CNN —House Republicans were shocked by some of the recent high-profile retirements announced by their colleagues, which have included powerful committee chairs and rising stars inside the GOP. And on the Energy and Commerce Committee alone – a highly sought-after assignment – there are eight Republicans who are retiring. “So, yeah, I’m very worried about it.”Others, however, said the turnover is completely normal, especially since the House GOP has self-imposed term limits for chairs, which they argued allows them to inject new blood into the ranks. We probably need a few more retirements.”McCarthy – who resigned at the end of last year – suggested that was perhaps the goal of hard-liners like Good and GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida who voted to oust him. It’s just a number of things piling up,” said House Science Committee Chair Frank Lucas, reflecting on the retirements.

Special counsel David Weiss blew through one of the key pieces of evidence House Republicans have held against Biden. AdvertisementA stunning indictment has undermined one of the key pieces of evidence some GOP lawmakers have cited in their impeachment push against President Joe Biden. Top House Republicans have cited the previously unknown informant's allegations for months as evidence for their views about the "Biden crime family." Some Republicans were already warning that their Biden impeachment push was going nowhere even before the latest setbacks. The outlet reported that roughly 20 Republicans were not convinced there was sufficient evidence to impeach Biden.

CNN —Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Friday defended his record on the border, saying his impeachment by House Republicans has no basis in fact or law and he has no plans to slow down his work. Of course,” Mayorkas told Amanpour. As a member of the administration’s delegation to the conference, Mayorkas rebuffed the idea that Tuesday’s impeachment had compromised his standing with world leaders. The three Republicans who voted to oppose Mayorkas' impeachment have each warned about establishing a new precedent for the action some lawmakers place only below authorizing a war. Still, the vote to impeach Trump for inciting the Capitol riot was the most bipartisan presidential impeachment vote in history. As The New York Times pointed out during Trump's first impeachment, one out of every four presidents have had articles of impeachment written up against them. Gallagher announced his decision just days after bucking his party on the first vote to impeach Mayorkas.

House Republicans rammed through the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. AdvertisementHouse Republicans on Tuesday rammed through the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, marking a historic moment exactly a week after an embarrassing failure. Three Republicans, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California, and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, joined House Democrats in voting against the measure. The last time Congress impeached a Cabinet secretary was in 1876 when lawmakers impeached former Secretary of War William W. Belknap. Biden has emphasized how the White House tried to strike a bipartisan border-Ukraine deal only for former President Donald Trump and House Republicans to nuke the agreement shortly after its public announcement.

After coming up short last week, House Republicans are set to hold a new impeachment vote Tuesday. “Well, the Constitution hasn’t changed since last week, so my vote is not going to change,” the congressman said. "Mayorkas is guilty of maladministration on a cosmic scale, but that's not grounds for impeachment," McClintock told NewsNation. Despite the high-stakes nature of the vote, McClintock told NewsNation that House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana didn't "pressure" him when they spoke about the vote. Last week, the Mayorkas impeachment vote failed 214-216, with McClintock and GOP Reps. Ken Buck of Colorado, Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, and Blake Moore of Utah voting against the secretary's impeachment.

The House of Representatives, by an extremely narrow margin, voted Tuesday to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached in almost 150 years. The Department of Homeland Security said that House Republicans “will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution” following the vote to impeach. “Secretary Mayorkas and the Department of Homeland Security will continue working every day to keep Americans safe,” the statement said. Ken Buck, Tom McClintock, and Mike Gallagher are three House Republicans who voted against impeaching Mayorkas. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas holds a press conference at a U.S. Border Patrol station on January 08, 2024 in Eagle Pass, Texas. House Republicans are preparing to take another stab at impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, a week after the same effort failed in an embarrassment for Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. This time around, Republicans are confident they will have the majority vote to impeach now that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., has returned to Washington after cancer treatment, which prevented him from breaking last week's 215-215 tie. If Republicans eke out a majority vote against Mayorkas, he would become only the second cabinet member in U.S. history to be impeached. The White House has supported Mayorkas, condemning the impeachment effort as a political distraction by Republicans, who refused $20 billion of border security funding in a bipartisan Senate deal last week.

In a matter of minutes, Republicans failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. For days after gaining the majority, the GOP was unable to secure enough votes to make Kevin McCarthy House speaker. Between those two events, House GOP leaders lost control of the floor multiple times. Fourteen Republicans joined House Democrats in opposing the aid to Israel, a result that once would have been stunning considering the decades of bipartisan support for the nation. Now, it's just another reminder of how much of a mess Congress, and in particular, House Republicans, have become.

CNN —A plague on both these houses:The Senate seems to lack the political will for a bipartisan border deal. The House lacks an effective majority for a partisan impeachment effort as GOP leaders scramble for votes. Except, as the vote approached, they seemed to realize they might not have the votes to impeach Mayorkas after all. The only other time a Cabinet member was impeached, back in 1876, it was with a unanimous House vote. With hours to go before the Mayorkas impeachment vote is set to occur, there is a real possibility it could fail, and it can only pass by the slimmest of margins.

House Republicans have accused Mayorkas of not complying with immigration laws when it comes to the southern border. House Republican leaders scrambled Tuesday to lock down enough support in their caucus to pass a bill to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. A procedural vote to begin debate on the Mayorkas impeachment resolution passed the House Tuesday afternoon, but six members missed the vote: Three Republicans and three Democrats. "I am a lean 'no,'" Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., told CNBC last week as the House Homeland Security Committee debated the articles of impeachment. House Republicans have 219 seats with three vacancies versus Democrats' 212, with one vacancy. ‘A sheer coincidence’The journey to the Supreme Court unknowingly began even before the insurrection itself. (In the Cawthorn case, the group partnered with a retired GOP state Supreme Court justice.) CREW appealed to the Colorado Supreme Court, whose members were all appointed by Democratic governors, though they originate from a pool of candidates recommended by a bipartisan panel. Trump appealed the Colorado ruling to the US Supreme Court in early January and oral arguments are set for Thursday. “It’s embarrassing, and it shows the imbalance on our state Supreme Court,” Buck told CNN.

House Republicans were thrown for a loop on Tuesday when a vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border failed after four Republicans voted against it. House GOP leaders displayed confidence going into the vote despite knowing ahead of time that at least a couple Republican members were going to vote against impeachment. Republicans could try to impeach Mayorkas again once Scalise returns. GOP efforts to impeach Mayorkas were vehemently opposed by the Biden administration and the Homeland Security Department. Republican senators on Tuesday indicated that they would block a procedural vote for the bipartisan border deal this week.

But with just hours to go before the planned vote, it was unclear whether leaders would have enough G.O.P. support to charge Mr. Mayorkas. With Republicans in control of the House by a minuscule margin — and Democrats solidly opposed — they can afford no more than two defections. Two of their members have already said they will vote no, with a few others still publicly undecided. Skeptics have privately warned that if the House impeaches Mr. Mayorkas now, making him the first sitting cabinet member to suffer that fate, future Republican cabinet members could be subjected to the same treatment.

Four Republicans joined all House Democrats in voting down what would have been the first impeachment of a Cabinet official in nearly 150 years. Mayorkas' impeachment was not expected to go anywhere. But senators from both parties have repeatedly made clear that they have a particular ire reserved for Mayorkas' impeachment. Before Tuesday's vote, McClintock issued a scathing 10-page letter to his colleagues denouncing their impeachment push. "[T]aking the course outlined by the [Homeland Security Committee] is bad politics and bad policy," McClintock wrote in his letter.

At least two Republican lawmakers are still undecided on impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. House Republicans are rallying around a push to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. On Wednesday, House Republicans are set to consider the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. As Homeland Security secretary, Mayorkas oversees a vast agency that includes U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Homeland Security Department notes that for all these reasons apprehending a migrant on the watchlist is extremely rare. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement that there is simply "no valid basis" to impeach Mayorkas.

Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) speaks with reporters after a vote on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, in Washington, DC. The Republican chairman of the House Ethics Committee on Friday filed a resolution to expel Rep. George Santos from Congress in the wake of a damning report alleging the scandal-plagued GOP freshman committed campaign fraud and theft. Santos has already declared he will no longer seek reelection in 2024, even as he slammed the ethics report as a "politicized smear." But on the heels of Thursday's ethics report, many of Santos' GOP colleagues who previously voted to keep him in Congress declared that they would now support an effort to throw him out. The 56-page report found that Santos, 35, "sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit."

[1/2] Newly elected Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) addresses the U.S. House of Representatives after he was elected to be the new Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., October 25, 2023. Johnson also warned Democrats that House Republicans would impose a full-year CR for 2024 "with appropriate adjustments to meet our national security priorities" if Congress fails to reach agreement. House Republicans are aiming for a Tuesday vote. Failure to hit that benchmark led to McCarthy's ouster, but some House Republicans suggested Johnson deserved more time. The brutal infighting that has characterized Republicans this year, including the party's own rejection of three seasoned nominees for House speaker, coincides with falling federal revenues and mounting costs for interest, health and pension outlays.

WASHINGTON — House Republicans on Saturday unveiled their stopgap funding bill to avert a government shutdown set to begin next weekend. The House voted on Tuesday to censure Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, formally rebuking the sole Palestinian American in Congress for her statements regarding the Israel-Hamas war. Four Republicans voted against censuring Ms. Tlaib, while one Democrat and three Republicans voted “present,” declining to take a position. After the gavel fell, Democratic lawmakers, mostly progressives, surrounded Ms. Tlaib on the floor and embraced her. Ms. Tlaib has been by far the most vocal member of Congress to do so. When the Colorado Republican announced this past week that he would not seek reelection, he began with the type of criticism of Democratic policies that is standard fare for a hard-line conservative. Yet under political pressure in Colorado, Buck decided there was no way forward for him in Congress.
