There is no “Scream V,” but now we have “Scream VI.” In case you’ve lost track (or lost interest), the latest self-aware slasher flick is the sequel to a “re-quel,” last year’s modestly successful “Scream.” That entry helpfully included characters who, referring to the franchise-within-the-franchise “Stab” and its successors, in effect told the audience that it was a combination of reboot and sequel (cf. What was once cleverly self-referential now comes across as nostalgia for ’90s comfort food, like the fried ice cream at Chi-Chi’s. The 1996 franchise-starter, written by “Dawson’s Creek” creator Kevin Williamson , fondly mocked the slasher-movie clichés beloved by Gen X audiences who had grown up watching “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th” on cable TV. Two generations later, however, Mr. Williamson’s meta-cinematic framing is everywhere and the tang of originality is long gone. “Scream VI” feels like a photocopy of a photocopy.

On a purely technical, tape-reading basis, the S & P 500 this trip has in fact now closed above its 200-day average, whereas it merely touched that threshold in August. The equal-weighted version of the S & P 500 is down only 8.5% this year and a mere 2% off its August peak, compared to 14.5% and 5% for the standard market-cap-weighted S & P, more evidence that the "typical stock" is holding up better than the biggest ones. This time, stocks began falling two months before the first Fed rate hike. Then there are superhero movies about how cool it might look to shoot lightning out your fingertips. Like “Aquaman” and “Shazam!,” “Black Adam” feels like its script was dreamed up during seventh-grade recess. Adrianna is being pursued by the thugs ruling Kahndaq, so Teth Adam helpfully smites her enemies via such digitally colorful actions as roasting attackers with fingertip-fired electricity and smashing helicopters together while flying. Teth Adam, or Black Adam, as he will come to be known in a nod to both his dyspeptic personality and his skin-tight superhero garb, has much the same powers as Superman, but tied to attitude instead of innocence.
