The investigation was launched in January after Israel accused some UNRWA employees of participating in the attack that left 1,200 people in Israel dead. “The evidence obtained by OIOS indicated that the UNRWA staff members may have been involved in the armed attacks of 7 October 2023,” OIOS said in a statement. Nonetheless, UNWRA in January said that it had terminated the accused employees’ contracts. They also reviewed UNRWA employees’ communications and media reports. “Because of safety concerns,” they did not meet with the accused UNRWA staff or corroborating witnesses.

CNN —Hezbollah said that it fired more than 200 missiles at Israeli military sites in retaliation for the killing of one of its senior commanders in southern Lebanon. “Together, they served as two of the most significant Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon,” the IDF said. In response to the killing, Hezbollah on Thursday said it had launched “more than 200 missiles of various types” at Israeli targets. The Israeli military said that it intercepted some of those Hezbollah missiles, as well as drones. In response to those strikes, the IDF said their fighter jets have struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

Since Israel’s founding, ultra-Orthodox Jews have been exempt from mandatory military service. Some do, but far fewer than most Israeli Jews. Technically, the military service exemption applied to young men who were actively studying at a yeshiva. In essence, the court said that the ultra-Orthodox could not be treated differently from other Israeli Jews.

CNN —The Israeli Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the government to stop funding religious schools whose students defy the country’s mandatory military service, posing one of the most serious threats to date for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition. Netanyahu relies on two Ultra-Orthodox parties – Shas and United Torah Judaism – to maintain a governing coalition. CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed the country’s military to plan for the “evacuation of the population” from Rafah, his office said in a statement on Friday, ahead of an anticipated ground assault on the southern Gaza city. More than 1.3 million people are believed to be in Rafah, the majority displaced from other parts of Gaza, according to the United Nations. But it is unclear where next they could go; the city borders Egypt to the south, but the border into the country has been closed for months. Among them are around 80 United States officials and diplomats, a source told CNN.
