PARIS – Barring any last-minute setbacks, Kevin Durant will make his 2024 debut with Team USA versus Serbia in their first game of the Paris Olympics after he missed the entire exhibition campaign with a calf strain, coach Steve Kerr said. When asked if he expected Durant to play Sunday, Kerr said “hopefully” — referring to the perennial All-Star making it through Saturday’s practice with no trouble. He ramped up his practices after the U.S. made it to France with a team practice Wednesday in Lille and a scrimmage Thursday in a Parisian suburb. GO DEEPER For Team USA, a Kevin Durant-Steph Curry reunion brings hope of a needed joltDurant is the most prolific scorer in U.S. men’s history. London, England CNN —The US men’s basketball team fought back from a double-digit deficit to edge past South Sudan 101-100 in a dramatic pre-Olympic friendly in London, England on Saturday. Despite its star power, Team USA has occasionally flattered to deceive recently and has looked unconvincing at times in victory. South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, is preparing to make its Olympic debut and defeated Great Britain in a friendly game on Thursday. South Sudan fought its way back into the game, catching fire from three-point range in the first quarter to grab the lead. “Don’t take nothing away from South Sudan,” he said.

CNN —The USA Basketball Men’s National Team survived a late Australia fightback in an underwhelming 98-92 victory in an Olympic warmup game on Monday. But when Australia missed chances to reduce the deficit further, back-to-back three-pointers from Tyrese Haliburton sealed the USA win. Not that it’s often mattered, though, with Team USA winning seven of the eight men’s basketball gold medals on offer since professionals were able to participate for the first time at Barcelona 1992. “We stopped playing mid third quarter and started turning the ball over,” Team USA coach Steve Kerr said, per the NBA. CNN —Soccer star Sam Kerr has signed a new contract with current Women’s Super League (WSL) champion Chelsea, the club announced Thursday, but not before giving her fans a minor scare. According to BBC Sport, it was Kerr’s idea to tease the fans around the news of the contract extension. Kerr has become one of the best players in women's soccer. Former Chelsea manager Hayes had made it her mission to convince Kerr to move to the WSL club back in 2019. Sonia Bompastor’s recent arrival as the new Chelsea manager marks a new era in west London, but retaining Kerr will help steady the ship.

But much more must be done and, as with most change, it’s important to start by admitting there’s a problem. The phenomenon of Democrats dismissing the polls in favor of misplaced optimism has been termed “hopium” by data journalist Nate Silver. Polling denial is not unanimous in the party, as many Democrats are reportedly in a full-blown “freakout” over Biden’s chances. It’s essential they admit the polling is correct, because if Biden is winning, there is little need to change course. This means these groups likely share top concerns with moderate voters generally.

The SEC has approved a rule change Thursday that would pave the way for ETFs that buy and hold ether , one of the world's largest cryptocurrencies. The decision comes less than six months after the Securities and Exchange Commission approved bitcoin ETFs. Many of the companies that sponsor bitcoin ETFs — including BlackRock, Bitwise and Galaxy Digital — have also started the process of the launching an ether fund. Specifically, the SEC's order approves applications from various exchanges to list eight different ether funds. Melbourne —Australia have confirmed talismanic captain Sam Kerr will miss the women’s Olympic soccer at the Paris Games while recovering from a serious knee injury. The Chelsea striker suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury at a training camp in Morocco in January and her participation in Paris was highly doubtful. Football Australia (FA) ended the speculation on Tuesday in a squad announcement for Australia’s two-match home series against China which starts in Adelaide on May 31. “Attacker Amy Sayer (ACL) and forward Sam Kerr (ACL) remain on the sidelines with long term injuries,” FA said. “(They) most likely will be physically available to be part of an Olympic roster,” Gustavsson said of Gorry and Luik.

CNN —House Speaker Mike Johnson is moving forward with a legislative package to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been beating the drums to vote Johnson, who is himself also an extreme right-wing Republican, out of office. When GOP House members adopted this lower threshold in exchange for accepting McCarthy, experts understood that the rule would create extreme instability within the Republican caucus. On July 28, 2015, Tea Party Republican Rep. Mark Meadows from North Carolina filed a motion to vacate but the House never voted on the resolution. The time of Republican speakership keeps shrinking as right-wing ousters have become increasingly common.
