Trump was whisked away to safety, unharmed, while the gunman, who officials believe remained near the tree-line perimeter of the golf course for 12 hours, fled the scene by car. Phone records from T-Mobile that indicated Routh’s phone was “in the vicinity of the golf course” for roughly 12 hours before he was first spotted by US Secret Service, according to charging documents. It’s still not clear why Routh went to the golf course that day. But Secret Service knew immediately it was bullets, and they grabbed me, and I think probably the other one, Steve is one of the people. One patrol deputy saw the suspect vehicle at about mile marker 110 and alerted others, following it but not trying to immediately stop the vehicle, Snyder said.

“The Secret Service needs more help,” Biden told reporters while leaving the White House on Monday. Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesActing US Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe met with Trump and local law enforcement on Monday in Florida. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in the fallout from the assassination attempt, leading to Rowe’s appointment as acting director. Those concerns were underscored by details revealed Monday about the suspected shooter’s whereabouts before he was ultimately spotted by Secret Service agents. Moskowitz said Sunday that the Secret Service needed to consider taking more drastic measures, such as shutting down a significantly wider perimeter.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign said it raked in a whopping $310 million in its July fundraising efforts — more than double the amount raised by former President Donald Trump last month. Harris’ fundraising numbers mark the latest sign of how transformative and energizing the change to the top of the Democratic ticket has been among grassroots and high-dollar supporters. A majority of that $310 million haul, more than $200 million, was raised in the first week of Harris’ candidacy, the campaign said in a statement, with two-thirds of the fundraising coming from first-time donors to the campaign. The campaign also said it has $377 million cash on hand, while the Trump campaign has $327 million cash on hand. Read more here.

Biden also had multiple conversations about the deal with his German counterpart Olaf Scholz, including when the chancellor visited the Oval Office in February. Convicted Russian assassin Vadim Krasikov, who was jailed in Germany, was critical to getting Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a deal. Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, will do that for me, but not for anyone else, and WE WILL BE PAYING NOTHING!” Trump said. “Why didn’t he do it when he was president?” Biden said before turning to leave the room. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks to reporters on July 25, in Washington, DC. Kenny Holston/Pool/Getty ImagesThe election authorities of at least 48 states, both Republicans and Democrats, say there are no obstacles that would prevent Vice President Kamala Harris from getting on election ballots if she becomes the official Democratic presidential nominee, as expected. There was not a single state election authority that told CNN Harris would face a ballot issue as the official nominee; election authorities in two states — Florida and Montana — did not respond to requests for comment, but a review of the states’ ballot access rules suggests Harris is not likely to face an issue there either. The 48 states also include the 15 states where former President Donald Trump, the Republicans’ 2024 nominee, had his highest share of the vote in 2020. Johnson’s office did not respond to CNN’s requests to identify the “impediments” he claimed some states have.

CNN —Manhattan prosecutors said there is no basis to overturn Donald Trump’s conviction in the hush money case after the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity. Any error, they argued in a filing Thursday, is “harmless” when viewed against “overwhelming evidence” of the former president’s guilt. Prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney’s office said the conviction should stand. They also noted that Trump’s attorneys didn’t raise objections during the trial to most of the evidence they now question, arguing they can’t now challenge it after the trial. According to Hicks, Trump said it would have been bad for Stormy Daniels’ allegations to have come out before the election.

In May, Haley said she would vote for Trump, sparking backlash from some anti-Trump Republicans who had supported her campaign. Even after she suspended her campaign in March, Haley continued to get a significant share of the vote in subsequent primaries. “I know that Trump kept dictators at bay, and that’s what I hope he will continue to do,” she said. That’s what I want President Trump to have. “First of all, she was official, she should have been there,” Haley said of Harris, who serves as president of the Senate in her official capacity.

CNN —The House voted on Wednesday to create a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. A resolution to establish the task force was approved in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 416 to 0. The House task force will be made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats and will have subpoena authority, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries announced this week. Congress has moved swiftly to investigate the security failures that led to the shooting on July 13. “The award of $464 million in a case with no victims, no proven injuries, and no losses is not remotely defensible,” Trump’s lawyers wrote. According to Trump’s attorneys, Trump personally should have been dismissed as a defendant. The Trump attorneys accused Engoron of enacting a “punitive” penalty against the former president that was unconstitutional. Just like at trial, Trump’s lawyers in particular took issue with a reference in Engoron’s summary judgment opinion that Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort was valued at $18 million. During the trial, Engoron said that he was not trying to assess the value of the property when he referenced the tax assessor value.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

CNN —Donald Trump urged the judge in his New York hush money case to dismiss his conviction in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity last month, according to a new court filing. “In order to vindicate the Presidential immunity doctrine, and protect the interests implicated by its underpinnings, the jury’s verdicts must be vacated and the Indictment dismissed,” Trump’s attorneys wrote to Judge Juan Merchan. “Much of the unconstitutional official-acts evidence concerned actions taken pursuant to ‘core’ Executive power for which ‘absolute’ immunity applies.”The district attorney’s office declined to comment for this story. The district attorney’s office will respond later this month, and Merchan said he will decide the matter in September, with a potential sentencing scheduled on September 18, if necessary. Trump’s sentencing would be postponed until September 18, Merchan wrote – “if such is still necessary.”The district attorney’s reply to Trump is due on July 24.

President Joe Biden’s dismal showing at the CNN presidential debate against former President Donald Trump resonated around the world, with foreign diplomats expressing shock and concern. “Hard to watch” is how multiple foreign diplomats described Thursday night’s debate between Biden and Trump. Trump even suggested he had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin about his “dream” of invading Ukraine. He also attacked Biden over the Afghanistan withdrawal and argued it was the reason Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022. Read more on how the world is reacting to the CNN debate.

“Hard to watch” is how multiple foreign diplomats described Thursday night’s debate between Biden and Trump to CNN. I had difficulties understanding what he was saying, and I understand English pretty well,” said a second European diplomat. Biden’s debate flop was front-page news across Europe, with left- and right-leaning newspapers excoriating the president – even in France, where the country has its own elections coming up this weekend. “There are many options that are discussed, but we don’t see, any that are self-evident,” the first European diplomat said. Moscow’s state TV station, Russia 1, lampooned Biden’s debate performance.

Trump, however, cannot discuss any prosecutor, court staffer or their family members, according to a court order on Tuesday from Judge Juan Merchan that rolls back parts of the gag order imposed before the trial began. That aspect of the gag order remains in effect at least until his sentencing, which is set for July 11. Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement that Merchan’s order “leaves in place portions of the unconstitutional gag order” and that Trump plans to appeal the ruling. Trump repeatedly complained about the gag order throughout the seven-week trial, arguing that witnesses, including Cohen, were taking advantage of the gag order to attack him when he couldn’t respond. In the filing, the Manhattan district attorney’s office said it did not oppose lifting the portion of the gag order that blocked Trump from making statements about witnesses.

The indictment alleged that Trump was a part of an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election. While hush money payments are not illegal in themselves, each charge was tied to a specific allegedly false entry among the financial records of the Trump Organization. Trump has argued that the payments to Michael Cohen, his former fixer who paid Daniels, were correctly labeled as legal expenses. Trump railed against the gag order every day during the trial and again on May 31 when he spoke at Trump Tower the day after the verdict. And the Georgia election interference case is in legal limbo while Trump and several of his co-defendants try to disqualify the Atlanta-area prosecutor who brought the charges.

Donald Trump departed Trump Tower moments ago and is en route to the downtown Manhattan courthouse, where a jury is set to continue a second day of deliberations to determine his legal fate in his historic criminal hush money trial. The 12 jurors— seven men and five women — will determine whether Trump is guilty of 34 felony criminal charges of falsifying business records in connection with allegedly concealing reimbursements to his then-lawyer for a purported hush money scheme to silence an adult film star about an affair shortly before the 2016 presidential election. Jurors will return to court at 9:30 a.m. Trump and the attorneys will remain in the courthouse while the jury deliberates. Trump’s team has a war room of sorts and will be in there at times during jury deliberation.

The judge left the courtroom, and Trump, his lawyers and the prosecutors remained behind to wait for the end of the day. But everything changed when the judge re-entered the courtroom at 4:36 p.m. with a stunning note: The jury had reached a verdict. The jury needed 30 minutes to fill out the forms, leaving Trump and the attorneys sitting in the courtroom until the judge and jury returned. When the judge returned to the bench, he warned the parties and the audience against “reactions” or “outbursts of any kind” before the jury entered. The jurors were polled one-by-one to confirm this was their verdict, and Trump turned and craned his neck to the right to look at the jurors.

CNN —A Manhattan jury found Donald Trump guilty of all 34 charges of falsifying business records Thursday, an unprecedented and historic verdict that makes Trump the first former president in American history to be convicted of a felony. And if he defeats President Joe Biden in November, he will be the first sitting president in history to be a convicted felon. The verdict in the hush money trial was announced after jurors deliberated for nearly 12 hours over two days. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg speaks to the media after a jury found former President Donald Trump guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, on Thursday, May 30, in New York. “There’s only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: At the ballot box,” Biden wrote on X, linking to a fundraising page.

Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump has uttered multiple false or misleading claims about his Manhattan criminal trial this week as the trial has neared a conclusion. An “advice of counsel” defense typically requires the defendant to waive attorney-client privilege. This Court can not endorse such a tactic.” Therefore, Merchan ruled, Trump could not invoke or even suggest a “presence of counsel” defense in the trial. Prosecutors provided three theories of what unlawful means Trump used. After Merchan refused last week to change his mind, Trump’s defense decided not to call Smith as a witness.
