We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. That reference to Election Day is perhaps the only line in Trump’s speech that President Joe Biden would agree with. In another America, they would be collegial members of the Presidents Club, bonding over memories of how they overcame their thorniest challenges. “Biden sounded like he’s ready to go toe to toe with former President Donald Trump and win in November. Paul Sracic noted that Biden lost White voters without college degrees by 35 points in 2020.

How a father can affect a sonSo many people now know that Jason Kelce is an all-pro center who had an illustrious 13-year career. But now as a father myself, I understand it in the same way that Jason understands a father’s support. The US said the attack lasted 30 minutes, hitting 85 targets across seven locations in Iraq and Syria. In 2016, the Iraqi parliament passed a bill recognizing the PMU as a government entity operating alongside the Iraqi military. A screengrab from a video, geolocated by CNN to the town of Qaim, Iraq, shows the aftermath of US military strikes in the area, according to the Iraqi Military. Iraq and Syria condemned the US attack as infringements on their sovereignty that risk fueling regional conflict. “The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world,” Biden said in a statement Friday, following the strikes on Iraq and Syria.

Hunter Biden Seeking Trump, Barr Documents in Gun Case

Hunter Biden arrived for a court appearance last month in Wilmington, Del. Photo: Matt Rourke/Associated PressPresident Biden’s son, Hunter Biden , is seeking to subpoena Donald Trump and former Attorney General William Barr as he prepares to raise a defense that his prosecution on felony gun charges stems from an “unrelenting pressure campaign” by the former president and his Republican allies. In a 16-page court filing Wednesday, the younger Biden asked a federal judge to sign off on subpoenas for communications among Trump administration officials about investigating and prosecuting him. His lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said the information he is pursuing “goes to the heart of his defense that this is, possibly, a vindictive or selective prosecution arising from an unrelenting pressure campaign beginning in the last administration.”

Biden will join the striking United Auto Workers on the picket line — a first for any president. Trump, like Biden, will also head to Detroit and hold an event to garner support for his 2024 run. Many unions have endorsed Biden but blue-collar workers are split on who they're voting for. As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Iowa Democrats find themselves at a crossroads. Iowa Democrats have watched Republicans dominate in a slate of competitive contests in recent years. Former Iowa state Sen. Rita Hart, who lost a close congressional race in 2020, now leads the state's Democratic Party. Celsi pointed to the Democratic minority's inability to curtail the conservative agenda of the GOP legislature and the diminished importance of Iowa in the Democratic presidential nominating process. Last year, Democratic Senate nominees in the six most competitive races outraised their GOP counterparts by $288 million, per Politico. The US Environmental Protection Agency just released a proposal for enforceable standards for six PFAS compounds in drinking water. The new EPA proposal would set the threshold for those two substances at 4 nanograms per liter of drinking water. It also proposes a "hazard index" to set a limit on the combined quantity of four other PFAS in drinking water: PFNA, GenX, PFBS, and PFHxS. Communities across the US have especially high PFAS contamination in their drinking water, often due to a nearby industrial or military facility. "You can't just regulate in drinking water, without addressing the other side," Sunderland said, adding that you have to "turn off the source."
Animals, birds, and fish across the planet are contaminated with forever chemicals, a new report found. Though they're useful for resisting water, heat, and stains, PFAS do not break down in the environment, earning them the "forever chemicals" nickname. The new report suggests that contamination from forever chemicals may pose yet another threat to many species' survival. Cleaning up these emission sites is key to stopping more forever chemicals from building in the environment. "It will take regulatory action to move the entire market and country away from dependence on these chemicals," Andrews said.

Payroll growth decelerated in December but was still better than expected, a sign that the labor market remains strong even as the Federal Reserve tries to slow economic growth. The job growth marked a small decrease from the 256,000 gain in November, which was revised down 7,000 from the initial estimate. Stock market futures rose following the release as investors look for signs that the jobs market is cooling and taking inflation lower as well. The relative strength in job growth comes despite repeated efforts by the Fed to slow the economy, the labor market in particular. The headline unemployment rate is tied for the lowest since 1969.
STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Bryan Christopher Kohberger, the suspect in the brutal slayings of four University of Idaho students in November, waived extradition Tuesday during a court hearing in Pennsylvania, paving the way for him to face murder charges in Idaho. While in court Tuesday afternoon, Kohberger said he understood what it meant to waive extradition. During the brief hearing, a member of Kohberger's family appeared to be crying. A probable cause affidavit, with details supporting Kohberger’s arrest, is under seal until he sets foot in Idaho and is served with the papers in court, authorities said. Families of the victims say they are hopeful that Kohberger’s arrest will bring justice.
