Ordering delivery has gotten wildly expensive
  + stars: | 2024-09-07 | by ( Alex Bitter | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +5 min
AdvertisementThe premium that diners pay to have their food delivered can be hefty. That might make delivery seem like an obvious place for consumers to cut back their spending these days. DoorDash customers have continued ordering food — and, increasingly, groceries and other products — from the service, Xu said. He and his wife still have Thai food delivered, for instance, when they have friends over in the evenings and don't want to interrupt socializing with a trip to pick up dinner. Reuters —Cruise will offer its autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform starting next year, the companies said on Thursday, as the General Motors-backed robotaxi firm attempts a comeback. The multi-year partnership will allow Uber riders to choose a trip using a Cruise autonomous vehicle, they said. Uber’s partnership with Cruise comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to unveil its delayed plans for a robotaxi product in October amid slowing demand for electric vehicles. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been tougher than expected and taken longer than promised due to complex technology, soaring investments, tight regulatory scrutiny and federal investigations. Trips by self-driving vehicles on Uber’s platform rose six-fold in the June quarter year-on-year, helped by partnerships with companies including Waymo, as well as startup Waabi for freight services.

Lyft calls surge pricing "Primetime," and CEO David Risher admitted on an earnings call on Wednesday that it has a bad reputation among customers. While surge pricing isn't ending, Risher said Price Lock "can chip away at how often it occurs" and give riders "a reason to choose Lyft." The artificial intelligence revolution is just getting started, and that means there are opportunities for investors to scoop up some names at a discount, according to Evercore ISI. Yet adoption is low, with less than 5% of U.S. firms reporting using AI, he said, citing U.S. Census Bureau data. To find "AI revolutionaries" that are trading at a discount, Evercore ISI looked for companies in the Russell 1000 with strongly trending AI mentions — either surpassing the index or the company's sector average. One of the names on the list is Uber Technologies , which mentioned AI 17 times last year. The company is also using AI to increase productivity.
