Not exactly what you want to see if you're an investor putting new money to work within Tech," he wrote. The SMH closed Friday at $252.96, and the strategist expects the $233 level to be tested near term. "We still exercise some degree of caution when we view Technology stocks, as short term trends and near-term momentum appear to be stalling," O'Hara wrote.

But there are some weak points — like a growing federal debt load. There are a few less-rosy data points out there, like rising long-term unemployment and a historically high level of federal debt. Federal debt is high compared to GDP, even looking beyond the spike of the debt as a share of GDP during the pandemic. While federal debt as a share of GDP was slightly above 100% before the pandemic, recent figures are much higher than in the past. Federal debt was 120% of GDP in the second quarter of this year.

The S & P 500 returned 13% annually the last 10 years, above the long-term average of 11%, according to Goldman. Goldman's bearish long-term forecast comes just as the S & P 500 has entered the third year of a bull market, garnering a 27% annual total return the last two years. "The current high level of equity valuations is a key reason our 10-year forward return forecast sits at the lower end of the historical distribution," stated the note. The firm said the equal-weight S & P 500 would produce higher returns than the regular benchmark because of the concentration risk. The professional cohort had piled into beaten-down stocks last month, stirred by hopes of more government assistance for the troubled China economy. "Indeed, the only part of the Chinese economy that appeared to be holding was its export sector. Investor sentiment toward Chinese stocks was partly aided by high-profile hedge fund manager David Tepper of Appaloosa Management, who turned extremely bullish. Contradictory messages about inflation and the labor market have investors on guard. Price growth is slowly falling from its peak, but it exceeded expectations in September after a hot reading in August. AdvertisementInflation is a threat that won't sink the economyWhile there's plenty of economic data to get excited about, persistent price growth is a problem. "If we're going to be data dependent, we have to at least look at the data," Sosnick said. Higher-than-hoped inflation is rarely compatible with an economic downturn, so if price growth does persist, it likely won't be in an earnings-crushing contraction.
