The last two races of the Paris Games were a gold rush for the U.S., with both the women and men dominating the 4x400-meter relays Saturday. A three-time gold medalist after wins in the 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay, Thomas helped widen the gap in the third lap that McLaughlin-Levrone created in the second. In the last lap, it came down to a race between two gold medalists: Benjamin and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo. With the victory, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson — who ran earlier in the week for the U.S. but not in the final — is now the youngest Olympic track-and-field gold medalist ever. He is also the youngest male U.S. Olympic gold medalist in any sport since 1952.

The U.S. women’s 4×400 relay team, the final track event at an epic Olympics, blazed to the gold medal with a time of 3:15.27. Shamier Little, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas and Alexis Holmes put together a dominant performance illustrative of American track and field’s dominance in the 33rd Olympiad. It doubled the gold medal count from the Tokyo Games when it took home 26 total medals. Thomas won her third gold medal of these games: one in the 200-meter hurdles, and two as the third leg in both relays. McLaughlin-Levrone secured her second gold medal, joining Thomas and Rai Benjamin as the Americans in track and field with multiple golds.

New York CNN —Google has pulled its controversial Olympics ad after critics blasted it for portraying what they called a bleak application of artificial intelligence. The ad showed a father using Google’s Gemini AI chatbot to help his daughter write a fan letter to US Olympic track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. But many online questioned why Google would want to replace a child’s creativity with words written by a computer. Google initially defended the ad, which ran during breaks from the Olympics, saying it showed how Gemini could provide a “starting point” for a piece of writing. “While the ad tested well before airing, given the feedback, we have decided to phase the ad out of our Olympics rotation,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

Well, a new Google ad says artificial intelligence can now do that for you. It shows the young girl training to compete like her hero, thanks to hurdling technique tips generated by Google’s AI search feature. But many early AI tools seem to do the opposite, instead enabling computers to generate traditionally human creative outputs such as art, music and stories. And yet tech firms have forged ahead with rolling out AI tools that can create new emojis, speak and even generate videos. Google did not respond to CNN’s request for comment regarding the backlash to the Gemini ad.

NBC is upping its celebrity presence for its Olympic coverage in Paris, headlined by Snoop Dogg. “Research shows that it is a challenge to keep viewers after 10 p.m. ET,” NBC Olympics producer Rob Hyland said. NBCUniversal owns the U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2032, so Paris (2024), Milan-Cortina (2026), Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane (2032).

CNN —Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke the 400-meter hurdles world record for the fifth time on Sunday, clocking 50.65 seconds at the US Olympic Trials. Running in lane five, McLaughlin-Levrone was leading the race by the 250-meter mark and had opened up a huge lead as she raced down the home straight. “I would love to dip under 50 at some point,” said McLaughlin-Levrone. In the men’s event, Rai Benjamin set a trials record of 46.46 as he looks to upgrade the silver medal he won behind Norwegian Karsten Warholm at the Tokyo Olympics. Shares of BuzzFeed gained about 20% on Wednesday after a securities filing revealed that Ramaswamy has acquired a 7.7% stake in the company. Ramaswamy “believes the securities of the Issuer are undervalued and represent an attractive investment opportunity,” the filing. BuzzFeed’s portfolio of brands includes HuffPost, Tasty and the First We Feast brand that houses its “Hot Ones” YouTube series.
