After a year of uneven and disappointing post-pandemic recovery in 2023, China's consumer sentiment may finally start to improve this year. For an economy that's so heavily reliant on its manufacturing capabilities, market players are now looking toward the services and consumption sectors to propel China's growth in 2024. While a slowdown is somewhat inevitable given China's uneven economic recovery, Goldman Sachs expects services consumption to show more resilience than goods. The bounce in consumer activity, according to Goldman Sachs, will be led by leisure-related activities that include chain hotel operators, online travel agents and Macao casinos. Online gaming companies including FTG and NetEase , food delivery giant Meituan and tech giant Tencent , are also expected to get a boost.

The New Zealand dollar was last up 1.1% at a four-month high of $0.6207, having blown past resistance. The U.S. dollar, meanwhile, slid to fresh multi-month lows on the euro, yen, sterling, the Australian dollar, yuan and Swiss franc. Overnight Fed Governor Christopher Waller - an influential and previously hawkish voice at the U.S. central bank - told the American Enterprise Institute that rate cuts could begin in a matter of months, provided inflation keeps falling. Fed funds futures rallied on the remark to price more than hundred basis points of cuts in 2024 and 40% chance they begin as soon as March. Two-year Treasury yields fell sharply and along with the dollar fell further still in Asia.

A street sign for Wall Street is seen in the financial district in New York, U.S., November 8, 2021. But back in the markets, the Fed's policy pivot was all the rage as Treasury yields and dollar plunged anew. New York Fed chief John Williams said long-term inflation expectations were anchored, reassuring and "remarkably stable". Fed futures now have the first Fed rate cut of a quarter point fully priced for May and 110bps of rate cuts by year-end. Two-year Treasury yields plunged more than 15 basis points to four-month lows of 4.66% on Wednesday, with 10-year yields hitting their lowest since mid-September - a startling drop of more than 75bps in little over a month.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly fell Wednesday although a strong report on U.S. consumer confidence and hopes the Federal Reserve is finished with its aggressive interest rate hikes sent shares higher on Wall Street. Food delivery company Meituan's Hong Kong-traded shares dropped 11% after it forecast its revenue will fall in the current quarter. The loosening grip from inflation and a resilient economy have raised hopes that the Fed might finally be finished with raising its benchmark interest rate. Hopes that the Fed will keep its benchmark interest rate steady were reaffirmed Tuesday by Christopher Waller, a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors. The Fed will meet again in December to update its interest rate policy.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell below 4.3% Wednesday, a significant level when considering where it started the month—hovering above 4.8%. This comes a day after a formerly hawkish Fed official endorsed an extended pause on rate moves. Investors are also digesting Tuesday’s death of Berkshire Hathaway titan Charlie Munger . Contracts tied to the S&P 500, Dow industrials and Nasdaq-100 each ticked up modestly. The benchmark S&P 500 is on pace to end November with its best month since July 2022.

For example, China's urbanization rate in 2022 was 64%, the same as Japan's back in the 1960s, she said, noting Japan's urbanization rate in the 1990s was a much higher 77%. China is also leading in innovation based on research and development spending as a percentage of sales, the report said. Easier said than done, especially since that debt and urban development are linked to a struggling real estate sector that's accounted for about a quarter of China's economy. The U.S. Federal Reserve struck a hawkish tone at its latest meeting and Treasurys have risen to multi-year highs . According to Morgan Stanley, those conditions could put certain stocks in Asian and emerging markets at a disadvantage. "We believe large cap growth stocks, particularly the low quality and unprofitable ones, could come under pressure," they said. More specifically, those set to be "disadvantaged" are high-growth names "with low balance sheet quality" and low free cash flow yield. Chinese stocks soared Tuesday as Beijing pledged to ramp up measures to bolster China's sputtering economy. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index surged more than 3%, China's tech-heavy ChiNext rose 1.8% and the Shanghai Composite Index increased 1.81% on Tuesday morning in Asia. The stock rebound comes after China's top leaders pledged on Monday to ramp up policy support to boost domestic consumption as the post Covid rebound has been slower than expected. That's mainly due to weak domestic demand, operational challenges for companies as well as "a grim and complex external environment," it said. The gathering comes at a time when global investors and banks are warning that confidence is waning in China's economic outlook. Such a meeting, with a clear agenda to discuss challenges facing global fund managers investing in China, is rare, the three sources said, and reflected Beijing's keenness to shore up confidence among foreign investors. Weighed down by strict COVID measures, China's economy grew just 3% in 2022, one of its worst showings in decades. The meeting is organized by China's fund regulator Asset Management Association of China (AMAC). U.S. dollar-denominated fundraising by China-focused venture capital and PE firms this year also had its weakest first half year in the past decade, data from industry tracker Preqin showed.
