March 6 (Reuters) - Shares of cryptocurrency-related companies fell in premarket trading on Monday after Silvergate Capital Corp (SI.N) pulled the plug on its crypto payments network, following its doubts about keeping its business viable. The digital assets-focused bank said late on Friday that effective immediately it had made a "risk-based decision" to discontinue the Silvergate Exchange Network (SEN). Shares of the La Jolla, California-based bank were down more than 4% in premarket trading, while crypto lending peer Signature Bank (SBNY.O) fell 3%. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global (COIN.O) and BTC mining machine maker Ebang International were both down about 1% each. March 3 (Reuters) - Global ratings agency Moody's downgraded Silvergate Capital Corp's (SI.N) deposit rating to 'Caa1' from 'Ba3' on Friday, after the crypto-focused bank raised going concern doubts earlier this week. Cryptocurrency heavyweights including Coinbase Global Inc (COIN.O) and Galaxy Digital have subsequently dropped Silvergate as their banking partner. Moody's said the Silvergate rating change reflects its "expectation that the company will continue to experience further declines in deposits, forcing it to continue selling securities, potentially at further losses." The bank's ratings were also placed on review for downgrade, Moody's said. Reporting by Eva Mathews in Bengaluru; Editing by Shinjini GanguliOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
March 2 (Reuters) - Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global Inc (COIN.O) said on Thursday it was no longer accepting or initiating payments to or from Silvergate Capital Corp (SI.N) after the lender warned it was evaluating its ability to operate as a going concern. Shares of Silvergate extended their losses after the announcement from Coinbase. The exchange also said it had minimal exposure to Silvergate. It was also evaluating the impact of these events on "its ability to continue as a going concern," it said. La Jolla, California-based Silvergate reported a $1 billion loss for the fourth quarter as investors raced to withdraw deposits in the wake of crypto exchange FTX's bankruptcy.

Jan 31 (Reuters) - U.S. senators have asked cryptocurrency-focused bank Silvergate Capital Corp (SI.N) if it knew about bankrupt exchange FTX's alleged misuse of customer funds after the lawmakers found the company's earlier responses "evasive", Bloomberg Law reported on Tuesday. The questions were asked in a letter sent to the bank by senators including Democrat Elizabeth Warren and Republicans Roger Marshall and John Kennedy, who questioned Silvergate about its ties to FTX, the report said. They said Silvergate in December had declined to fully answer related questions, citing restrictions on disclosing "confidential supervisory information", the report added. Earlier this month, Silvergate slashed its headcount by 40% and reported a net loss of $1 billion for the fourth quarter. The company sold $5.2 billion of debt securities at a loss of $718 million in the fourth quarter to maintain liquidity. The bank said it would take an impairment charge of $196 million in the fourth quarter on assets purchased for the payment solution venture. Founded in 1988, Silvergate ventured into crypto in 2013. Company filings show that the bank received $4.3 billion in advances from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco in the fourth quarter.
The US is considering testing airline wastewater for COVID-19 to track the virus. Wastewater tests showed the presence of COVID-19 variants up to two weeks before people tested positive using nasal swabs. Three infectious disease experts told Reuters that testing wastewater collected on airplanes would be more effective at tracking the virus than testing travelers on entry. According to the South China Morning Post, the Malaysian government has announced that they will start screening toilet water on flights from China to track the virus. They will not, however, be testing travelers upon arrival to Malaysia.

The United States this week also expanded its voluntary genomic sequencing program at airports, adding Seattle and Los Angeles to the program. "Previous Covid-19 wastewater surveillance has shown to be a valuable tool and airplane wastewater surveillance could potentially be an option," she wrote. French researchers reported in July that airplane wastewater tests showed requiring negative Covid tests before international flights does not protect countries from the spread of new variants. They found the omicron variant in wastewater from two commercial airplanes that flew from Ethiopia to France in December 2021 even though passengers had been required to take Covid tests before boarding. Osterholm and others said mandatory testing before travel to the United States is unlikely to keep new variants out of the country.

Atlanta lawmakers want short-term rentals to be licensed and to fine owners who violate city laws. In some cities, government officials are trying to regulate the number of short-term rentals that investors can purchase. The debate over short-term rentals in Atlanta is emblematic of similar debates in other cities. For instance, voters in Colorado towns like Dillon, Aspen, and Steamboat Springs this year approved measures to tax short-term rentals to help regular homebuyers afford homes. There are more than 1,300 short-term rentals in Joshua Tree, according to AirDNA, compared with a population of 7,700.
3 traders tell what drew them to FTX and how they now have money stuck inside it. Wintermute, a large crypto trading firm, stopped trading on FTX, but still had some funds stuck on the US exchange, CoinDesk reported. The three traders who spoke to Insider all acknowledged having some amount of money stuck inside FTX, despite some pretty sophisticated risk management strategies. FTX's collapse was precipitated when FTX sent billions of dollars to Alameda to cover losses, The Wall Street Journal reported. Bankman-Fried may now face charges for wire fraud, the Wall Street Journal reported this week after talking with securities lawyers about how the US laws might apply.
The following describes the new coronavirus subvariants and how they may impact people. WHAT ARE BQ.1 AND BQ.1.1? In early July, BA.5 became the dominant subvariant of the coronavirus circulating in the United States, but in October it started giving way to BQ.1 and BQ.1.1. A study of blood from three dozen adults showed the shot increased neutralizing antibodies against the BA.4/BA.5 Omicron subvariants by fourfold compared with the original shot after one month. read moreIt is not yet clear whether that will translate into higher protection against the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 subvariants, but their close relationship to BA.5 may work in the booster's favor.
La Jolla , Calif.Alexis Smith is not quite a feminist artist, not quite a conceptualist, not quite an installation artist, not always an ironist, and in the beginning she wasn’t even Alexis Smith. In her art, however, Ms. Smith is at times all of those things. Collage—intimate and mural-sized—is her metier, and her sensibility is more literary than plastic. One could easily get the idea from the 50 works on view in “Alexis Smith: The American Way” at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla that the artist has read most of the Great Books of the Western World and seen almost every movie and stage musical ever made. This is slyly accomplished by—to describe a typical Smith collage—a small pictorial souvenir from popular culture coupled with a few typewritten words from, for example, a Raymond Chandler L.A. detective novel.
An FBI SWAT team caught the fugitive, Justin Costello, in a remote area near San Diego on Oct. 4. He was carrying a backpack loaded with six one-ounce gold bars worth $12,000, U.S. currency worth $60,000, another $10,000 in Mexican pesos and banking cards and checkbooks, prosecutors said in a court filing. Cash and gold bars as detailed in court filing in US District court in San Diego in case of former fugitive Justin Costello. Instead, he "became a fugitive," prosecutors wrote. When agents arrested him, Costello "stated he was surprised agents had found him because he turned his phone off."
