The Illinois State Board of Elections rejected a complaint on Tuesday that sought to disqualify former President Donald J. Trump from the state’s primary ballot. The appointed eight-member board determined unanimously that it did not have the authority to decide whether Mr. Trump had engaged in insurrection, the basis for the complaint. The board had appointed a former Republican judge, Clark Erickson, to hear arguments in the case. In an opinion made public over the weekend, Mr. Erickson said that he believed Mr. Trump had engaged in insurrection by attempting to remain in office after losing the 2020 election. But Mr. Erickson said he did not believe that the board had the authority to disqualify Mr. Trump on those grounds, and that the question should instead be left to the courts.

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear arguments next month in an historic Colorado Supreme Court ruling to remove Trump from that state’s ballot. But he said the election board can't engage in the “significant and sophisticated constitutional analysis” required to remove Trump’s name before the March 19 primary. Still, Erickson noted that even if the board disagrees with his reasoning, Trump's name should be removed from the Illinois primary ballot. The election board is split evenly between four Democrats and four Republicans. Free Speech for People, which is leading the Illinois ballot effort, praised the recommendation from the Republican retired judge as “significant” but argued that Illinois law allows the board to make the ballot decision.

Retired Illinois judge Clark Erickson presided over the roughly two-hour hearing in Chicago on Friday. The Illinois State Board of Elections, which is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to accept Erickson’s recommendation in the Trump case, is a bipartisan panel with four Democrats and four Republicans. Their decision can be appealed in Illinois state courts. At its Tuesday meeting, the election board is also slated to vote on a 14th Amendment challenge lodged against President Joe Biden by a group of conservative activists.

The counting of votes has concluded, with Lai – the candidate of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) – receiving just over 40% of the total votes, according to Taiwan’s Central Election Commission (CEC). The Democratic-backed state measure bans the sale and distribution of many kinds of high-powered semiautomatic "assault weapons," including AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, and large-capacity magazines. CNN —A Chicago-area landlord was arrested and charged with murder and hate crimes after authorities said he stabbed and killed a 6-year-old boy and seriously wounded his mother, allegedly because the tenants are Muslim. Sept 30 (Reuters) - A semi-truck carrying thousands of gallons of a toxic substance crashed in southern Illinois, and the multi-vehicle accident killed five people and left five seriously injured, officials said on Saturday. Early estimates indicated that 4,000 gallons were spilled, leading to about 500 people being evacuated from the area, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency said. The accident led to an evacuation within a mile's radius of the crash due to the plume from ammonia leak, state police said. Illinois State Police said it was notified about the crash "involving multiple vehicles, including a semi-truck that is leaking anhydrous ammonia." CNN —A cosmic object in the shape of a glowing question mark has photobombed one of the latest images captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope — and scientists think they know what it might be. The two have been observed and studied by space and ground-based telescopes since the 1950s, but the highly sensitive Webb telescope allowed for the highest-resolution and most detailed image yet. NASA/ESA/CSA/Joseph DePasquale (STScI)The Webb telescope illuminates information about the origins of our universe, but the appearance of this mysterious object in the background of this image leaves more questions than answers. The cosmic question mark hasn’t been closely observed or studied, so scientists aren’t exactly sure about the object’s origins and makeup. The question mark shape could also be “indicative of a merger where these two galaxies are interacting gravitationally,” Britt said.

A judge overseeing lawsuits against Boeing ruled that pre-crash fear and pain can be used in trial. A trial over an Ethiopian Airlines crash will determine what Boeing owes families of the victims. Boeing lawyers previously argued they didn't have to pay for physical damages before the crash. The company previously told Insider it has settled about 75% of the lawsuits brought against it over the Ethiopian Airlines crash and a second 2018 Boeing 737 MAX crash.
