tim Walz was scheduled to speak at a fund-raising dinner in his hometown, Mankato, Minn. At the time, he was a political unknown in a tightly contested race against a six-term incumbent. The dinner was a chance to stump in front of his local district of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and to bolster his campaign coffers. There was only one problem: Mr. Walz had laryngitis. As guests loaded up plates with food, they were surprised to see someone else take the stage: Gwen Walz, Mr. Walz’s wife. She was used to speaking in front of a crowd: Like her husband, Ms. Walz had been a public-school teacher for more than a decade.

Kevin Mohatt | ReutersSix years before Tim Walz was tapped to be Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, he was busy running for governor of Minnesota. Eric Gibson, then president of Ultra Machining Company, recalled asking Walz whether the Democrat believed that high corporate and state taxes hurt workers. Minnesota currently taxes corporate income at 9.8%. The nonpartisan Tax Foundation says that's the highest corporate tax rate of any state in the nation. Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Harris' campaign texted supporters Tuesday morning, calling Walz "a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families" and asking for donations to support the new ticket. In picking Walz, who's in his second term and also served 12 years in Congress, Harris will have as her No. Harris also appreciates how different Walz is from her in terms of the contrast he can provide, the sources said. Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign press secretary, called Walz a "West Coast wannabe" who has tried "to reshape Minnesota in the image of the Golden State."

Butch Robinson is done. After dedicating most of his 77 years to growing sod, he just wants to sell his sprawl of green and ease his aching back into the lounge chair of a hard-earned retirement. It would include shops, restaurants, tennis courts, soccer fields, a park with a pavilion — and a 40,000-square-foot mosque. So began a conflagration over a small emerald swath of the American dream, fueled by colliding hopes and mutual distrust. At the dispute’s core: clashing interpretations of what inclusion looks like.

More than in any other foreign arena, Vance has sought to echo Trump on the Ukraine war. In doing so, he emphasized the thick vein of “scarcity politics” that runs through his foreign policy, arguing that the U.S. can’t equip Ukraine with enough materiel to hold back an opponent as vast as Russia. Vance described Ukraine ceding territory to Vladimir Putin as being in “America’s best interest” while appearing more supportive than Trump of remaining in NATO. The foreign policy views of Pence, vice president when Trump was in office, while not loved by everyone, were at least “mature” — they were informed by several terms experiencing the consequences of foreign policy becoming reality, according to Daniel Kurtzer, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and now a professor at Princeton. Vance, on the other hand, brings “no foreign policy experience, certainly no expertise,” Kurtzer says, and he will fall in behind his boss when needed.

WASHINGTON — A group of Democratic senators are sounding the alarm over T-Mobile's proposal to acquire most of US Cellular, and asking the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission to closely scrutinize and consider challenging the deal. The $4.4 billion deal announced in May 2024 would allow T-Mobile to use part U.S. Cellular's wireless spectrum to improve its coverage in rural areas and give it access to four million new customers. Under the agreement, U.S. Cellular would retain 70% of its wireless spectrum and towers, leasing space on other towers to T-Mobile. In Monday's letter, the lawmakers also ask the Justice Department to consider unwinding that merger, arguing that it cost customers of competing wireless carriers billions of dollars. A spokesperson for T-Mobile did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter from CNBC.

The US issues just 140,000 employment-based visas and 85,000 H-1B visas a year. The O-1 visa has eight criteria; applicants must meet three out of eight to qualify. "A lot of it is a storytelling exercise about yourself to meet the criteria of the O-1," Wehden said. AdvertisementGabriel Petersson, a Midjourney engineer and high school dropout, initially considered an H-1B visa before realizing it required a college degree. While 85% of the company's petitions have been for O-1 visas thus far, it also supports green card applications.

Though they got a full refund, the Trovatos, who live in Surprise, Ariz., have no plans to try again. “If I live to be 125, it might be on my bucket list,” said Mr. Trovato, 79. The 6th Street Bridge in Los Angeles is wired to glow with colorful lights celebrating the city’s spirit. In St. Paul, Minn., a man was recently hit by a car and killed while crossing a street near his home where streetlights had gone out. The lights are going out across American cities, as a result of a brazen and opportunistic type of crime. Thieves have been stripping copper wire out of thousands of streetlights and selling it to scrap metal recyclers for cash. The wiring typically fetches only a few hundred dollars, but blacked-out lights pose safety hazards to drivers and pedestrians, and are costing cities millions to repair.

President Joe Biden arrives to speak to supporters and volunteers during a campaign stop at a Biden-Harris campaign election office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 7, 2024. President Joe Biden defended his place at the top of the Democratic ticket Monday in a surprise television interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," after more lawmakers and donors came forward over the weekend with concerns about his reelection bid. "I'm getting so frustrated by the elites in the party" calling on him to step down, the president fumed. Biden insisted to hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that the concerns of his wealthy backers would not dictate his political future. "I want their support, but that's not the reason I'm running," Biden said.

The House Democrats who said Biden should drop out of the 2024 race were Reps. Adam Smith of Washington, Jerry Nadler of New York, Mark Takano of California and Joe Morelle of New York. Some House Democrats in battleground districts are weighing whether to distance themselves from Biden. "President Biden is a good man & I appreciate his lifetime of service," she wrote in a post to X. During the interview, Biden dismissed the calls for him to step aside and said only the "Lord Almighty" could get him to reconsider his presidential bid. "Look, I mean, if the Lord Almighty came down and said, 'Joe, get out of the race,' I'll get out of the race," Biden said during the interview.

Federal officials will provide up to $120 million in grants to Polar Semiconductor to help the company expand its chip manufacturing facility in Minnesota, the Biden administration announced on Monday, the latest in a string of awards meant to strengthen the U.S. supply of semiconductors. Commerce Department officials said the grant would help Polar upgrade technology and double production capacity at its facility in Bloomington, Minn., within two years. The company produces chips that are critical for cars, defense systems and electrical grids, federal officials said. “We are making taxpayer dollars go as far as possible while crowding in private and state investment to create jobs, secure our supply chains and bolster manufacturing in Minnesota,” said Laurie Locascio, the under secretary of commerce for standards and technology. The law gave the Commerce Department $39 billion to distribute to companies to incentivize the construction and expansion of new plants in the United States.
