Here's why Americans are obsessed with iced coffee
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Ryan Baker | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
In 2023, Americans spent about $17.7 billion on out-of-home cold coffee including iced coffee, cold brew and frozen coffee drinks. Giants like Starbucks have played a major role in iced drinks taking share from more traditional hot coffee. 45% of coffee drinkers ages 18 to 24 said they had a cold coffee in the past day according to a survey conducted in July 2024 by the National Coffee Association. Cold coffee drinks are highly customizable, with syrups, toppings and cold foam incorporated into many of the popular offerings at major coffeehouse chains. Watch the video to learn more about why cold coffee has taken off in the United States.

CNN —A rare knife handle in the shape of a gladiator has been discovered at Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England, shining a new light on the celebrity status of the ancient Roman combatants. The secutor gladiator depicted on the knife handle wears a helmet, holds a big shield and has his left hand out, which would have been holding a sword. The knife handle was discovered in a river at Corbridge Roman Town on Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, England. The 2,000-year-old knife handle was found in the Tyne River at Corbridge Roman Town on Hadrian’s Wall, a defensive barrier built by the occupying Romans in northeast England. “This beautifully made knife handle is a testament to how pervasive this celebrity culture was, reaching all the way to Hadrian’s Wall at the very edge of the Roman Empire,” she added.

After 25+ cruises, I say the best cadence of busy port days to relaxing sea days is a ratio of 2:1. Ultimately, I think adding one or two sea days to the itinerary would've improved the experience and given me space to relax. AdvertisementPlus, multiple sea days in a row can provide beginner or first-time cruisers insight into whether they like them. This can be useful to anyone contemplating trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific crossings that can have seven or more sea days in a row. For me, after going on more than 25 cruises — including a 105-day sailing — I've found the best cadence of busy port days to relaxing sea days is a ratio of 2:1.

Elon Musk embraces Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Oct. 5, 2024. Kissinger was deeply respected in China and continued to meet with its leaders as an unofficial diplomat in efforts to promote warmer relations between the two countries. Just months before Kissinger died in November 2023, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in July 2023. They may not reach the same impact as Kissinger, given the more complex period, he said, though they could help stabilize relations. Magnetospheres are the protective bubbles around planets like Earth that have magnetic cores and magnetic fields, and they are driven by the planet’s magnetic field. Voyager 2’s data showed that Uranus’ magnetosphere was home to unexpectedly powerful electron radiation belts. Voyager 2’s observations of Uranus’ magnetosphere defied the way astronomers understand how magnetic fields trap energetic particles and their radiation. The first panel (left) of this artist's concept depicts how Uranus' protective magnetosphere behaved prior to Voyager 2's flyby. Fortunately, sending a dedicated mission to study Uranus in the future has become a priority for NASA, according to a report released in 2022.

The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 25 basis points on Thursday. AdvertisementAnother interest-rate cut is headed Americans' way. On Thursday, the Federal Open Market Committee announced a 25-basis-point interest-rate cut after a 50-basis-point cut in September. Still, some Democratic lawmakers urged the Fed to implement another 50-basis-point cut to give Americans more financial relief.

The Federal Reserve would likely respond to inflation by raising interest rates to curb demand. In an economic chain reaction, households would then pay higher interest rates on borrowing of all kinds as the Fed moves to tame that newly rekindled inflation. That led to the 30-year fixed mortgage rate rising, meaning homebuyers are on track to see higher interest rates on loans. An analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found that Trump's policies would decrease posttax incomes by an average of $1,800 in 2025. Trump's win is also expected to influence the Federal Reserve's upcoming decisions on interest rates.

LONDON British telecom firms Vodafone and Three's multibillion-pound merger could go ahead if the companies adopt a series of proposed remedies to clear competition concerns, regulators said Tuesday. Vodafone has previously said that the combined entity, once merged, would invest £11 billion ($14.46 billion) into U.K. telecommunications infrastructure. Vodafone has also said it disagrees with earlier findings from the CMA that the merger would lead to price increases for consumers. It says the merger wouldn't pricing strategy and would enhance competition between mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs.
