Israel carried out a series of precision strikes on military targets in Iran late last month. AdvertisementIran is signaling that it will deliver a harsh response to Israel's late-October strikes, which were revenge for Tehran's retaliatory ballistic missile attack at the start of the month. However, another direct Iranian attack on Israel — which would be its third ever — invites additional Israeli strikes at a time when Tehran is dangerously unprepared. Israel struck several S-300s, a Russian-made surface-to-air missile system considered to be the most advanced air-defense battery that Iran operates. He said last week that the strikes on Iran's air-defense network create "a huge disadvantage for the enemy when we will want to strike later."

Voting systems: How we know the election is secure

Musk has used X to spread unfounded allegations about voting systems, laying groundwork to question the election before it happens. To better understand the security of US voting systems and why there’s no indication that they’re not secure, I talked to CNN’s Zachary Cohen, who covers national security, and Sean Lyngaas, who covers cybersecurity. There are three large election equipment vendors in the US: Dominion; ES&S, or Election Systems and Software; and Hart InterCivic. Dominion Voting Systems ballot-counting machines are lined up at a Torrance County warehouse during testing of election equipment with local candidates and partisan officers in Estancia, New Mexico, on September 29, 2022. COHEN: We know people, these pro-Trump operatives and lawyers, have already gotten access to election software – voting software, voting systems in Georgia, copied the entire election database from several counties.

An outperforming fund manager who previously sold Meta Platforms shares over concerns about the company's virtual reality investments is now bullish on the technology giant's artificial intelligence strategy. This optimistic stance marks a significant shift for Yiu, who revealed that his fund had previously sold out of Meta Platform shares two years ago due to concerns about the company's virtual reality investments. Meta's Reality Labs division, home to the company's virtual reality technologies and projects, took on $13.72 billion in losses in 2022 before Zuckerberg pivoted strategy. Meta is among the top 10 holdings in Yiu's Blue Whale Growth Fund, which itself is up 16.6% in 2024. Yiu's endorsement comes as Meta faces scrutiny over its ambitious AI spending plans, prompting mixed reactions from Wall Street analysts.

The pro-crypto and bi-partisan super PAC Fairshake said Monday that the committee and its affiliates have raised $78 million for the 2026 midterm elections. That $78 million includes more than $30 million raised, plus another $48 million in new commitments from centralized crypto exchange Coinbase and Silicon Valley venture fund Andreessen Horowitz, among other companies. All in, a16z has given $70 million to Fairshake as the VC looks to support the PAC's larger mission of building a Congress comprised of pro-crypto legislators. Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, was sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission over claims that it engaged in unregistered sales of securities. Top Wall Street lenders have created a big debt market back by red-hot Nvidia GPUs. A report from the FT says firms have made billions in loans to companies that use Nvidia chips as collateral. AdvertisementTop Wall Street firms have loaned billions to a handful of tech companies that have used Nvidia's artificial intelligence-enabling GPUs as collateral, The Finanacial Times reported. According to the FT, big financial institutions including BlackRock, Blackstone, Pimco, and Carlyle, have made over $11 billion in loans to "neocloud" companies, tech companies that provide cloud services to other tech firms building AI products. There are concerns, though, over the value of Nvidia's GPUs, with the price of existing AI chips potentially coming down as more advanced models are released and as companies potentially dial back AI spending.

Hong Kong CNN —China appears to have built a new and unusual aircraft carrier, intriguing experts with a potentially first-of-its-kind vessel that could further increase Beijing’s rapidly expanding maritime power. This potential new aircraft carrier “is of a somewhat unusual shape and size – much smaller than China’s previous naval aircraft carriers,” said Thomas Shugart, a former US Navy submarine commander and now a fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Another view of the satellite imagery captured on October 23, 2024, showing a potentially new class of a Chinese aircraft carrier at a shipyard in the southeastern end of the country. Only the United States Navy operates aircraft carriers bigger than the Fujian. Conducted in the South China Sea, the exercise was “aiming to enhance the integrated combat capability of the aircraft carrier formations” and was “part of the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation’s regular real-combat training in the high seas,” Xinhua said.

CNN —Giving birth to triplets, quadruplets or even more has become increasingly less common in the United States. It’s not just guidance around embryo transfers that has changed in the past decades, possibly leading to declines in triplets and higher-order births. Satellite imagery suggests that Israeli’s attack on Iran appears to have damaged a key element of Tehran’s ballistic missile production and air defense sites, potentially leaving it exposed to any future attacks, military analysts told NBC News. Israel appears to have targeted Iran’s missile production process instead of storage sites — thereby making it harder for Tehran to add to an already dwindling supply of missiles. “It was a very smart attack, targeting all the sensitive sites,” Hinz said in an interview. "The missiles are dispersed all over the country, some of them are deep inside Iran and deep underground. "But when you hit the missile production facilities, you can't produce them anymore."
