You may not know this, but the United States is in the grips of another crisis — perhaps its greatest crisis of all. In addition to confronting a recession, a collapsing stock market, unemployment rates at a 50-year high and skyrocketing crime, the Constitution itself is now essentially dead. The economy is growing, the stock market is at historic highs and the unemployment rate is near a 50-year low. But crime rates have dropped after pandemic-era increases, and overall crime rates are substantially lower than they were in the relatively recent past: Violent crimes and property crimes are occurring at less than half the rates they were in the early 1990s. An overwhelming majority of Americans (77 percent) believe that crime is rising — one of the most pessimistic assessments in a generation.

People cited busy schedules, heavy workloads and a persistent "pressure to always be available" as the biggest impediments to taking more time off. More than half of Americans think the United States is in an economic recession, although gross domestic product has been increasing for the past several years. According to a new Guardian/Harris poll, 56% of respondents said they believe the U.S. is in a recession and 58% say that President Joe Biden is responsible for what they see as an economic downturn. A recession is an extended period of economic decline, usually designated when GDP has declined for two or more consecutive fiscal quarters. U.S. GDP growth has been outpacing that of other developed nations. The Guardian/Harris poll is yet another example of an ongoing gap between economic data and economic feelings that has nagged the Biden administration in recent months.

"A strong work ethic" is the top skill companies are looking for in new hires, but is one of the hardest to find, according to new research from ADP. As part of its research, ADP surveyed more than 1,500 business owners, senior leaders and hiring managers about their hiring plans and priorities in 2024. Even as conversations about the importance of technical upskilling reach a fever pitch, soft skills emerged as the clear winner. "A strong work ethic" is a nebulous term. As artificial intelligence integrates more into the workforce, soft skills, or people skills, are invaluable assets to professionals, the report notes.

Stagwell Group, the advertising agency holding group operated by Mark Penn, a former advisor to Bill and Hillary Clinton, is actively looking to buy adtech companies as it continues to grow through acquisitions. Penn's theory is that by bringing such adtech in-house, Stagwell can offer more self-service software to advertisers who want it while also shrinking those clients' ad prices and expanding its own margins. According to the survey, Americans set their sights on $1.46 million as the magic number to make them feel comfortable in retirement. And it differs by generation — both Gen Z and millennials said they would feel comfortable retiring with over $1.6 million, Gen X thinks $1.56 million, and boomers think $990,000. For example, the majority of Gen Z, millennials, and Gen X survey respondents expect the US will enter a recession this year — with one-third of adults saying they don't feel financially secure. Gen X is also facing their own tough economic plight as the "forgotten generation." Millennials and Gen Zers both started saving earlier for retirement than their Gen X peers and are more confident that they'll be financially prepared for retirement.
