If you like your European midweek football this is the week for you, with 54 Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches being crammed into three nights. The Champions League kicked things off with some of the competition’s favourites beginning to bare their teeth. It was also, incredibly, their 31st defeat from 37 Champions League group stage away games. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and a first Champions League goal for James McAtee saw City get their first win of this year’s competition. They lost a number of key players in the summer and can’t even play Champions League games at their own home, with the 15,000 capacity Stade Francis-Le Ble not up to Champions League standards (they’re hosting matches at Guingamp’s Stade du Roudourou instead).

United fell to a third league defeat in six games on Sunday, losing 3-0 at home against Tottenham amid captain Bruno Fernandes’ red card. Four other players have scored four goals in the same half of a Premier League match, but the 22-year-old Palmer is the first to achieve the feat in the opening 45 minutes. Later in the second half, Palmer almost got a fifth when he was one-on-one with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, though he put his shot wide. But any likelihood of the visiting side, unbeaten in the Premier League prior to the game, building on the early lead were quickly shut out by Palmer’s brilliance. Protesters demonstrate outside the Labour Party conference venue in Liverpool against the withdrawal of the winter fuel allowance, on September 23, 2024. “It has felt a bit blunt,” a Labour Member of Parliament admitted after Starmer’s speech Tuesday, summing up the sentiment across much of conference. Unfortunately, the realities of governing are beginning to bite the Labour Party – and it is likely he will need to show some returns far sooner. Starmer’s speech was was light on fresh content but a heckler was calmly removed and the key messages were confidently delivered. But a premiership can only survive on doom and gloom for so long, and patience is already wearing thin among much of the wider party.

Two people were stabbed in London’s Leicester Square, a tourist hot spot, on Monday, the police said. The victims, an 11-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman, were taken to a hospital, Westminster police said in a post on social media. In a later update, the police said that the girl would require hospital treatment but that her injuries were not life threatening and that the woman suffered more minor injuries. The episode came exactly two weeks after a deadly knife attack in Southport, near Liverpool, that led to the death of three young girls and injured eight other children and two adults. In the days after the stabbings in Southport, false information about the identity of the attacker, including that he was an undocumented migrant, spread rapidly online and ignited a series of violent riots around Britain.
